This was the Game Gear game we had I played the most. I never once play the system witj batteries though it often came on family trips with me and I'd play once we got wherever with the power adapter plugged in and I'd lay on the floor. My newphews get to sit on the sofa with their switch, little jealous. 😁
Question please: Does this version play the bike engine sound when you turn off the music? (Just as the game boy version does, by pressing select before a race, that turns music into engine sounds)
This is actually a pretty respectable port of the Genesis/MegaDrive version. Most everything is intact, minus some of the combat options like weapons and back fists. I mean for an 8 bit portable console I'd say this is a pretty damn good iteration. I only wish I knew about this when I was a kid. I had a GG but had no idea this game existed on the handheld.
it would be awesome to see it come back. not only having the same fast high speed fighting gameplay but customisation of both bike and character would be awesome too....like say if someone wanted to make a punk to ride with then they could while someone else could make someone totally different on a different bike....online gameplay would be a definite plus for it too
I actually started playing the Mega Drive Road Rash games only quite recently and I had a blast! The games play fine, are loaded with style (dem music!!) and were groundbreaking at the time. They also look better and are more advanced than any bike games I've seen on SNES. Road Rash 1 and 2 in particular look very nice with their mix or cartoony and realistic graphics. Road Rash 3 went digitized and it's a mixed bag visually but still cool for the time. And the Master System/Game Gear ports are very impressive all things considered with fantastic music conversion by Matt Furniss. The Game Boy version simply pales in comparison. And the 32-bit game also called "Road Rash" and which was first released on 3DO is great, too!
I have suffered that problem myself actually, and had it fixed successfully. But even allowing for that, there is a "sweet spot" for brightness/contrast when filming handhelds.
@@crimsontide1980 But it's a shame that the Sega CD version of RR didn't take advantage of the Sega CD's graphics chip, like in the driving sections of Batman Returns
Mark always gives the Game Gear a hard time for the battery life, but it did come with a rechargable battery pack (at least mine did back in the day). The entire contraption was about as portable as cinderblock, but it worked.
Pretty cool music for a cartridge, and EA definitely needs to do a version for the current platforms, man I have fun playing my Genesis version... the batterie companies must have made a fortune in the 90's with the Game Boy, Game Gear, and the Atari Lynx oh the good old days :-P
I think Mark needs to replace the caps in his GameGear before it stops working, mine did the same back in the day, where the screen kept getting that white spot in the middle. It was an industry wide problem of bad batches of caps from China, and Taiwan This game however was a blast to play back in the day for sure.
Mark (pause).. You do realize that the more you zoom on that screen, the harder it is for a viewer to see what's happening on it? Gamegears small screen should be filmed away from camera, room should have good lighting, that way blacks will seem deeper.
It's mainly cause of bad batches of cheap Chinese caps that where floating around the electronics industry at the time, and if your good with a soldering iron, and find the right caps, you can fix most of the problems with the GameGear's screen, also buffing the plastic on the screen cover can help as well. in extreme cases it also take replacing the LCD itself which can be tricky.
Hell Yes! I tell myself that all the time. EA has got to bring Road Rash into the new millenium. They brought back SSX and Syndicate and they made an interesting prototype video for a new Road Rash. They're more than capable of making a new Road Rash reboot.
Damn I used to have that...I still have the booklet for it, my older brother literally lost about half of my Game Gear games when we were younger...idk how, such a dumbass lol. Maybe he sold them, who knows. I miss this game though, awesome review sir!
Agreed, but still where the fuck do the games stay for the vita? (although I own one, I want it to have more awesome games on it, the library now is rather small)
Yeah, this is a good version. Better than the Game Boy version, I think (and on that note, it's a little odd that Road Rash was on the GB but not the SNES... huh.). Also, there is a Sega CD Road Rash game. It's not one of the better Road Rash games, but it is there.
Come on mark is modern age the game gear has a lot of mods and one of them is the screen LED mode that change that 4 hour to 8 hour duration. It also give a better look to the screen. You have a modded Genesis so you need now a modded game gear.
I'd just like to point out that the Raspberry Pi - reportedly - has superior graphics capabilities to the original Xbox. For £20 or so. Without too much fanboyism - take that, £250 PlayStation Vita.
If you wish to last 10 hours of gameplay with the gamegear, remove the color lcd screen and replace it with a b&w screen, haha who ever tout that color devouwers battery's sooo fast.

