Zatarain's makes some really good boxed meals that you add your own meat or sausage to. They taste just as good or better than the microwave dishes, and the price point is much better. Totally recommend them. Great video!
Larry, i like their dry rice and bean product better, and it doesn't take that much longer to cook. Try grilling some johnsonville metts on the grill and then cut them up and add to the red beans and rice, also any of the following diced up peppers is good with this, bell peppers, pablanos, serranos, jalapenos, etc, just use the heat level you prefer
@@drew23ish it is great, i have been doing it my way for years before Larry showed this. Also, if you want to give it a little gumbo type taste, add a can of rotel tomatoes, and buy a bag of salad shrimp in your grocer's freezer, add some at the last few minutes of cooking because they are very small, and only take a few minutes to cook, they are really good and have a good shrimp flavor and cost is about $ 7.99 for a 30 ounce bag, which is cheap for shrimp, and you won't need to use the whole bag for just 1 box of red beans and rice with sausage, add some diced potatoes, red ones, and you get a huge meal.
I usually get the jambalaya mix and add shrimp, sausage and bell peppers to it. It's a cheap and easy meal which is great for a college student like myself.
@@JessycaLunawoona that is a great idea also. Another one is if you are a college student you can buy the bag shrimp flavored ramen noodles 4/$1.00, a bag of the salad shrimp at appx. $7.00 and it is enough for 8 bags of ramen, easily, and that is being generous with the shrimp. I also like to poach an egg or two when i boil the noodles, if you like eggs. I wish you well in school.
Good suggestions here, thanks. I've done all kinds of things with ramen and never thought to add shrimp. Kind of a no brainer now that you mention it. Keep some frozen veggies, I like green beans and rough cut spinach, with that egg and you have yourself a pretty healthy cheap filling meal.
Lard depends on what the pig ate. It’s surprisingly rich in monounsaturated fatty acids in any case, the same things that make olive oil considered healthy.
I think the worst are usually the ones that are more solid at room temperature. Fat on steak is pretty hard and doesn't melt at room temperature but pork fat does get softer.
honestly, as a native new orleanian, ive made and ate red beans and rice for about 40% of the last twenty years of mondays and on many hundreds of other days of the week. ive eaten my grandmas, my moms, mine, from a can, from a restaurant, etc. and popeyes red beans are actually really good. we almost always get them as a side. also zatarains dirty rice mix is very good
My grandparents on my fathers side were both born in the late 1890s. My grandmother would cook using real lard, PLENTY of real butter and ate real meats. They were both average/thin builds and lived to be just shy of 100 years old.
Bean and rice recipes are my favorite for getting through a week. Home-making them is dirt cheap and easy too, way cheaper than the Zataran's Red Beans and Rice if you get them both dry and in bulk, they will last a long time. I also love the fact that even the lowest grade cuts of meat taste great with them, saving you even more money.
I gotta say, Lard is alright. Besides, if people are against Lard, they should avoid Authentic Tamales, since that Tamales dough is basically a pound of Lard with Corn Flour and a few more ingredients.
here the way see it what do you want in your food potentially GMO modified who knows what vegetable oil wtf is really in that, canola a GMO product and number of others but lard and dripping are what they are simply rendered fat and my other go to is extra virgin olive oil seen it made and that's my fav its far more available and cheaper for some reason lard needs a fridge but frying it it yeah that special steak damm yeah!

Recently bought some good quality lard, beef tallow, and duck fat from Amazon. Some good eating is now in the house. Saturated fat is not the devil for most people, its the over consumption of refined sugar and just plain over indulgence in all foods.
If they don’t like your opinion why are they watching. Because that’s what it is, your opinion on the food and I personally enjoy your videos and value your opinion. I have tried several items based on your videos.
I LOVE LARD!! I live in Amish country and they bring donuts to every farmers’ market that are cooked in lard. Amazing. And lard is much more filling than other forms of fat!
Texas Pete and Frank's are the best. Melt a stick of butter, add Frank's red hot, then a bit of the Texas Pete and a dab of ketchup for thickness, bring it to a boil, put in the the freezer for few for cooling (not too long) and you've got some dope wing sauce.
Love you and your daughter's videos Larry! I look forward to each and every upload! Your Biscuit and Gravy recipe is so delicious, I use it at least once a month now!
I make a very similar meal at home. Andouille Sausage, Onion, tomatoes, brown rice, red and black beans. It makes a huge pot cheap and my family loves it. My grandmother made it with red beans, my mother made it with black. I like it with both. Thanks for the videos.
I just had Zatarains blacked chicken alfredo for dinner today and I thought of you! Lol it had such a good flavor! It tasted way better than homemade! I really didn't notice the price. But the brand products are ridiculously delicious! I live in Louisiana and that's some good redbean and rice there!
