Get your metro card ready because the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards are returning to Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Voting is now live!!!! We can hardly wait until August 20th for all the explosive performances, unexpected celebrity appearances, and surprises in store. Did we mention that global superstar Jennifer Lopez is our Video Vanguard Honoree? The Bronx native will be accepting her award and performing some of her greatest hits live on stage! Until then, let’s kick back and revisit last year’s show. Kendrick Lamar's fiery medley of "DNA." and "HUMBLE." where he LITERALLY set the stage ablaze, had everyone singing along as he opened the show. Then Katy Perry arrived to host in a space suit floating in the air. The ladies of Fifth Harmony showered the stage with an epic performance of "Down" and "Angel" featuring Gucci Mane, and Normani Kordei's jaw dropping split. Miley Cyrus, a hosting alum, performed "Younger Now", taking on a whole new look and sound which made for the perfect VMA comeback. Later that night, Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid sang their emotional suicide prevention anthem on stage and brought awareness to issues of mental health as well as the fight for equality. There were also show-stopping performances from Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato, DNCE, Rod Stewart, Thirty Seconds To Mars, Shawn Mendes, Gucci Mane, Julia Michaels, Alessia Cara and KYLE. Video Vanguard P!nk completely transformed the VMA stage with a medley of her biggest hits, then accepted her award with a powerful speech about individuality and self-acceptance inspired by her daughter Willow, reminding those watching to be their true selves. Stay tuned for more announcements about this year’s show!

She didn't say "the world is bullshit" she said *this* world is bullshit. I've seen this misquoted so many times. Because "the world is bullshit" makes it sound like she's just complaining about everything and not something specific. She's was trying to say in her own awkward, 19 year old way that all *this* celebrity worship was bullshit. And it still is.
No, she's not, you just added the interpretation. She said this world is bullshit. Don't take the punch out of the statement.
No different than when Brando or George C Scott refused the Oscar. Although the reasons might be different (not in Scott's case) I think Fiona only accepted the award out of politeness. The awards industry doesn't care about the artists, it's there to sell it's own product and make money and they make that money from the image of the artists so I fully see what Fiona was saying and respect her for it.
i got that as well , but i see how people can misquote and misunderstand. ungladly
Stop with the semantics 🙄...was she even 19 here? Honestly 'this' or 'the' doesn't make a difference, the world is still bs and honestly she's probably angry nobody was worshipping her at the time, but with all that crap she was saying she still took the award home with her anyway lol so big deal 🙄
@@AO-wg9ne the way you completely missed the point and is here making stuff up... Just say you hate her and go
I remember this. Homegirl made a bold move at the top of her success. She didn't wait until her career started to fizzle out. That's when you know it's real. _One minute, you're hot - tell the truth and you're not._ - Prince
I couldn't agree more.
✊✊✊factzzz
Yep.sad that many did not take her speech seriously as u can see by the clout chasing and attention whoring of today
Absolutely
I think we were in middle school when we saw Fiona make that statement. Our jaws dropped, but I felt like she was talking to us kids and it was pretty cool. Looking back, she is ABSOLUTELY right and I think more kids these days need to hear this (especially with TH-cam & Instagram influencers portraying grand lifestyles).
her indifference to fame is what is keeping me alive at this point
Damn yo hehe you good,?
Same... HERE!!
this was when she was suuuper popular too
I don't get why people get so defensive about it. All she said was that it isn't worth modeling your life about pop tendencies, because it is ephemeral. People should be more genuine, like her!
Robert Matheus, YES, EXACTLY!!!! I've ALWAYS admired her 4 this, and EVERYTHING since!!!! ;-)
I saw this when I was a kid and was incredibly inspired by her...
@@adavidbujanda Yeah, I remember watching this when it happened. I was 14...where the hell have these past 21 years gone??
She didn't follow the norm, which is why people get defensive, thus proving her point.
@@adavidbujanda I too was a kid when I first saw this, I was like in 6th grade and I remember not knowing what she was talking about at the time... but for some reason the words "this world is bullshit" stayed with me I dont know why. perhaps I was curious to find out why she said that...slowly I started to see what she meant as I went into middle school and then high school
Fiona Apple is a real one. And Fetch the Bolt Cutters is heckin iconic.
So fetch
She was right now look at the mainstream music industry today - WAP WAP everywhere 🤮
@Perch Vernell I'm sorry - I'm trying not to cuss too much these days.