Wow, it looks pretty close to the Genesis version of Road Rash, I'm impressed for it being a Game Gear game.
I still got my Road Rash for Game Gear,
that awesome 8 bit music brings back SO many races for me
Question please:
Does this version play the bike engine sound when you turn off the music? (Just as the game boy version does, by pressing select before a race, that turns music into engine sounds)
Usually i get 5 hours or more out of mine with pretty cheap batteries, the technology has come on a long way since the early 90's
Yes, Road Rash is awesome. Especially RR3 on the Genesis and the PC/3DO version. A 360/PS3 version needs to be made.
Road Rash on the Master System is pretty damn amazing, almost identical to the Megadrive version.

I miss the old classic game room before he started doing these live looking shows
5000 Batteries? And what do you do when the week is over?
Hell yeah, I want to see a return of Road Rash!
Can you review Space Harrier on Game Gear? That was my favorite game on that system.
sega was ahead of its time
the background was awesome on this video!
it would be awesome to see it come back. not only having the same fast high speed fighting gameplay but customisation of both bike and character would be awesome too....like say if someone wanted to make a punk to ride with then they could while someone else could make someone totally different on a different bike....online gameplay would be a definite plus for it too

There has to be replacement screens for those things somewhere.
I have suffered that problem myself actually, and had it fixed successfully.
But even allowing for that, there is a "sweet spot" for brightness/contrast when filming handhelds.
Will I be able to finish 2 rounds of Mortal Kombat if I hook up my Game Gear to a car battery?
There is a road rash on the Sega CD
And it has one of the greatest soundtracks on a video game! Awesome version of RR
@@crimsontide1980 But it's a shame that the Sega CD version of RR didn't take advantage of the Sega CD's graphics chip, like in the driving sections of Batman Returns

I would like to see a new iteration of the Road Rash series.
i swear wherever that is that he is doing the show from looks like heaven
If EA made a new road rash you know fine well it will have loot boxes, online only, 9.99 per new track and weapon dyes etc
Pretty cool music for a cartridge, and EA definitely needs to do a version for the current platforms, man I have fun playing my Genesis version...

this was posted on my birthday, THANX!! :)
Man, I think I love SMS/Game Gear audio over Genesis.
Mark, how much does it cost to ship items to your space station?
I almost bought Road Rash 2 on the Game Gear the other day, it looks like it runs pretty good
there is but mark has already reviewed it for the 3DO i think

Little recommendation to Mark next time he records a Game Gear review - turn the brightness down on the screen!
Loved this game. First played it on the computer. Also had the N64 one.
i dreamed i bought a game gear in a strange little shop tonight. now i want it. i miss my old game gearrrr!
Found it at The Exchange a year or two ago for $4, totally worth it!
I had this game!! Good times. How about Sonic 2 for the Game Gear while we're at it? =P
it really depends on what batteries you use if you those cheap batteries those will drain fast
For the ps1 there were a few, including the same one that was ported to the 3DO.
my fav version was the ps1 and n64 ones. i never really played the 3do one though
There was a Road Rash on the Sega CD.
yes, it was basically this game but in higher resolution
I had 2 AA batteries on the desk sitting here. When they saw the video they jumped off the desk and run
Mark (pause).. You do realize that the more you zoom on that screen, the harder it is for a viewer to see what's happening on it?

