This is the BEST tinning demonstration on TH-cam, hands down. I came across this video a while back and had to do some serious digging in my history to find it again. Thank you!
Thanks, I just did this a quick tip for a friend. Add some BS with me around the tip tinning part. I’m super surprised how many people have watched this video
I love this because it's fully reliable and requires absolutely no skill or bullshit. I just tried it on my soldering iron and it didn't work at all, which really just confirmed to me that the tip is too old and needs a replacement, but I will try this method again tomorrow.
Tips are a consumable, if it does not work, spend the few dollars and get a new tip. Tips are not intended to last forever. In my shop ever iron that was at a station got a new tip on Friday
I've found myself forced to rewire some of my guitars, and have never really used a soldering iron before. This was great to come across right before I fire up my new soldering iron. Thanks!
Dad bought me a Weller at Radio Shack for my 12th birthday in 1967. The store owner showed us how to tin it and I was on my way. After 50 years of use I bought a new 60 watter and found your video -tried it and it worked just fine. Thanks
This was so helpful. I am retired and getting involved in moldel railroading. So many things to solder in this hobby and I have never used a soldering iron in my life. I read about tinning the tip in my instruction booklet that came with my soldering iron but I didn't know what it meant. Your simple tutorial educated me very quickly. I am not ready to tin my iron and begin using it. Never too old to learn and so glad there are guys like you out there that explain simple things for older guys like me. Great, simple tutorial. Loved it!
After struggling with the stupid flux pen, I watched this video and walked over to my plumbing tools shelf and sure enough the Oatey flux worked first time! Thank you!
It makes it very easy for anyone of any skill level to get a functioning tool to start with. Hard to mess this up. People that are more skilled think this is a joke, but then why are they looking up how to tin an soldering iron :) Thanks for the comment :)
It worked great! I didn't know at first you had to tin them first and messed my first tip luckily there was a replacement on my kit! Your process is the easiest I've found! I made a little mistake of not coiling enough solder and missed a tiny spot but I reckon I could just run tin through it and be done with it. Thanks again man!
I messed up 2 of the 5 tips that came with my soldering iron, before realising I must be doing something wrong.😂😂😂 They both lasted like 2 days each..😅😅😅
Thank you!! I searched and searched for a simple instruction video only to find endless clips aimed at folks with much more experience and, judging by the number of them that expected me to "see" what they were doing from a distant viewpoint, better vision than I have! lol! Anyway, I appreciate the quick, to the point, very instructional video, and thank you for your service, too!!
This looks really good and logical too. As the iron never has any time to get hot while exposed to the elements. It's always covered in flux and solder. It absolutely makes sense.
Nice video dude. I've been playing around with amateur radio for the last few months and finally got my license. Navigating the world of tinning, soldering (types and techniques), equipment application, etc., can be daunting. It was nice to find a quick and informative video explaining tip tinning.
Cheers mate, thanks Edit: I have been looking for an easier way to tin my iron instead of fluxing, rubbing the tip with solder, wiping unwanted residue with a damp sponge and repeating until the tip is fully covered... you deserve my subscription
Ty for your knowledge and experience. I finally broke down and bought a soldering iron. Im definitely going to use this method before my first project. Again, thank you.
Hello my friend. I want to thank you so much for how easy you have made that process for me. Glad I could help, but sanding removes the protective coating on the iron and it is all down hill from this point forwards, just buy a new tip. They are only a few $$

easy to do for beginners and it works. That is the key make it easy for non experts.

and then just keep it clean
Awesome gonna try this
Did it work?
This was some excellent information. I do a lot of soldering and I never knew this. Thank You! Looking forward to more of your soldering tips.
Do not let the Tip oxidize. As the Tip heats up the solder will melt and wet the tip befor it builds up any oxide.
Thanks for your reply! One last question. Can you use 24-6337-8800 instead of 0039?
Yes, it should be fine 63/37 is perfect for electronic work. Thickness of solder is up to your preference. Thinner is good in most cases
Thanks so much!
Best video you have done in a long time. Short, helpful and no adds....
Weekend extra are normal short and not train related.

What is required to melt the solder. I'm just using a plug in weller's iron. 45w to 60w range.

the 1st coat of a new tip before you heat it up is one of the most important. Gives little to no time for the new tip to oxidize.

Just keep it coated after use. you want the solder to keep oxygen/air from touching the tip. the O2 make corrosion the destroys the tip. keep it clean and shinny.
Excellent info.Never seen or heard of this method before. It will now be my standard way of tinning.👌
Thanks, tell that to the military :)
First time I heard of this way of doing it. Cool tip.
It works, been doing it this way for a long long time
Does it matter what kind of flux you use ?
I'm gonna give your method a try in just a few minutes. I'm doubtful...
If the tips is corroded or black, solder will not stick. but you are using a gun, a completely different type of soldering vs a pen or smaller iron.
