Just so I don't have to keep repeating myself: the thumbnail style/concept inspired by @gxace - who creates AMAZING content on photography, cinematography, and camera gear. With that said, I wanted to take my own twist and used Baybayin script which is a pre-colonial Filipino writing system. It says "ama" which translates to "father". Why? Because I am Filipino and for those who watch the review, it's no secret that the identity of being a father was the main perspective I took in creating this lens review.

It's crazy how much influence he has taken lately on so many people on TH-cam. I still recognized immediately that it's you. Seen your black cutting mat so often lately in your shorts 😃✌️
I even got one for myself when I start to record some stuff by myself. 😅

28mm & 50mm f/2 are probably one of the most classic SLR combos from the film era. I think this is why many of us gravitate to the 18mm & 33mm f/1.4. I plan on getting both...

I just took this 33mm f1.4 out for a first test run today. It's excellent. The fast continuous autofocus is working great (combined with my X-T5 camera with its all-important firmware update). Seems exceptionally sharp too.
I bought it to provide a good low light alternative to my beloved 16-55 f2.8, but I'm also loving the little things like how the 33mm doesn't stick out as much - so doesn't feel like it's going to get bashed when I'm moving through crowds.
I was afraid that 33mm on a crop sensor would be too tight for street photography, but it definitely isn't for mine. I still found myself having to walk in quite close. I like having 16mm capability for some 'fancy' close-in shots, but otherwise this 33mm gives me almost everything.

  • @andychandler3992

Just ordered it, I went for this over the 56mm as I like to have some background to tell a story, not just a person in a pretty setting that's blurred out. The 33mm just checked all the boxes for my portait lens

This is the lens that made me sell my 56/1.2 and is basically glued to my X-T3 since I bought it about a year ago. I was definitely not a 50mm fan before I got this lens, but boy was I wrong!

I had a big smile on my face watching this video. Thank you for sharing your beautiful family with us!
For me, I documented the first two years of my son's life using an x100v. It let me stay near him for safety, and it could focus nice and close. But autofocus was...a challenge :)
Now he's three, and I've switched to an X-T5. What a revelation for autofocus, particularly AF-C eye tracking! I've been using it with the old 56 f1/2, which produces stunning images, but just like you said, gets me farther away than I'd like. Also using the 35 f/2...but it's missing something.
Finally ordered a 33, and I can't wait to see what I can capture with it!

As a musician/sound engineer who’s looking to get into photography and cinematography, it really irks me the way most content creators handle microphones, especially on TikTok; people really hold lavaliers like they’re broadcast mics, all the while their audio is clipping and distorting. When importing my images, I imported the 18mm first, and I was making comments (talking to myself) like "Wow, this lens and focal length is so good! These Images are so great"... Then, after importing the 33mm straight after, I was like "Ah ok... This 33mm is actually way nicer". There is just something special about it! Good news is, they are the perfect combination to have on a body each for a wedding or event, so I am pretty stoked about that! Thanks for the video. I really appreciate your work.

Nice video, thanks! I agree, I love the lens, too....or I did when I shot Fuji and owned it..:) It was the lens I kept the longest and didn´t want to give up although I was not shooting Fuji anymore. For what I mostly do I figured full frame is just better and the Canon RF 50mm f1,2...oh yes...but honestly, I´d have no problem going back to Fuji and their new primes (18mm f1,4 33mm f1,4 and the new 56mm f1,2 wr) It´s such a nice system and very affordable compared to FF!

Reggie you superdad - your comments about shooting children being the hardest test of AF is so spot-on I nearly spit out my coffee with joy. Want a real AF test? Shoot a kid swinging. Its so simple, so common, and yet so hard. IMO the 23mm is better in this respect as it focuses a little closer and, being a little wider, puts you in safe "parenting" distance to the child whether looking for close-ups or "scenes". Not to mention, the little kids do not tend to stray far enough away from me for me to use anything longer. As they grow up the focal length will increase. : )
The other point to make is that shooting little kids like you're being paid for it WILL make you better photographer - arguably it is harder than shooting pro sports or wildlife because they are even more unpredictable. I definitely figured out how to get the most of the XT3 AF system this way and, no joke, I've gone full pre-shot ES 20fps CH bursting to get the (or rather "a") shot. It is a pain culling hundreds of photos for a few moments, but sometimes that is what it takes . . . BTW even with the 56mm WR "slow" lens, I've caught some amazing stuff doing short high speed bursts.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  ปีที่แล้ว

100% - my preferred focal length tends to be the 18 for that safe parenting distance.

Man, I bought this lens. Just sent it in for a trade in and they lowered the offer upon arrival so its being sent back to me. I wish my brain didn't over complicate everything. I got really attached to my 21mm along with wanting to shoot like Alex Webb so I am wanting to sell the 33mm and get a 23mm voigtlander and have no other lenses. I don't know what happened, but I get really awful anxiety having more than one focal length. It started about 2 months ago. I just wish I could use and enjoy this lens without feeling this sense of dread, doubt and fear of not having the wider focal length attached. The more I try to improve my skills, the more it feels like I am trying to solve an impossible math problem. I don't enjoy photography anymore. It has become a true sickness for me. If my skills matched my obsession, I would be OK with that.

I've had both the 18mm 1.4 and the 33mm 1.4 and sold them both. Purchased the new 23mm 1.4 LM WR and found that I can get similar looking shots as both the 18mm and 33mm by just moving around a bit with my feet and/or cropping, and it negates the need to carry two lenses with me (no one likes swapping primes around constantly). I then purchased used copies of the 18mm f/2 and 35mm 1.4 for pretty low prices and found that I gravitate towards these lenses more are they are just so much more practical due to the significantly reduced size and weight. On an X-T5 body, the AF performance is pretty satisfactory for both lenses. These days, I only use the 23mm 1.4 LM WR when I care about critical sharpness and just want to carry around one lens (and let's face it, for most family documentary style photos, we as photographers are the only ones who really care about pixel-level sharpness, microcontrast, CA, etc. - no other family members will be able to tell the difference!). Even the 18mm f/2 can be pretty sharp stopped down in combination with a decent RAW processor (such as DXO PureRaw 3) if I *really* needed that additional detail. Ultimately, I find these new Fuji primes amazing in terms of IQ, but they really feel less practical for casual day-to-day use due to the increased size and weight, which takes away from the original Fujifilm ethos.

Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort to produce these videos. $800 on this Fuji 33mm f1.4 lens however, it's a bit steep for me. Here's a suggestion for a future video. How about trying out the Viltrox 33mm f1.4, then make a comparison. The reviews are extremely close on Amazon - Fuji 4.8 stars; Viltrox 4.7. However, the Viltrox is $279; that's 65% cheaper. Thanks.

I think the Sigma 18-50 might be a good solution too for kids and documentary stuff too. Its like 100g lighter than the 33, Auto focus is very good (near native performance IME), is very quiet and its pretty sharp. Definitely not as nice as 33mm quality and and nowhere near the amount of bokeh (although its quite decent at 50mm) of course but the flexibility and light weight makes it really nice.
