How to Loom Knit A Dog Sweater!

- Heya, it’s RAYA! It’s all about the dog sweater this week, and this turned out to be an EASY project! Unfortunately, using two strands of yarn instead of one made the project too tight. It didn’t fit my dog because of the lack of stretchiness!
PLEASE don’t use two strands! Also, I would advise making the cuff for the neck area MUCH shorter:) Otherwise, I hope you have fun with this video, and I will be doing a much better/revised version later in my channel!

Have any more pet project ideas? This is the last wk for my pet projects, then I’m moving on to a surprise project that I’m VERY excited to start!

Any questions?⬇️⬇️
Heya, it’s RAYA! I hope you enjoyed this video. One disclaimer: Instead of using 2 strands of yarn, use one strand of super bulky. You can replace the EW stitch with a more closed but elastic stitch such as: the U-wrap, purl, or any other stitch. I still prefer the EW:):)
Thanks! I love how you give details and go slow enough I can follow.
Wow you are an amazing teacher lol my daughter wanted to learn knitting thanks to you I can teach her thank you
Loved to see it on your dog🌷
Aloha Raya! Just wanted to say thanks so much for the tutorial. I really appreciate the pace you went and the details you provided to guide me in successfully completing a sweater for my cat. Great video❣
Would be nice to see your dog modelling your beautiful creation.
Thanks for the pattern! My friend just got a sphinx cat, so I had to try making a sweater for it!
I saved you 😘 I have a 70 lb. Black Female German Shepherd. Going to really take some measurements for the right fit. Thank You For All The Details.
Nice to know the size of the dog your doing at the start of the videos.

Hi really enjoyed this project. My first loom project ever! I did slow the speed down so I could follow you. I used a 24 loom peg. The leg holes where a little difficult for me, turned out rather larger than I hoped but not bad, the braided piece in between was very skinny as I did not double my wool but still turned out to be a great little sweater, hard for me to learn the braided part , I kept having to rewind and rewind lol. I love the cuffed neck. I was asked to make dog sweaters for 2 to 4 pound newborn puppies. Not sure how I would pull this off as they are not even born yet so I cannot take any measurements. People seem to want very tiny sweaters, as I said 2 to four pound pups to give with puppy when it goes to its new home. Your video has helped me learn a new craft, thank you! Any ideas about tiny newborn puppy patterns would be appreciated,
Hello! Thank you for commenting! Here is the link to my revised tutorial on a dog sweater: th-cam.com/video/t-todWDd1jY/w-d-xo.html
It should be much clearer and slower than this version. Also, I added a few things to make the sweater more durable. As far as puppies go, I would suggest using the 24-peg loom, which is one size down from the 31-peg loom seen in my videos. I would be more than happy to work on a tutorial for adjusting the size using one size down too if that’s confusing! All you would do is do half of what I say on a 31-peg Loom like for example: Knit for 8 inches on 31-peg loom, but really Knit for 4 inches on a 24-peg loom! Hope that helps!
What size dog? How would I size it up? For like a pit bull for my sons dog, wanted it to be a surprise
Hello! I’m not sure, there could be some custom loom options online that are larger, but I am not very familiar with them. Or you can make flat panels of the same size and stitch them together based off the measurements of your dog, circumference, etc. hope that helps?
Hi I’m new to your channel. I’m wondering if you have a video on how to stop large gaps between stitches?
Hello! I do not, but I do know that gaps are usually created when lighter yarn is used in conjunction with a “bigger” stitch such as E-wrapping. Doubling up on yarn or using a more closed stitch is your best bet for stopping the wider gaps between stitching as well as making sure you don’t miss any🙃
Working on this for my pitty mix any tips for a very wide chest but smaller ish legs would be helpful:)
Hi! I would recommend using a 41-peg loom which is a size bigger than the one I used in my video. Just follow the same leg directions to keep them consistent🙃
@@rayalightknits6388 thank you :)
Im going to try this.... maybe use the loom one bigger in size and you can still do the e wrap
@DonnaWheeler yep! That’s where I messed up, so if you’re e-wrapping, go with the 36 peg loom. If it’s a big dog you could possibly do the 41-peg:)
Can this be adapted for the small loom?
Absolutely! I would just bring the instructions “down” 2 loom sizes. So everything should be reduced down. I’m not sure exact rows or stitches unless I try doing it and eyeballing it. I can add your question to new videos I’m trying to think about making next year. :)
Excellent tutorial.
How do you keep the braided part from sticking out/poofing out since it's so much longer (and therefore, more material) than the rest of the sweater? This is the problem I keep having. Thanks.
Hi there! I had that issue too when making the sweater, but I ended up sewing it up in a small bunch and hiding it in the fabric. I hope I can find a better alternative to making the space between the legs easier to make and not so weird-looking! Hope that helps
Wish I saw it on a dog can it be made to fit a large dog
Yes it can! I would recommend using a 41-peg loom which is the biggest of the round looms or a custom large loom depending on your dog’s size. My updated dog sweater has a better visual for what it would look like and how it would fit on a dog as well as better instructions and revisions:)
Could I use one strand of yarn instead of double
Yes!
If you want to make a sweater for a medium size dog, what loom should you use? how many pegs?
A large loom would probably work better like the 46-peg loom. If you have a dog that’s almost 100lbs finding a custom sized large loom would be better!
Hi Raya! Awesome tutorial. Question: for the part before the decrease and if you were to use a 36 peg loom how many rows do I knit back and forth? Example: rows 1-9 on the 31 peg loom. Thanks can’t wait to try this pattern
@HannahKristan Hi! So I created a newer revised tutorial on the dog sweater that highlights each area more! I feel that this older tutorial wasn’t as spot on🙂 Try following it on this link⬇️

