    Considering the fact that North Vancouver has some of the most famous mountain bike trails in the world, it's horrendous that the cycling infrastructure is in this state.

    Needs to be a broader shift in culture away from car dependency. This starts with making it more convenient to use active transportation (transit, bike, walking etc) vs traveling by car. Better infrastructure, redesigned city centres, incentives, and road tax for drivers.

      Agreed, there should be a bigger push towards denser, accessible communities. Needing to rely on a vehicle for everything is terrible for independence and moral, as someone who grew up in Winnipeg suburbs. (I dislike the term 'densification' because it tends to have negative connotations, though, so I've been going with 'compact'.)

    They'll spend all the money in the world to make car driving more comfortable but when it comes to bikes and people walking well they're suddenly broke

      @@shauncameron8390of course there is when the infrastructure doesn’t give you any protect from drivers. When you provide protected bike lanes, especially a network of them, usage rates skyrocket.

    There are lots of great destinations on the North Shore but a very disconnected cycling infrastructure; In many locations a bike lane just ends at the busiest section of traffic, with highway on/off ramps and cars in a big rush. Some improvements have been made over the past 5-10 years but still lots of work to do.
    You've got to have your wits about you, be hyper aware, and have a luck on your side to ride around the North Shore. I hope they can find a way to improve things quickly.
    Car traffic is bad and cycling can really speed up ones journey. For example, PM rush you can get from Shipyards to 2nd Narrows and over to Vancouver in probably a 1/3 of the time than by car (maybe even faster when there is a car crash on the route), so making cycling infrastructure a priority can really help provide a faster option and one that can be safer and more environmentally friendly than using a car

    About time! The lack of cycling infrastructure on this continent is atrocious. Even in my Calgary who boasts over 1,000km of paved pathway, there are so many missing links that make any useful trip challenging, so I just ride on the road for anything from getting groceries to getting to my job. I do spend about half my journey to the Saddledome on pathways around downtown. That's super nice!

    Just going to leve this here for people that think more active transport is bad.
    Cyclists cause next to no damage to roads because road ware is exponential to vehicle weight. Also more people cycling is less people becoming obese and being a drain on our medical system. Finally if we have more protection kids seniors will use the paths more giving them more freedom as kids can not drive and for seniors there are quite a lot that can not drive. More cycling and active transport promotes business as cyclists are more likely to stop and buy something then someone in a car this is based of many studies in the Netherlands and other European countries. In short support for more cycling infrastructure will be a bonus rather a negative for government finances and society. I recommend watching channels like Not Just Bikes, Oh the Urbanity and Alan Fisher for more information.

In van, cyclists alway ignore the rule which RCMP "Police campaign targets careless cyclists in Vancouver" - CBC news; based on this Police campaign, we can tell that cyclists put so not only car owners in danger, they are also endanger pedestrians. this need to be stopped. tax cyclists for their irresponsible act

    North Shore has steep hills. How fast can cyclists go down hill ? Bike lanes should be designed for cyclists of all speeds.

    well that's because when we do, we're told "you can be right and be dead / cemetery is full of people with right-of-way"

    "cyclists should pay taxes etc" Yeah, roads are covered by property tax, we pay em just like everybody else
    "cyclists should pay gas tax" maybe we don't pay gas tax but we pay more food tax, energy is energy, NEXT!

      Funny. The city of Toronto considered it 3+ times, going all the way back to the 1900s, and always decided against it, even making an entire page about the reasons on their website for uninformed people to educate themselves about why it is, in fact, a terrible idea.

    It's overdue to consider bike safety anywhere in BC! Cyclists almost never obay road signage, and they don't pay road worthy insurance. As a full time professional driver on our city streets, I see so often the close call to accidents, between other vehicles and pedestrians and cyclists - almost always related to actions from the cyclist. Why must an insured vehicle motorist pay annually to use a roadway and a cyclist pays nothing, yet a cyclist takes full right of way under the laws, and worse they are almost abusive to any driver that gets in their way, because the cyclist is upset to have their speed momentum broken. Justice for all on the road! Let's put an insurance premium on everyone that uses the road!

      Ya sure go ahead expect a 6 year old biking to school or a friends house to pay for insurance, you know how silly you sound. Its like asking people who walk to pay insurance because theyre frequently hit by cars as well

      You can go on and on about cyclists paying insurance but its never going to happen because it makes zero sense. Imagine the bureaucracy involved to license and insure bicycles. For a mode of transport that is healthy for people and the planet that we want to encourage, not discourage. Cars kill people, not bikes.

      I get your point. I'm in L.A. most times and a Vancouverite. In L.A., the bike lanes exacerbates the issue as they made already busy roads WORSE by dedicating bike lanes than only a very few use. When peak hours come (730 am and 5 pm) there's MORE traffic because one lane slows down traffic when that other lane (now a bike lane) can be used. Why are people gonna bend over to the 10% who use those lanes? This is a driver and especially a cyclist problem for not paying attention.

      First off, drivers are using a heavy vehicle that can easily kill someone on impact and people on bicycles do not. Second, are we going to license "walkers" too? Third, google "toronto bike licensing" and read how they considered licensing people 3+ times and always decided against it despite the whiners. Not happening.

      "Almost never *obey" ....let's talk about drivers doing the same. Goes both ways! Plenty of drivers almost hit pedestrians because they don't look both ways (road rule), go through red lights, turn without looking, drive right through when a pedestrian is in the middle of a road with the light still giving them the right away. Its crazy how ignorant your comments on this post are. Its no wonder accidents happen.

      They pay for cars to have their roads repaved year and year again too, even though bikes don't do enough damage to need to have their part of the road repaved so often. Try a bike! You might like it. Plus, if we get more bikes on the road (provided with the safe and proper cycling infrastructure which North America certainly does not have yet) more people will bike, making it so that cars will have less competition to sit in traffic with.

      "They do not obey the laws of the road," yea like most drivers do lol. Plus those "laws" were developed with the safety of vehicle traffic in mind, not cyclists. There are numerous studies of cyclists being safer under the yield rather than stop principle. And besides, if a cyclist doesn't obey the laws of the road, the cyclist is only really putting themselves in danger, whereas if a driver isn't obeying said laws, they're putting everyone and themselves in danger. Also, with the amount of money spent on road maintenance (cyclists pay taxes you know), and how cheap cycle lanes are, I'd say cyclists are "ponying up" enough already. More cycle lanes means more cyclists and less cars on the road, so you don't have to sit in as much traffic in your car. Win win.