Road Rash on the Game Gear looks fairly decent. It's a pity it didn't have the awesome soundtrack from the 16 Bit games.
Road Rash was my first game gear game!
Somebody needs to program a homebrew version of Road Rash for the Vectrex!
I was thinking that myself, the screen seems to get worse in every video.
Hell Yes! I tell myself that all the time. EA has got to bring Road Rash into the new millenium. They brought back SSX and Syndicate and they made an interesting prototype video for a new Road Rash. They're more than capable of making a new Road Rash reboot.
Why isn't there a new Road Rash for XBLA?
Playing RR online with your own customised rider and bike would RULE!!!
No exitebike?
I hope this comes to the 3DS.
I loved Road Rash on the Megadrive.
I agree, EA does need to bring this series back. Everyone spam EA's Facebook with Road Rash Remake requests!
Damn I used to have that...I still have the booklet for it, my older brother literally lost about half of my Game Gear games when we were younger...idk how, such a dumbass lol. Maybe he sold them, who knows. I miss this game though, awesome review sir!
"...newer consoles, like the 32X!" Lol, you crack me up.
I'd like to see a Road Rash for the Atari 7800. But I'd like to see every game remade for the Atari 7800.
Agreed, but still where the fuck do the games stay for the vita? (although I own one, I want it to have more awesome games on it, the library now is rather small)
Yeah, this is a good version. Better than the Game Boy version, I think (and on that note, it's a little odd that Road Rash was on the GB but not the SNES... huh.).

I still have a working Sega Game Gear :D I do not have Road Rash though :(
nice mega drive drop.. sonic was pretty good on the game gear
I favor the need for a Road Rash in 2012. (Or, even 2020...if EA will ever revive this series.)
this is a great version of a great game, and IMO has better music
The intro was slower this time!
I had this game for PC. Fantastic
yes, it was the same version as this
Wasn't there a PS1 version?
@ravenclanx this IS how the old CGR was lol
This is coming to 3DS virtual console for sure.
Come on mark is modern age the game gear has a lot of mods and one of them is the screen LED mode that change that 4 hour to 8 hour duration. It also give a better look to the screen. You have a modded Genesis so you need now a modded game gear.
mk gg was pretty cool back in the days too.
Road rash = best racing game ever (especially PC version)
I use rechargeable on my Game Gear!
EA made a road rash for the new consoles... but canceled it in early alpha :( They basically said it wouldnt work in the current market a cut it.
I'm surprised EA hasn't released some kind of HD remake for PSN and XBLA... and wii whatever
road rash its pretty amazing on the Pc as well
Road Rash would make a great 3DS download game.
I have a road reash game on the sarurn its pretty good
>:( you know what we need? Road Rash 4!!!
actually there is a Sega CD version
Road Rash is an awesome game.
Sega did not think of the future when developing this system :\
take a look at Siren: Blood Curse (PS3)
they should make a 3ds download version
Ah Road Rash, one of the games that made EA big, thanks to Sega. Just too bad that once they went to Sony EA kept scrubbing Sega..
I think the game gear screens get crappier with time.
Love the review...but damn did that not age well at all.
it was ahead of it,s time!!!!
Or a couple rechargeable ones :p
I'd just like to point out that the Raspberry Pi - reportedly - has superior graphics capabilities to the original Xbox. For £20 or so. Without too much fanboyism - take that, £250 PlayStation Vita.
same here... but I had rechargeables :L
The best part about this game was kicking another rider into a car.
If you wish to last 10 hours of gameplay with the gamegear, remove the color lcd screen and replace it with a b&w screen, haha who ever tout that color devouwers battery's sooo fast.
actually, just replace the tube light with LED lights, thats what drained the battery, a big stonking tube light.
Renegade that's what I use! 8-12 hours of battery life
DUKE NUKEM FOREVER !!! THEY LIVE !!!
i played some version on this on pc ages ago FUCKING AWESOME!!
even better on the psp
No, the answer is Road Rash 2, but you're close.
batteries trumble with fear lol
people comment so fastly without looking at the video first that they dont even know what theyre talking about.
re make please
I preferred the n64 version to be honest.
Batteries?! Bitch please i had a battery pack.