If that still doesn’t answer your question after trying, feel free to comment again and let me know! I would say off the top of my head you always want to do HALF of what is said on a loom a size bigger than the one you’re working with. For example: A pattern says knit 12 rows on a 41 peg loom, but since the loom knitter is using a 36-peg loom, they will only do 6 rows. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for commenting!
My friend has an apple head white chihuahua. It seems you have a tiny dog too. How many rows do you think for the strap of this little dog? He has short chubby legs.
Great video, thank you, by the way my fur babies name is also Zoe😊
Hi! I want to make this sweater for my cats, who weigh 8.5 pounds and 10 pounds. Will it fit them? Or should I use a smaller loom?
@KatieDunkle Yes, it should fit! I’ve made one for my cats too with minor adjustments. If you would like to see a revised tutorial on making a dog sweater from recently, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/t-todWDd1jY/w-d-xo.html
HI Rayal do you dog sweeter on a 41 peg loom?
Thanks vicki
Yes!
P.s best of all we have same dog breed 😁 so he will have a nice sweater made by his big sister
what size dog does this sweater fit?
@DeniseShaw it would fit a small dog. The stitches were tighter on this pattern, and I plan to do an updated dog sweater where I’m using a better stitch to make it easier to fit:)
It fit my cat so I’d say a small you can always just size up the loom to Make it bigger
Do they make a smaller loom? I was asked to make sweaters for 2-3 pound newborn pups
I’m a beginner, nice to be able to go back, many times, thanks for so many details, beginning to loom I need detailed instructions. I got messed up when making leg holes. When knitting with needles I know how to take a row or two out but with the loom i had to take it all apart. How can I learnwhat is an e wrap
continued” what is an e wrap from the beginning, what is a knit stitch what is a purl, how to decrease ect,,, Thank you for teaching me something new such as looming . I live in northern ontario , Ivy my cockapoo will have many sweaters 😊
@@SocialjusticeFeb21strong I am working on new tutorials describing the stitches you want to learn! Stay subscribed so you don’t miss them!:)
Do you know how many rows in total
Man I hope you live somewhere cold, cause this seems like a REALLY thick dog sweater. We live in Florida and I feel like my poor pup would get overheated in this. Other wise great video.
@JourneyofCreativeMom Lol, sorry this won’t come in handy where you live! Yes, I live where it’s cold and windy, so my dog gets sweaters all the time with her thin coat😁
