I really enjoyed how chill and laidback this video was! It also inspires me to get out in my garden and plant onions💀 I've been so unmotivated this year in terms of winter crops. I planned to do brassicas, spinach, carrots, and onions, but so far, I only have garlic in because my own stray cats started using a bed or two for litter boxes, and the rain has been nonstop. I just needed a break to get over how frustrating that was! But I'm in Oakland! I have plenty of time! Going to at least get onions and carrots in this weekend!
Don't feel bad, I'm taking a fall/winter break, too. I've only got my garlic in and seeded some broccoli directly in the raised bed. So now i'm gonna have to split it. Every time I tell myself i'm gonna go work on the garden, I end up going to sit down and have two or three cats decide it's lap time. No rain down here, But I better get my ducks in a row soon for when it happens.
I live in zone 6, so I have a built in break from basically November to May. I love growing things, but I feel like I would lose my mind if I didn’t have a cold winter to stop the hustle and bustle of the growing season. (And to kill the ticks and mosquitoes and prevent us from having giant reptiles like Florida🙃)
I am wondering why you don't plant melons and winter squash out in your orchard area? I am in Arizona and put butternut squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, and sweet potatoes near my fruit trees, that way there is plenty of room for them to roam without taking up regular garden space.
My partner is a mushroom expert and mentioned that osyter mushrooms will also eat nematodes. I didn't know that but it may be a way to help with that issue in the future since you an Jacque are getting into mushrooms recently.
Over the years I plant onion “sets” (bulbs) and they have worked great for me. The first year I did this (my kid was 2, they are now 18) I was in a Trader Joe’s and they had a container of fresh “pearl onions” (red, yellow, white) and my daughter and I just pushed them into a container of soil and they all grew into to wonderful green spring onions. I did not know to space them out for larger onions but I mainly grow them for the tops. Over the years I usually get a bag of them at Lowes but they are often dried out. They never got them in this year and Trader’s did not have them but I found pearl onions at Sprouts market. Now I do space them out and have grown some nice full onions over the years. And if I buy green onions at the store I often cut 1-inch of the root end and just shove those into the soil for another round of green onions!
I live in Northern California and can grow intermediate and short day onions. I did an experiment on growing long day onions last year cos I'm on the cusp latitude....what a mistake! They took FOREVER to start bulbing since our day lengths get to barely 14 hours max in late June....and then they just did not have enough time to grow that large bulb. Lesson learned, grow the right onion type for your latitude! Happy New Year!
Glad to see you laying those onion down and covering the roots. They’ll stand up in about a week and so much easier. Can’t wait to see the finished room.
Not related to this video, but i looked up a video regarding how to trellis tomatoes and it brought me to yours here on Epic Gardening. It was great, but I wanted to see how a certain process worked over time. Did a separate search for that. I clicked on a video that looked like just what I needed, halfway down the page...Jacques in the Garden. The Epic Gardening-verse is strong.
I just got back from my allotment (I’m in Uk, zone 8). My plan this morning was to get some onion sets in the ground (a bit late but life happened). That however did not happen as the ground here is actually frozen currently turns out!
Here in New mexico we get down to 15 or lower at night. What's even crazier is I have seedling from sunflowers and peppers that are still alive and just waiting for the Temps to get back up
Just sowed 4 different varieties of hardneck garlic, Italian mystery variety I planted first is already over a foot tall and thriving. Have a purple mizuna, arugula (both green and purple), baby bok Chou and purple bok Chou, bloomesdale spinach, burgundy broccoli, di cicco broccoli, giant red mustard and a few others I have in mind!
Hey Kevin, happy new year! You may have already done this, but could you trap the cats and have them fixed? It would be so helpful so they don’t keep breeding and creating more homeless cats. You can return them to your homestead after their surgeries to help with the mouse population.
1:15 Congrats on the bananas! Always jealous of citrus and bananas since I'm in 6a. Though we make up for it with apples, cherries, tomatoes, and easy hardneck garlic.
I would love to hear about anything you are trying to get rid of your Root Knot Nematode problem. Has anything worked for you? What kind of Mustard did you plant? For whatever reason my garden recently developed this problem. I was happy to see that you carry some RkN resistant seeds so I bought two packets and will be trying them coming summer.
Wait, is that the same Babka or did you just name another cat Babka? Either way, Kevin can you please think about catching and fixing them? San Diego has several different organizations that can help you do it. ♥♥♥ Shoot, I don't live very far from you, I can come help you do it.
I usually plant my onion starts the first or second week in February depending on weather (Lat. 33.5) and have gotten some HUGE bulbs in the past.. Easily softball sized. The problem I have is that most of the short day onions don't seem to store well. The oine that does (Red Creole,) is *real* fond of bolting in my climate.
Great video Kevin you know your 30th birthday was just last year ❤😊 do the cats know your schedule for turning the compost. I think it’s cute. I’m sorry about your last loss of your chicken so sad
😂😂😂😂50s😂😂😂😂. Just the way you said it and I’m looking at below zero windchills. I would be so confused to garden in your zone. I will soon start onion seeds and we harvest in August.
I'm in Southern CA as well and bought seeds at Armstrong yesterday. I was disappointed because they only had long or intermediate day red onions?!? And also had several Intermediate and long day yellow onions! There were only 2 options for short day. That doesn't make sense to me, why sell them here if we can't grow them? I would like to put in a request for some short day red onions please 😂 Do they exist?
I have random cats in my yard now taking care of the field mice but they are digging in my beds and pooping ..any suggestions to keep the cats but have them leave my beds alone?
I haven’t been able to figure that out. I even had to stop gardening when I was pregnant cause some neighbors’ outdoor cats were obsessed with my garden beds. My doctor said it wasn’t safe. Even though I choose not to have cats because of asthma, I still end up dealing with cats way too often.
Feral cats decided to poo in my bed i was trying 2 grow carrots so i cleaned it, reseeded n stuck every $tree spinning garden stake i had in there til there was only 3 inches tween them. Enough to spin byt not enough room 4 cat 2 squat. I usually do this every spring but didnt think theyd like my garlic border. This keeps them out.
Aww, 50-degree temperature. That’s a heatwave considering it’s 20-degrees here in Central Ohio. Now that’s it’s January, we’re just getting true winter freezing temperatures. 😏
Question: how do I handle chicken manure in my raised beds, zone 5 WI. Friends just got chickens, offering up their extra mixed with pine chips. Love your channels! Long-time fan!
Anyone up north (I'm in Northern Indiana) have a good option for buying and variety for onion starts like he is planting? Ive had horrible luck with seeds and going into my second year trying sets. None flowered, but they only got golf ball sized at best from sets.
Please go for ducks instead of chickens. Wayyyyy better fertilizer, it’s cold not hot like chicken poop. It promotes worms to grow And they don’t scratch. Great for slugs great for everything. Super easy to keep in since runners are not flying plus they heard so it’s easy to get them in at night
I mean... climate is relative. You are used to what you are used to. But when you said down to the 50s I laughed out loud. When I was in San Diego, though, I know what you mean by 50s is cold. Meanwhile, here, I woke up to zero degrees fahrenheit and that is warm compared to some temps we have had so far this winter.
Technically where I grew up, it was illegal to allow your pet cat to roam, but my family was always happy when people in the neighborhood did because of the mouse control the cats provided.🙃
Hello Kevin in your next video can u pls talk about how to get rid of rats but I can't have cats because I am allergic but only if u want to because I am not your mom😅😂😂
@epichomesteading oh ok thanks so much Kevin ya I'm only 13 years old so still have a bit to learn but 2024 was my best year I got 10 cauliflower heads 5 broccoli heads and alot of cabbages I already planted some seeds and they are looking good but thank u for all your help if not for u my garden would not have been amazing 🌶️🍋😂🙏

