  • From beautiful soundscapes to glitchy mayhem the Hologram Microcosm never fails. Here I demo how to get the most out of it. A run-through of most of the algorithms and how each effect type changes the texture.
    Its a simple pedal to use, but can be hard to get your head round it at first. This demo of the Microcosm should help you to understand what it's doing and how it affects the input signal.
    Top tip - use counting to hear what its doing - check out the clips at 19:30

    It's a real credit to this machine that, despite your best intentions, you got carried away and demo'd nearly all of the algorithms! Understandable though, it really does sound good.

      Thanks. It happened by accident tbh. I was using the counting in a track and realised it revealed what was going on. I’ve had the unit for a year or so and not done a demo as couldn’t think what else to add to the demos already out there. I’m glad this helped 😀

    I'm really grateful to you for demystifying the Microcosm for me. I own one and have it in-line in my setup, but I haven't had enough luck of my own in making it a coherent enough experience to use it reliably.
    Even just seeing it so large on my screen (65" TV) has allowed me to notice things, like the secondary functions of each knob, and your going over everything patiently and in-depth... Man, what a difference in understanding it all makes.
    Thank you VERY much for this presentation.

    Thank you for the video! Currently borrowing a Microcosm from a generous friend and having trouble fitting it into my edm/house music. It's great for ambient clouds of sound and background texture, but I'd like to try it midi sync'd to a sampler with some breaks and a bassline going. Or maybe sample it and slice it up in the Octatrack? The future is unwritten.

I'm getting some amazing results with the Hologram, you have a clarity to the sound your getting, it's crystal clear, do you have any suggestions of the best way to go about that . What are you using mixer wise , and any suggestions on the global settings to get the best results. I've got the the line level obviously, but are you configuring any other setting.
    Many thanks.

    Awesome vid Starsky. I’m on the hunt for a pedal, what’s ur all time favourite??? Or too hard to say? The synths I want to run into it are an iridium, Virus TI2 and JP8000. Any advice from u would be much appreciated 😊

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For a single pedal the H9 has it all and sounds great - but you need to hook it up to an iPad or laptop to get the most out of it. If you can do that in your setup it’s fantastic. For me it’s a PITA so it doesn’t get used as much (because I move from room to room). The empress reverb is stunning, and I really like the specular tempus which has delay and reverb. Big Sky so has the editor/librarian software. From all of those the simplest to use is the Empress. And it sounds great.

    Good demonstration at all. I think its a FX-Device which has its strenght in the Ambient and Chill area. I can not imagine how to use it in Techno or Deep House. A complex Drumloop and Bass sequence mangled by the Microcosm .....than its Ambient. Am I wrong?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I wouldn’t use it in anything complex. It did some nice things to the simple beat in the demo, but even then I’d sample it to keep the best bits for repeatability. It works best in more sparse material.

    Algorithms are cool but the converters and the sound quality are both terrible, especially for the price, I highly not recommend this pedal to anyone caring about hi resolutio audio.
    PS: it digitally clips really bad when the source is "too hot" which happens quite often when you are source gain spikes...

    • @MrSNEAKFREAK96
      @MrSNEAKFREAK96 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. It didn’t seem too bad in this video for this type of device. Could you be more specific about the low audio quality?

    • @mubakka2642
      @mubakka2642 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrSNEAKFREAK96 Its a hard one to explain but ill try. I think my opinion comes from a comparison to the other outboard effects I own. I have a purpose built effects rig that contains all the moogerfoogers for modulation type effects, chase bliss cmx 1978 for reverb, gifi systems specular tempus for digital delays, empress reverb and delay, ibanez BBD chip rack unit for chorus, delay, doubling, a space station then also some tape delay units. All of the effects I currently run in my live and production rig are of the highest quality and if I didnt own these then the microcosm would most likely sound great. But when comparing the microcosm to these type of units there is a lack of fidelity and clarity in its effected outputs. Reverbs are noticeably artificial in theor tails especially when long, delays have no clarity or character and sound very very cheap. It does some really fun things but if you are going for a high quality sound then its not the best option. Everything becomes washed which might be the point of it but for synths its not optimal, but for guitar the results are much better.

    • @MrSNEAKFREAK96
      @MrSNEAKFREAK96 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mubakka2642 Ah ok, gotcha. I too own moogerfoogers, as well as 80’s/90’s rack gear from Roland,Korg etc., so we will probably be in the same boat about that. I thought it seemed cool, but I’m pretty ambivalent about ambient focused stuff anyway, so this will be a pass for me. Thanks for your thoughts!

    • @dbefore7165
      @dbefore7165 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Music is just organised noise ( and sometimes disorganised)

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yes they do.. and so do I. But its hard to dig into exactly what's going on with this by simply showing it sounding great on loads of different clips. It's hard to hear what's creating the differences in each algorithm. That's why this isn't labelled as a demo, but a walkthrough and tutorial. There are loads of videos showing it in musical pieces.. another one wouldn't add anything new to the conversation. You start creating tracks by playing with noises then pulling lots of ideas together into a coherent structure. Here I'm hoping to help people with a component, not the whole.
