  • Hey every one thank you for checking out my video. Me and my buddy Billy decided to make a trip to tamales bay for halibut we had only made 2 trips to the bay this year and his big boat was in the shop so we ran out to nicks cove launched my boat on low tide. The plan was to find some live bait and headed to to bar and fish bait and jigs. We went over by hog island and found some jack smelt on the weed line and bill said let go try by the buoy were we use to fish for bait and I said ok so we were on our way and started seeing bait jumping on the surface so we drifted through and I tried dropping a jig rod and it only took a few minutes and I was hooked up but I lost it so we reset and put live bait out and I hooked up we where doing short drifts and we picked up a fish every drift than we got 2 fish on a drift we put the 5 fish in the boat and than we found some sharks. the first was a angel shark that we where hoping was a big halibut but it wasn't and before we could get it unhooked we had another rod going of and I grab it and go around the bow and it circle and I see that it was a thresher it circle both sabiki rods so bill cut the rigs off and than the shark takes off and does a little jump and comes back to the boat and bill nets it we instantly bleed the shark and gut it and took some pics and video of it and the halibut that didn't make it in the box. we reset again and only needed one more halibut and it didn't take long and we had it on the jig and it was only 12:30 so we headed out the mouth and across the bar for some rock fish. there where lots of people fishing the bar and I was glad we had found the little spot of fish and managed to get our limits didn't take long and we where in the rock fish and it only took 2 hours and we had limits of rock fish and one under size lingcod. We managed to get our limit of vermilion rock fish and coppers witch was nice. What worked best for us was the 3 inch squid rigs in pink and white glow with 6- 8 oz weight I was using that on my 30 lb mhx jig rod with my accurate 300 with 40 lb braid. For halibut I was using light ugly stick rod with 17 lb trap rig with a 2 oz weight on a slider for live bait and a cal star rod with a accurate tern 300 with 40lb braid and a 20 lb leader for jigging the jigs I was using I make and I was tot how to by chris brown of big foot bait company. thank you for watching please like ,share , and subscribe tight lines till next time.

Great day out there. Are halibut considered "fin fish?" The reason I ask is because the regs allow for a "boat limit" for finfish. Meaning a boat with two anglers can catch two limits and it doesn't matter who catches the fish, but I don't think that applies to halibut does it? I thought once an angler caught their halibut limit they couldn't catch another one.

Thank you for pointing that out its called boat limits in the ocean and bay in ca regs 27.60 c it talks about boat limits and all the party boats do it and every boat I have ever been on has fished for boat limits and there’s always some one with the hot rod and yes they are fin fish thank you hope this helps