that is cute you think 50 is cold lol! much love man! great video as always
I can see in the near future Keving buying the house next door with the avocado trees 😊
That would be so cool to have the opportunity to expand the homestead in that way 😮
@megmoore335 I know, right?

I am still planning my garden plot. I love the idea of the sunroom.

He accidentally called fabka babka, he was pointing at the mural they painted when he said her name again
8:40 I like how casual he’s talking to us ❤
It just snowed today but I've got my onions in trays. Our homestead cat is black and white named Bones and he eats mice out of the garden shed. ❤🎉

Zone 6 I had to bring the entire banana plant. It's now bigger than me and I don't know how I'm gonna take it out.
One of my favorite cooking root crops to enjoy in the kitchen 💚 Enjoyed watching you plant!
Bananas!!! Cool!!! I’m getting ready to start some onions in the morning!
Oh man, that is so much easier as a way to plant them than what I usually do, which is trying to put them directly in almost like you do with sets.

50’s 😂 Single digits in Maine this weekend! 😁 jk - if it was going to be in the 90’s here it would be extreme. Great video!
50s is cold? Maaan that's literally summer for us in the Midwest lol.
No, 110 with 95% humidity one day, 78 with 96% humidity the next day 😂

Those bananas are so cool!

Recommend composting it 1st, it's a hot manure and can burn plants if used directly too much
Great bananas bro , great accomplishment
Nice! Hey what kind of broccoli was that??? It looked amazing!!
Are you going to get more hen?

Do you ever have issues with the cats poopin in the garden? If so any tips to keep them out.
