This is honestly the *only* instance of that trope that doesn't strike me as lazy writing and fill me with rage. Rather than the tired-and-overdone "I can't tell them [xyz] because [stupid and emotionally immature]," the miscommunication between them was so perfectly in character and so beautifully authentic and AAH MY HEART
overjoyed by how rue, to quote brennan, just rocks hobs world CONSTANTLY. also obsessed with how hob has to try so hard not to let his feelings show even when he’s confronting rue about Apollo and Grabalba and still reveals so much vulnerability when mentions rue taking advantage of his foolishness with “distracting things” like bestie it’s not a ruse or a con ur in love!
Also... Like... Major... Honey... You're literally admitting them existing and talking to you is *seductive* without coming out and saying the word. Like it's the shyest, most embarrassed, self deprecating admission without an admission ever. Like... Until the kiss, we got *one* hand grab that was rebuffed. And dancing. (Some of which was the electric slide apparently...) And that's enough to give the boy the vapors... He's got it *so bad*.
The Prince of Air and Darkness knows what's up! Also, like... He knows Hob... Getting Hob to talk to them first... Not likely. So telling them yes, he likes you, please make a move cause he won't is a mood!
RueHob really is the best queer romance i've ever gotten to experience, truly. It made me cry, i was in AGONY. They did so good, and i am IMPRESSED with Oscar is a first time D&D player!! They did so good!!
i feel like brennan listening expressionlessly to Rue is a choice he made purposefully. Hob is probably trying to stay super impassive because one side of him is like HOLY SHIT THEY LOVE ME WHAT THE FUCK and the other side is still enraged at the betrayal he feels Rue did to his court and by extension, to him, and that side is also questioning whether this current love confession is just another part of the “ruse” to “distract” him further. He’s caught between these two clashing ideas of Rue’s intentions, and i felt his expressionless face is one of someone who is really trying to listen and trying to look like they are digesting the information being said to them, but a million thoughts and emotions are racing through his mind at once, and he’s devoting all his energy to not exploding with emotion on the spot or giving away how much this is affecting him. (which is all a neurodivergent mooooood) anyway imo brennan is never doing nothing when in character, even when not speaking, because that’s just who he is - and it’s what good actors do. i love the choice to not continue to fight Rue but instead be stunned into anxious silence by it, ruminating and reacting (and trying not to react) and attempting to comprehend everything all at once as his whole world is suddenly recontextualized.
To yes and off of this - notice how Hob clocked during this conversation that Wuvvy's there, right? Wuvvy... Who challenged him to a duel over making Rue cry *and he still doesn't know how he allegedly did that or why Rue was crying*... And Rue's mentioning correspondence he never got. Who else has access to the Master of Ceremonies' correspondence? And who else might have motive to keep him from that correspondence? Hob might be down on himself, but he's not dumb- he may not quite believe it, but there's additional evidence they might be telling the truth, which is even more confusing because, again, he's down on himself - how could they possibly be more than polite and friendly to him, he's just a goblin. If they didn't care and were just using him for political reasons, it would hurt but to him it would make sense, cause he's been made to feel not good about himself. If they actually care but something stopped them from being able to tell him... Well what does that mean? But also... How much can he trust them considering what they pulled with his court? With all that, is it any wonder Hob.exe has stopped working and needs some time to restart?!
The way Hob thinks so little of himself, constantly degrading himself when speaking to Rue about how they broke off the engagement. Also the surgery hardcut was SO FUNNY. I LOVE your edits and what you do with even the youtube captions!!!
They found that great chemistry during the hunt, decided it could be a great thing to resolve at the end... AND THEN Aabria, Oscar and Brennan just poked and teased at the thing to torture us for as much episodes as possible.
"I love you. I love you intensely and fiercely. I love you in a way that I've never loved anything before in my life." Worth it. Beautiful. Let's gooooooo!
SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP!!! They had me so invested in this just to TEAR IT DOWN!! AABRIA IS SUCH A GOOD DM OWWWW MY SOUL!! It is CRAZY how well this was played and I love EVERYONE at this table. Oscar and Brennan had me holding my breath for so many of these good good emotional moments THEIR ACTING!!!!
I just have one other thing to point out- titles! Hob is *so* careful about titles, politeness, the possibility of overstepping, being overly familiar. He corrects himself multiple times over the course of the campaign to make sure he isn't mistaken for being overly familiar. This is a Regency game. Calling someone by their first name with no title in front of it, particularly someone of another gender, and particularly someone of a higher social standing than you is the height of familiarity in this period and periods inspired by it. Great example not with Rue but with Binx, she and Hob are alone; he still calls her Miss Choppley, cause propriety dictates that's what's appropriate- they don't know each other well, she's a lady, and more importantly, she's the de facto head of her court, whether she likes it or not, so Hob defers to her outranking him. She couldn't care less so tells him to call her Binx- hes a little surprised but he does it - he has the lady's permission to be more familiar, so ok. We see Hob be so, so careful to call Rue Mistrex de la Rue, Master of Ceremonies, some combination of the above all campaign out of deference, first to their actual rank, then out of affection and genuine respect... For *Hob* of all people to call them by their given name without their leave and in *public* at that?! It's small, it's subtle, but there is no better indicator that this guy is livid to the point of forgetting himself. He doesn't care about propriety anymore, he's just angry and more importantly hurt. And that's devastating! Like... I half expected a duel on the Viscountess's or his own behalf...

I've lost the amount of times I've watched this section, still looking for the other track but I will find it. Epidemic Sound only has so many tracks and if I have to listen to them all I will! I'm still amazed that ep9&10 were only shot in 4hrs and they STILL had improv that was so next level without being exhausted from the pacing of everything else. Absolute standouts.
This right here is why I love but have trouble with romance books… the third act breakup/miscommunication/ last point of major conflict…. When it’s done poorly it can make you want to throw the book across the room. When it’s done well- as this is- it’s beautiful but *devastating*! These two understood the assignment. Just one question I have, someone might remember better than I- we’ve heard Hob use Rue’s first name before… was the moment before approaching them knowing what happened *the first time he called them by their name to their face*? Cause if so… my heart! 💔
Yah, this was a sidequest campaign. So only 10 eps total for it. And eps9&10 were throttled into 1 4hr block of filming bc they had to reschedule shooting due to an illness.