The company used to have vacuumed packed microwave bags of dirty rice, jambalaya, red beans and rice, etc. I enjoyed them and wish they would bring the meals back.
I love your videos. I live in Canada and don't get all the products you review but I still enjoy watching. I like going to American grocery stores and seeing all the food items we don't get here whenever I visit the States. I don't get who would leave mean comments on your videos. All you're doing is reviewing food. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep watching :)
My mom used to love the frozen zatarains blackened chicken Alfredo. I liked it too, I just don't like spinach (or whatever the green, leafy stuff is that's in there) and it's too hard to avoid in it. But it's one of the rare things that doesn't have that frozen food taste even in the microwave.
Texas Pete hot sauce, navy mess decks staple, this with Lea & Parrins Worcestershire sauce. Texas Pete on breakfast of champions. It's a layered omelette that I created for busy day's before a Mk 45 5" 54 cal gun shoot, needed those calories to get 15-50 rounds out the barrel. Served '99-'03, Gunner's Mate 2nd Class.
I usually use leftover bacon fat for cooking, but when stocks of it are getting thin, I have a large jar of coconut oil. I prefer both to butter and let's not even touch margarine or vegetable shortning with a thousand foot pole. As for the mean and nasty comments -- eh, bugger them. Just keep doing what you are doing, Larry. I've been watching your channel grow since about 50K and you more than deserve the succes you have. Cheers mate.
Another great video Larry. I am curious about all of the hateful comments, but I'm not sure I want to see a video. Maybe you should just forget about the negativity. 1) I love lard! I'm on a HF/LC diet, so it works for me...and the flavor is great. 2) Zatarain's has a boxed version you can tinker with that's cheaper and tastier. 3) This calls for a video of you making a nice homemade pot of red beans and rice.
@@iStormUK yeah, but in my area Aldi is a sub par discount store. No name brands and vegetables that AR iffy. Their goat cheese is amazing though and half the price of Krogers.
I love red beans and rice, I make mine now with red bans and cauliflower..had to add extra spices and herbs but it taste ok. Thanks for making these videos. Have a great week and God bless you and your family. 🍁🇺🇸✌
Lard is amazing. I use it as much as possible, adds a very particular taste. Especially to fish & chips, makes all the difference there! Also a fan of dripping on nice hot pork sandwich.
Although I occasionally make Red Beans and Rice from scratch, the Zatarain's is one of my favorite frozen meals. $2.89 at my local grocer, and sometimes they do a bogo deal, that is when I stocking up. I love Lard and Rants! Mean comments come with your channel growth, wear it like a badge!
I tried this for the first time this past Friday and was just thinking that you should try these out! You're timing is impecable! I got this on sale for 1.00 at my local Food Lion. To me it wasn't bad, but I personally prefer the dry rice products where you add your own meat. You should definitely try the shrimp Alfredo next time.
For the price i have always liked the boxed stuff better and make it the way i want it with sausage and shrimp. Thankfully they have had a lower sodium version out for a while because the regular stuff is quite salty. Great video!
I get zatarans dehydrated red beans and rice and add smoked sausage and a can of Kroger red beans red beans are different from kidney beans and it's delicious I like to add onions and green bell peppers too
I would say next time buy a box of zatarain's rice jambalaya family pack add one big can of diced with juice add whole can of tomatoes, two kielbasa sausage rings, two large onion chopped, two big green peppers chopped, first cook the zatarain's rice half way done, than add all ingredients, at end everything is done, add one cup of shape shredded cheddar, mix and serve to family it's Awesome try it you will love it!
I went to my local playground out here in the Southwest - the 99 Only store. They carry the Big Easy Red Beans and Rice from New Orleans for $1.99 or about half of what you paid. 12 oz portion. I can honestly say that it looked better than what you cooked up there.
I dont see how anyone could leave you mean comments! I love your channel you are so funny and honestly truthful about most of the things I've tried that you reviewed. Also never stop saying you the people! It's so funny
Maybe don't do a video about the comments. Trolls live on attention. By making a video you are validating their shit stirring. As the saying goes "Don't feed the troll"
I usually cook dinner at my daughters once a week, one week she suggested red beans and rice with sausage. I got there early and started cooking (canned) red beans with a smoked ham hock and the trinity then got some rice going in some pork stock with the sliced sausage. My son in law got home and said " uuummm Dad? we usually use these" and pulled out 2 boxes of zatarains red beans and rice....
Get a can of Blue Runner Red Beans, add a package of sliced sausage and rice and you’re in business. Let the sausage and beans simmer for at least an hour.
Mmmm, I like cooking with lard! There are so many things that just aren't the same without it. Several years ago when I was experimenting with making different dehydrated foods for ultralight backpacking one of the things I made was fully cooked and then dehydrated red beans and hamhocks. That on top of minute-rice in a wide-mouth Thermos plus boiling water and sealed for at least 30 minutes gives a very decent meal.
