    My husband brought a 552 home from a thrift store today. I didn't know exactly what it was but I had a hunch it was either a Juki or a Janome. THEN I saw that it was Made in Japan and I swear I grinned ear to ear......I knew he hit the jackpot today. $27. Spotless inside. No rust. Beautiful. Eerily clean actually. Not even a piece of cotton lint.

    Looks a bit like the 148 series Kenmores. I love the point blank way you describe things. Keep up the good work, stay well, and have a Happy Turkey!!!

      Thanks for your friendly comments. I do the “point blank” because I’m just supplying information that is helpful (hopefully). I’m not selling anything so there’s no need to spin or sugar coat anything. Besides, my time is too valuable to just ramble on. So is yours. Thanks again.

    I saw one pop up in great condition, well serviced all its life for £30. I’m looking for my first sewing machine on a budget and this looks very promising! Thank you for a great review

      If it’s a local purchase, go grab it. If it has to be shipped, make sure it’s packed carefully so it doesn’t get damaged in transit. If it moves around in the shipping container it will be damaged. Make sure it’s isolated from contact by completely surrounding the machine with tight packaging cushioned materials.

      @@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 it’s local! 5 mins away from me. This is what the seller says:
      This sewing machine has served well. Very heavy and sturdy. Has been fully oiled and is working beautifully.
      This is not a machine for anyone unable to lift a fair amount of weight - I would describe it as ‘industrial strength’. Very sad to part with this faithful servant, but she belonged to my late Mum and I already have 2 machines. Complete with original instruction manual and checked today as working.

    Randy, thank you for the concise and informative review. I found an New Home SS1950 in a very good condition, can it be considered heavy duty enough to sew drapes with buckram? Thanks in advance

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. The only limitation is the size of the thread. Use a polyester thread and it will be strong enough. Cotton wrapped polyester is the best because it has a smooth finish and works best. All purpose/dual duty is best.

      Sure. Just don’t use an oversized thread and it should work out well.

    I was gifted a Janome New home 592 that has been sitting in its sewing table for years. I was contemplating on getting rid of it but watching this video helped me decide to keep and test it. I’ve been looking for videos on how to clean and oil the machine.

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Those machines from that era were virtually clones of each other.
      If you see a video on servicing a lookalike Sears Kenmore, the process will be almost identical.
      Remember this:
      If it slides, hinges, pivots, or rotates, give it some oil.
      Don’t oil the belts, tension assembly, and sparingly oil the ends of the motor shaft.

    Hello, I just bought a machine just like this one from a thrift store. While it runs well, I am unable to get to top right and left knobs to turn more than one click. Do you have any advice or recommendations?

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Make sure that the stitch function selector isn’t in the buttonhole mode.
      If it sat unused for a long time, it will need to be serviced and lubricated.
      As people discover that the older classic machines are superior to the new “plastic fantastics”, (as we say), many are being returned to service.
      Penetrating oil and elbow grease will be your solution.

      I discovered that the slider assembly for the zig zag feature was stuck, i carefully broke it free with a flat head screw driver now it works great.

    I have this machine, I love it but something has gone wrong & I can't get the stitches to lengthen & the needle is not centered. Can you direct me to where I can find how to adjust it myself. I've been sewing for 60 years but have no idea how to adjust except with the buttons on the outside of the machine and there are no sewing machine repair shops near me Thanks in advance.

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If the needle isn’t centered, and the stitches won’t lengthen, it’s most likely set in the buttonhole mode.
      Check your pattern selector dial and be sure it’s set in straight stitch.
      If it is on straight stitch, rotate your pattern selector and free up what may be a stuck selector follower.
      You may even want to lubricate that area if it’s stuck.

      👍 I did have the setting wrong, I found the instructor manual online, but the needle is still not centered. I've seen videos of how to adjust it but not for this machine, the screw doesn't seem to be in the same spot as this machine.