Like about 75% 💯 cause like if she was a real one she would have left that silly award sitting there right on the podium, but it's probably sitting somewhere on a mantle or maybe in a dusty box... who knows 😝
@@dougxvale ugh I know
After all these years, I still don't get what was so controversial about her speech. She was right, and she's always been so honest and raw (just pay attention to her lyrics - and BTW, she is one of the best lyricists out there, and criminally underrated). She really practices what she preaches and she's not afraid to say the truth...
>criminally
Hehe
Think about it. She's saying "go with yourself" during a time where manufactured pop stars were at an all time popularity high. Think of Britney, TLC, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC. Everyone loved their personalities, their looks, their undeniably catchy music. This is what was making the bank in the music industry at the time. Fiona condemning this type of celebrity worship went against everything the music industry stood for, so they blacklisted her.
For sure wow
@@franks8462 right that's fkd up
@@franks8462 fiona wasn't really blacklisted at all she has always been in high regard in the music business among critics she chose herself not to play the popularity game because it wasn't healthy for her being in the spotlight like that and not what she was about, it's not that she isn't called in to go on TV and stuff it's just she doesn't want to
She's the kind of person i would like to enjoy a evening talking about life.
Gabriel You and me both. People like her are absolute gems to come by.
Right omgoodness 🤯
@@ieattrees8551 for sure wow 👾🦄
@@ieattrees8551 i eat trees too
believe me when i tell you that you wouldn't walk away feeling any better about life. you might walk away feeling that someone out there is as miserable as you but you won't be any better for it. she would have absolutely NOTHING to say good about life or the world. and you know what? that's just *not* reality. life has good and bad. we all have good experiences and bad experiences. and the good experiences should NEVER come from being in an altered state (READ drugs!). we're here to learn and to evolve. what have you learned and have you evolved? do you do good in the world? do you put good out there? can you say the world is a better place with you in it?
"Don't model your life after us...…...go with yourself". Don't try to be someone you're not, just because you think that others think it's cool. Coming from someone who is a part of the Hollywood culture, those words are HUGE, and they are what many, many youth and young adults need to hear. This girl was incredibly brave to make this speech. And when you hear her say "it's stupid that I'm in this world", you know her self esteem has already been badly damaged by the Hollywood money-making machine.
Totally agree, except I think her saying that "it's stupid that I'm in this world" is more about her being humble and not having a huge ego. To me, it's more like she was saying, she isn't a classically trained singer with tons of connections etc and yet she still made it... and succeeded.
I think when she said "this" world she meant the entertainment. Her speech is flawless.
#beautifully put
her self esteem has been demaged years before she was famous
...among other things😐
“Man... it’s good bye” I love her 😭
Ha
I liked that part too; very original.😁
20 years before her time.
I think nothing about what she said is specific to this time or that time. But this moment was the time she had a chance to help all those kids in the audience, and she stepped up.
@MTV she didn't say "the world is bullshit," she said "this world is bullshit." and by that she meant YOU.
Lol yeah and the whole celebrity infuence "bullshit"
She was talking about Hollywood
@@smorgan125Hollywood isn’t the music industry…

it's wild that y'all post this to self promote, when back in the day you and the rest of music media threw her under the bus for it. just goes to show what a mediocre profit machine MTV's always been versus the extraordinary machine that is Fiona Apple.
To be fair, the people responsible for posting this in the present day were probably kids back in 1997. They could just be stans like the rest of us.
I saw what you did there...

Strong comment.
She's got a point, she's an icon, she's a legend and she is the moment
She really is such a gem...so authentic and beyond her years. This was 22 years ago and resonates more than ever now. I will always respect her and thank her for sharing these words.
I know 👾🦄
She's not only an incredible, once in a lifetime talent, a true artist who never comprised on her integrity, but also a deeply genuine person. That genuinity is reflected in her music as well. Her lyrics are so raw, like a punch to the gut.
there's another side you know. get out there and truly live life and see the other side of life. because you ain't getting it.
ahead of her time, an icon literally she's an icon
Right wow
if you listen close - being an icon is exactly what she doesn't want!!!
This speech is great, and misunderstood as cynicism
And people back in 1997: shes a pottymouth, very disrespectful to talk about the music industry like that, stop buying her music, after that speech she destroyed her career
Today in 2020: she was right all along
I know she way ahead of her time
Yeah it’s saying MTV is bullshit which is true! Lol then the kardashians
Damn. These words still ring true today with the social media influencer bs.