I am a " Zat " fan . I hear ya on the price . A little steep. BUT , may I recommend to you a box of Zatarains Dirty Rice Mix. You add your own ground meat ( beef , chicken , pork or whatever you like ). Doctor it up a little with some chopped onion , peppers and fresh garlic and it is really a one pot delicious meal. I never had their frozen dinners but their boxed " starter kits " are great. ALSO , try their seasoned corn flour fish fry mix !! Dynamite stuff !! May the Creole Gods shine upon you .
I heart lard. I have a few old recipes from my (northern) grandmother with lard as an ingredient (mostly for baking.) I am still amazed they did frozen meals. Always looking for more recipes in this vein
Easy make your own, 1 cup long grain rice (unless your living on a starvation diet thoroughly rinse your rice till water runs clear), in a pyrex bowl, add enough water to approx. equal the rice in volume, put a small ceramic or Correl plate lid on, in the microwave (1000 watt), 23 minutes at 30% power.- A quality glass packaged jar of beans in a pan, your favorite (mine is pinto), add a 16 oz pkg of quality prepared sausage sliced up (you can pre-fry your sausage if you like a crunchier texture), a couple pieces of precooked smoked bacon crumbled, a small can of mild chili peppers, a bit of salt and pepper with a bit of water to thin (not too much), cook, stirring, till hot and thickened, but not too thick, you be the judge.- In a separate pan slightly heat a couple tablespoons of oil (I like sesame oil), a package of quality brown gravy mix thoroughly mixed with the heated oil and then the proper amount of water (plus a little extra to keep it from being too thick, you be the judge when cooking) on the package instructions (not as good as real Rue but acceptable considering the time intense and skills of making real rue), mix ingredients together, except the rice and heat up again a few minutes till bubbling hot, pour over a serving of hot rice. At this point I like several large globs of original Tabasco sauce (I'm genetically modified to handle and much enjoy very spicy food), careful though if you have issues with hot spicy sauce. YUM-YUM.
Omg i can’t believe you have never had a pot of good ol red beans and rice 🍛.....you and your wife should def take a trip to New Orleans ASAP lol you won’t regret it i promise you
I used to get their dry black bean and rice mix. We would toss it in the rice cooker with some chunks of lamb or goat. Its great. I cant get it here anymore though.
I found these at a local grocery outlet for $2 which is a better deal. They're pretty good for a frozen lunch, add a good amount of crystal hot sauce and it's better than a lot of the crap out there for frozen meals.
I have never heard of anyone being *against* cooking in lard, as far as i have experienced, it is acknowledged that cooking in lard will make your food taste better, better is subjective, but it does add a ton of flavour. The argument against it, and the reason i don't cook with lard, it has a ton of calories, so i don't use lard except for special occasions, like cooking a traditional Danish (or your own region/country) dish.
Scaj It might be more calories but your body finds plant originated oils like traditional sunflower oil much harder to decompose so in the end it might be less but stays for longer. On the other hand try cooking in Coconut fat/oil, it's realy good especially with some plain and simple salted eggs.
i always watch this channel because it makes my meals more enjoyable. thank you for bringing this channel on youtube. i hope you get more suscribers and patrons!😁
Texas Pete was invented here in North Carolina. They were originally going to name it "Mexican Joe," because people associated spicy stuff with Mexico, but the inventor preferred to name it after somewhere in the USA, so they chose Texas. I've actually driven by the TW Garner plant in Winston-Salem many times when I've been down there, where Texas Pete has been made since 1942.
red beans and rice is quite amazing with andouille sausage and chorizo but that's definitely if you want the best kind of a home cook meal For this microwave meal a little bit pricey for A bowl of rice LOL😎🍻👍
I thoroughly enjoy this channel. I don't find anything offensive or not likable. If I did I simply would go away. I really don't understand why some people waste their time watching stuff they don't like and then criticize and say things to intentionally hurt someone. How small and insecure can you be? Find something you do like. Watch that. There's got to be thousands maybe millions of other channels on Utube and something is bound to interest you. Perhaps you'll be happier too.
Kroger's has sales on these meals pretty regularly, and during sales they cost about $2.50 each. Same with the Michael Angelo meals. These two meals are by far the best, I think. And of course you can add more of your own sausage or whatever if that's what you like.
They have this in a dry state( without sausage) but I used love making them when I was forced to eat super cheap, and my nephew ate mayo by the tub. I just threw in hamburger to the dry stuff, it's was so good.
I keep a couple boxes of Zatarain's dry mixes in the pantry, all the time...they're good even without meat (just add extra beans)...haven't seen the frozen dinners here...yet.
