It’s fun to see how, on different continents and thousands of kilometres apart, we’ve both figured out how useful UV nail polish can be for spinning. So does UV builder gel. The flyer of the EEW Nano2 is made out of plastic. Before I got rings 3-D printed for the flyer hole, a tiny groove had worn into the flyer hole. I fixed that with builder gel for nails. I now have little rings to fit in the hole to protect it, Dreaming Robots has downloadable files for it on their website. But builder gel or, if you don’t have it, UV nail polish work too.
I’ve also added a drop of gel to the ends of the flyer hooks of my EEW 6.2 to make them less sharp. Now I’m going to colour the hooks with UV polish like you did.
I would like to add that you’re exactly right: you don’t need to follow lessons to become a spinner. I started a year ago. Now I make my own lace weight yarns for knitting and recently made sock yarn for the warmest winter socks out of wool I got from someone who owns sheep. I got the wool for free because they were going to throw it away. I washed it, combed it, and spun it.
100% wool can be expensive and you can’t always get exactly what you want. But if you learn, you can make what you want. Often, buying fibre is less expensive than buying the same weight in yarn.
My work is stressful, and spinning is like meditation. It helps me relax and at the same time I don’t feel guilty because I’m making something useful. The wool becomes yarn, the yarn becomes clothing. Both the yarn and the clothing can also be given away as gifts.
Giving a gift in which you invested time, care and attention adds value, it takes more than just taking out a credit card. I don’t know how it is perceived in Korea, but where I live a handmade gift is often very much appreciated because people realise that.
For anyone considering it, I would recommend giving spinning a try. Like everything, it takes some effort to learn, but it is very rewarding if you already like working with yarn. Like you said: don’t be afraid.
I would also like to add that if people don’t want to buy a lazy kate, an old plastic flower pot with a diameter large enough to fit the bobbin, a weight in the bottom to keep it from sliding, an old knitting needle and some rubber band are all you need for a lazy kate. Or even a cardboard box or a basket instead of a flower pot.
Thank you for your video, I enjoyed watching it. Your yarn turned out beautiful.

Great idea! I have several friends struggling with the Nano orifice cap problem. Sure it is a fun and easy way to deal with it. I think they will also find it useful to apply on the cap.
Here we often make a joke about building a farm and raising sheeps for self-wool supply purpose. Which, will never happen in the middle of this city. Lucky you have that chance for processing the raw wool.

@@Cawool. - I just figured that if UV builder gel can be used to fill the gap when a nail grows (the service is literally called “a fill”) it can be used to fill the tiny groove worn by the friction caused by the yarn. My daughter and I use builder gel on our nails because our natural nails break very easily, so I had it at home. I used a toothpick to place it and baked it. I used the self-levelling kind. It worked! I’ve found builder gel is excellent for all kinds of small fixes. Not just for the Nano, but several other small objects around the house.
If unwashed wool wasn’t so smelly and didn’t get stopped by customs for sanitary reasons, I’d send you some. But you wouldn’t want it in an apartment.
Where I live, people often keep two or three sheep as “lawnmowers with a heartbeat” because they want a large garden but they don’t want to do the work of mowing all that grass. And then, they don’t know what to do with the wool. It gets thrown away or used for soil improvement and that’s sad. Washing raw wool is surprisingly easy.
I hope spinning gets more popular in Korea, and that you and your friends manage to find local sources of wool. Or maybe at least good quality Asian sources that mean less shipping costs.

@@Ram-fz9rf - Ask well ahead of the shearing what they intend to do with the wool, then ask, if they’re throwing it out, if you could have the fleece of their youngest. And perhaps try to find out which breed they are. That’ll give you an indication of how soft the wool will be.
The fleece I got is from a breed called Swifter. The staple length is quite a bit longer than Merino, a lot crimpier, but still quite soft: suitable for socks, sweaters with lots of positive ease and cardigans. It yields very lofty yarn because of how springy it is. But it would be totally unsuitable for felting projects. I’m told it takes dye very well but haven’t tried that yet.