Right
After seeing what pop culture has become and even how social media has molded the young generation I really wish pple were more genuine like this
Damn, she's so smart and cool. What an awesome speech, the world wasn't ready for
I know huh wow
I remember seeing this when I was 16 and being so impressed to see someone actually being REAL up there. love it.
I know wow
Fiona Apple is the true role model. I grew up listening to her music in my teenage years, and had all of her albums. She is just herself, and unique and that's what I love about her. I also got to see her live years ago.
If only people had listened and didn't write her off as a pissed off teen.
We never reference this moment for how iconic it was... She's an awesome lady and I remember as a kid hearing this speech and actually being moved. Love her.
she's so freaking real and I love her so much.
LEGEND
Greatest acceptance speech in music history.
Decades ahead of the times. Much love and respect to Fiona
Fiona is the real deal. I remember this speech. I hadn't seen it for years. She's honest, cool, real and a talent for the ages. Lyrically...genius. piano....beautiful. 🔥 still love her to pieces
She had everything to be a top singer. Her music was listening by millions of people, her beauty in that moment was beyond words. But instead she prefered to be herself, and that honesty is something not very common in those and in these times.
Fiona and Neko Case are my heroes. Women who aren’t afraid to call out bullshit, even when it was controversial and not as supported like it is today. They’ve been in this fight for all of us. 🙏🏽
yessss neko case !! fantastic women.
God Fiona your music means more to me then most people. I will never ever forget this night. I was 13 or 14 at the time but truly changed my perception of life and what real artist are. As a 13 year old boy I was completely in love and still am to this day. I thank you Fiona for all u have done for me. I hope I’m not coming off creepy but guess what I don’t care ( also somthing you helped me get over)
They cut out the last part when she said something to the effect of "I'm just sorry that I have to be in this world." That was the singularly most iconoclastic moment I witnessed growing up. Fiona Apple has remained to me, permanently endearing ever since.
She did say that
AvecPoésie did you watch the video? It’s right there
@@michaelr5100 Yes, I was making reference to how I remembered her saying it more than once. The video shows her saying "It's stupid that I'm in this world." Yet, I could have sworn she had said afterward "I'm sorry that I am in this world." I may have absolutely been wrong, of course. Or my memory may be conflating a post-award interview with this speech, perhaps.
i think about this at least once a week and it gives me strength to keep going
Wow u ok man
@J M right wow
She said THIS world, not THE world MTV, correct your description please. Fiona Apple is an iconic artist deeply underrated but wonderfully talented
I love her. Thank you, Fiona, for everything. You have been with me since the beginning. I saw "Shadowboxer" on Mtv late night or something. I then went out and got Tidal, in 1996. I was 14, or turning 14. This was the most amazing acceptance speech. What you said, here, 25 years ago means so much now, as it did then. "Go with yourself!" "This is my time, and I am gonna use it the way I want to use it." You truly are one of the artists that have stood the test of time for me. You are beautiful, thank you. Much gratitude.
..."This world" .... that´s it, that superficial world of entertainment, and so on. She was better than all of them! and authentically a precious and smart woman ! A woman who didnt want to be machine of making money. Shes want to express herself trough her lovely art, composing and giften us her music when she believes it´s time . Bravo Fiona! Since 1996
I was 9 years old when this happened and I was obsessed with her music. My parents used to listen to Tidal all the time and I would also hear all the singles on the radio. This honestly hit me at such an impressionable age, and I can’t thank her enough for speaking her truth when it wasn’t necessarily what everyone wanted to hear. This was beautiful and I love her for it.
There’s a lot of vapidity, vanity and smoke and mirrors in Hollywood. But one things for sure that Fiona Apple was and still is a diamond in a sea of rocks. And this is proof why. She never sold herself out and never compromised who she was. She may have suffered after making this speech but with the mindset like this and the (albeit small) discography she’s created, she’s still elevated into legendary status. I’ve always had an immense amount of respect for her and so much respect for her having the balls to go on national television and say something so bold at such a young age and in the prime of her career.
Greatest acceptance speech ever! I watched it live. She is a legend.
I can never forget seeing this growing up. She was so spiritual and why I took her words to heart.
Mamma I love you I'm so glad that we're becoming friends 🥺
Her mom was a narcissist I can feel it . Her lyrics reflect deep pain in her life!