I agree. These are good in a pinch when on sale, but for 4 bucks, you can just buy the Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice kit and some Polish sausage and make in in less that 30 minutes.
Their frozen Crawfish Etouffee is actually very good but not sure on availability since I think its newer. I have found it at H.E.B. here in Texas but not at Kroger so if you can get your hands on that one, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
HEB also has their own brand that's similar called BigEasy Meals. That's some good stuff and if you haven't had the HEB brand Southern Style chicken strips/nuggets/filets you need to try them like yesterday!
I've had this once and I agree with everything you said. It should be a $1 cheaper. Also, I know you did a video of the Banquet Mega Bowl Deep Dish Bacon Mac and Cheese, but you should do one on the Meat Lovers Deep Dish meal.

I dont see how anyone could leave you mean comments! I love your channel you are so funny and honestly truthful about most of the things I've tried that you reviewed. Also never stop saying you the people! It's so funny
Your videos are entertaining and informative i love your voice as well.
I used to eat these occasionally when I didn't feel like actually putting together a real meal! They're not bad. One of the better frozen dinners tbh.
Maybe don't do a video about the comments. Trolls live on attention. By making a video you are validating their shit stirring. As the saying goes "Don't feed the troll"
Horacio Valdez we want a comment video for *THE PEOPLE*
True; it'll just make them try harder.
I usually cook dinner at my daughters once a week, one week she suggested red beans and rice with sausage. I got there early and started cooking (canned) red beans with a smoked ham hock and the trinity then got some rice going in some pork stock with the sliced sausage. My son in law got home and said " uuummm Dad? we usually use these" and pulled out 2 boxes of zatarains red beans and rice....
i love zatarains stuff especially their gumbo but never knew they made frozen stuff
They make really good jambalaya mix that is bomb af and easy to make. Just add anadoulie sausage and shrimp to it.
I hope they invent smellivision soon because I would love to smell your home cooking
I don't understand mean comments either. If you don't like a channel then just don't watch. This is a wonderful channel with great videos.
I love Zatarain's dry mixes, but I never tried their frozen foods because I like adding my own seasonings and vegetables to the former.
The frozen Dirty Rice by Zatarain's is really good, cannot find it anymore in my area, but if you see it, try it, really good stuff.
Those are not available in Canada for sure! We had the dry version , but I don’t know if we still have them....
Lard and MSG are two of my favorite things!
I think your awesome Larry you make us look at the back of the box can etc and that is a good thing.
YUM-YUM.
Omg i can’t believe you have never had a pot of good ol red beans and rice 🍛.....you and your wife should def take a trip to New Orleans ASAP lol you won’t regret it i promise you
I'm on holiday in Florida over from the UK. I made sure we stopped on a dollar tree out of respect for this channel 😁
I fried chicken in lard a couple of weeks ago. I have no regrets.
On Monday's in La. fresh cooked Red Beans and Rice is for sale or free everywhere.
A big plate of Cajun Red Beans is about $3 .
I love Zatarain's Jambalaya mix. I try to make it once a month or so.
i always watch this channel because it makes my meals more enjoyable. thank you for bringing this channel on youtube. i hope you get more suscribers and patrons!😁
I use a lot of home rendered lard for cooking at home. It's cheap, nutritious and flavorful.
I love red beans and rice and I love the zattarains carbonara and blackened chicken Alfredo meals, haven't tried the red beans and rice
I keep a couple boxes of Zatarain's dry mixes in the pantry, all the time...they're good even without meat (just add extra beans)...haven't seen the frozen dinners here...yet.
Love Zatarains boxed "Dirty Rice" have never seen the frozen version!
I agree. These are good in a pinch when on sale, but for 4 bucks, you can just buy the Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice kit and some Polish sausage and make in in less that 30 minutes.
I buy the Zatarains from the rice isle and I grill chicken and andouille sausages and add it in and it’s goooooood!
Thank you for another great video wolf pit
Their frozen Crawfish Etouffee is actually very good but not sure on availability since I think its newer. I have found it at H.E.B. here in Texas but not at Kroger so if you can get your hands on that one, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
HEB also has their own brand that's similar called BigEasy Meals. That's some good stuff and if you haven't had the HEB brand Southern Style chicken strips/nuggets/filets you need to try them like yesterday!
The rice to beans ratio is actually correct. The beans are normally 1-2 chef spoon portion or 1 4oz laddle it's norm bro. Gonzales, LA
I've had this once and I agree with everything you said. It should be a $1 cheaper.
Also, I know you did a video of the Banquet Mega Bowl Deep Dish Bacon Mac and Cheese, but you should do one on the Meat Lovers Deep Dish meal.
Great review! I'm gonna try it. Gonna use cayenne powder though instead of hot sauce :)
Hey brother, keep up the great work! Ignore the hate. I always enjoy and look forward to your videos!