She was so ahead of her time
Everybody knows what she mesnt but she got blackballed after that
The term is "blacklisted." But also, Fiona herself isn't exactly prolific when it comes to making music. I doubt she yearned for greater fame than she had attained.
@@AvecPoesie LOL blackballed.
@C Yes, it is. However, Blackball and Blacklist have differing definitions. To shun someone on social or ideological grounds is to Blacklist.
@C Not sure why this is funny. The "reason" is always a fundamental aspect and does indeed have something to do with it. I suspect the OP assumed the terms were interchangeable. There is certainly a macro vs. micro element where the terms differ.
@C I'll be sure to dumb my words down next time. God forbid I expose anyone to a real vocabulary.
And In that moment.... Fiona Apple Has Become a Living Legend!
I remember this !!! She was speaking facts !!
was reading her interview and redirected to this and fiona is so amazing. She said all this when it wasnt COOL.
If she said this now she would be universally applauded. I’m glad we are more aware now.
she’s so beautiful and intelligent
ICONIC. best speech ever.
For sure
We are all defined by moments in life, big moments like this seems small when they are done but they can be very impactful to the world and when they are remembered that's when you know this was a very special moment in history. That's why it's a lesson that you should always do everything in your power to leave every situation and moment better then when you found it.
I think most people in her position would’ve fallen into the hysteria that comes with fame but she seems indifferent. She’s only 20 or 21 in this video.
Joey Hyland I think she was only 19
same energy as daria's graduation speech
If only she had hit fame nowadays, she probably wouldn't have suffered as much
Edit: btw I found out about her today and I'm amazed by her. That speech is just so genuine and it still applied today
I know wow
Iconic.
For sure
Wow I just discovered a REAL Queen 👑
This is my favourite speech. I live for this moment, 23 years ago, still as relevant as ever. Fiona is and will always be my shepherd! ♡ "IS GOOD. BYE."
Resonates more so today than in '97.
We haven't changed a bit.
This is like the best fkn speech ever wow omgoodness 🤯 for realz how did she already realize all this wowzers 👽✨
Fiona is my hero Since I was a teenager.i love you fiona
she was SO ahead of her time. i wish more people listened to this!!!
Back then I was critical of this speech. With the way things are going now about 20 yrs later I now think very much the same. We hoped things would be better but turned out to be worse maybe a lot worse.
What a precious woman
Later in interviews she pointed that she had ment show business world, not the planet.
Im waiting for a new album!!
MeowRoof lol tomorrow
It's good 😎
I love Fiona Apple!
Her point is that celebrities should not be worshipped
GO WITH YOURSELF. Legend. Icon
i was only 12 years old at the time. i didn’t quite understand it then, but i remember how hard “they” tried to clown her after that. Dismissing, calling her crazy and whatnot.
She must’ve upset a lot of demons that night.
This acceptance speech is ahead of your time. Fiona always ahead of your time and she don't lie when says the world is a bullshit. We are living in a world wich people hit the others, kill others and totally disrespectful. I love you, Fiona!
fiona apple, still relevant, back when mtv was relevant.
I'm glad she made this speech.
She is so real!
so real, love her
Yup great girl 👍
I mean, she's right! Fiona Apple doesn't get as much credit as she deserves. She is a genius.
I wish we had some version of her in the mainstream media today.
I was 15 when she said this and I so needed to hear it, still in my head to this day. Just had to add that that is still one of the best albums by a solo artist ever you can’t think 90’s and not think Fiona at least once. People that don’t even know her know that song “I’ve been a bad bad girl, I’ve been careless with a delicate man, and it’s a sad sad world, where a girl will break a boy just because she can.”
she ate this no cap
she understands what we are still too proud to mention..
the best to ever do it, goddamn
She is 100% correct.
That's my girl!!!
I remember after this, MTV tore her to shreds with the ‘go with yourself’ quote on a “Celebrity Deathmatch” episode. 💀
She knew she would lose being A list in music because of this after playing their game for about a year. She was willing to pay the price because the message was more important than building a "brand".She has made music her way, not a corporations way since. Nobody in pop culture has had the courage to give this message again. Except maybe for Amy Lees lyrics in the 2003 Evanescence song and video "Everybody's Fool"
Still relevant 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Crazy how this was seen as controversial at the time. Now it's conventional wisdom: celebrity is artifice, and authenticity rules. Also I remember people saying she was drunk? Sounds perfectly sober to me.
