      2 stalks: one for the turn signal, one for gear selection. The touch screen doesn't always take the "swipe" which gets to be a hassle during parallel parking or 3 point turns. Lastly, why can't they get the damned horn under the airbag?

      Stalk for the indicator is the main issue. Sure America might not have many roundabouts but where you do, the indicator on the wheel is the dumbest idea ever because when you have to indicate off the roundabout you have no idea where the stupid button is because the wheel is turned

    Steering wheel snob here as well. Drove my friend's Model 3 with a yoke for a week and just could not get used to it and one time smacked me in the back of the hand when I went to take over as it was about to hit a curb. Yokes are for aircraft or any transportation method that requires steering with a limited range of motion.
    Fine as long as the driver does not cross arms at end of rotational travel.
    Wheels are for mechanical advantage requirements where multiple orbits may be needed to produce required effort in the steering gear.

    I think you're initial impression about the seating height is correct. I am 5'10 and in most cars I can set the seat quite low and still have an inch of two left before I hit the bottom - like in my Porsche Taycan. Capacitive touch buttons present another problem: you can't operate them with gloves on. So much for driving in cold climates. Tesla should have brought back the stalks with the new steering wheel. The yoke was an ill-advised decision from the start, done mostly in the interest of reducing cost. The yoke looks cool as hell, but is poorly adapted to real-world driving, especially without variable ratio steering.

  • @Skylancer727
    @Skylancer727 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do agree I don't think the yoke is much a safety hazard, I do think that there not being stalks for turning signals is though. I think it just encourages people to use them less as now it takes more effort to find and hit them where with stalks you hit is with a single flick.
    Personally just don't like the yoke though as on longer drives I like to move my hands around to keep my wrists and arms from getting stiff. Plus in city driving I tend to put my right hand on top of the wheel (around 2:00) just before turns to stagger them. That's not really possible with it. I know it's technically a less safe technique, but I find it more comfortable.

    I really like the yoke as it’s great for autopilot resting your hand on the bottom of it. It also makes the car feel more futuristic to me maybe because I grew up watching knight rider. It’s not more ergonomic, but I do like it. I also don’t miss the stalks as I like everything at a simple thumb press distance similar to what you see on Ferrari, minus actual buttons. However the horn needs to be in the middle. Your point about the driving position with the wheel, though definitely seems like a valid one. I never really felt in control of the car with the yoke if that makes sense.

      I tried a Plaid with the joke dial. It was the worst shit I've ever tried. Futuristic? It looks and feels super ridiculous. There is no situation, half a steering wheel is an advantage. On a round steering wheel, you have unlimited possibilities wherever you hold your hand. Lexus has come up with a similar one, but it has variable gear ratio, which is likely to work better. The Joke steering wheel also has lousy quality, the car I drove had not gone far, yet the paint had started to come off on it. Absolutely the most ridiculous and pointless the steering wheel in history. And the fact that it wasn't even possible to choose from the beginning is genuinely stupid.the steering wheel in history. If Tesla had done what Ferrari do, a button on each side, that would probably be a good system. The way they have implemented it on the Model S and X wheel however is not a good implementation. Even though you get used to it, it's not intuitive at all, and you will get confused when ever the wheel/yoke is upside down or something like that. And on the Ferraris it's at you fingertip, you can feel the button, and you don't have to move anything, you just push in with the finger that's already there. In my humble opinion, they ruined the car with that non-sense. Stalks is much easier to use. You never have to think, and that's what a driver need and want. I get the futuristic look and all, but it's like Kyle say, it doesn't add anything, it just takes away from how functional it is. Being able to get a Model S Plaid with steering wheel and stalks might be enough to make a Model S interesting again.

    I switched to the Yoke in my MYP because I have the Hansshow touch screen display, and yes you can see the screen OK through the stock wheel, but touching it to actually make use of the touch screen is a pain in the butt with the stock wheel in the way.

    Thats much more better, this is how it should of came and not with a yoke steering wheel. I don't care if its big in general because I drive a MINI Countryman Exclusive PHEV and it has a big steering wheel which doesn't bother me but I feel as if this is more safer now and more better than the yoke. 😊

    Hey Kyle. Just picked up a model X long range in ultra red. Wonder if the new Model 3 wheels can be retrofitted to the S and X. The horn placement is bothersome. I can live with the signal lights although I think the left signal should remain on left side but the right should have been placed on the right side of wheel

    About the airbag, I think why they left it to you, but in the center of the new wheel :) If you look at your video at 15:24 you can see there is no airbag in the new one that is still wrapped... Probably similar to the aftermarket steering wheel for Model 3 and Y where you transfer the airbag from the old one to the new one.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wheel comes without the airbag installed, otherwise the tech would have to remove it again, on site, to install the wheel. Much easier, safer and faster to not pre-install it.

    The only solution is the retrofit of the model 3 steering wheel with stalks. Those touch buttons are useless . Also the diameter appears to be quite big. I am waiting for some company to produce the module needed for the retrofit of a model 3 steering wheel with stalks on a Model S . I want to upgrade from my M3P'22 to Plaid , but the joke or the wheel with touch is a deal breaker. Please reply if you have info on the module needed .

    THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!! I knew they had to someday give this option. This was my only gripe about not purchasing the Model S. I really hated the Yoke Steering and how it performed!!! The button turn signals is probably something I will have to deal with. Tesla should of kept sh*t the way it is.

    Like! Still looks weird to me with the wheel, but maybe in time, it will be more normal. The yoke used to look weird to me, but now looks modern and fitting. We're sticking with our yoke for now. It's totally fine. But if the car had come with a wheel, we wouldn't have known better.

      May look more 'boring', but it's 100x more practical and useful than the spinning wrist-breaker rectangle of death. Drove both and there's no comparison. There's a reason cars have had round steering wheels for over a century. Because they work the best. Other steering methods have been tried before many times, even a joystick, but ultimately, the steering wheel wins out every time because it's the most ergonomic, intuitive and practical. The yoke is just change for the sake of change and a weak attempt to be different. Owners who have a Tesla with a yoke hate it so much that as soon as Tesla started to offer the round wheel retrofit, it immediately sold out in their online store. That should tell you something.

  • @DblOSmith
    @DblOSmith ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yoke is not a smart idea. It's unsafe for turning, it's unnecessarily difficult and weird for stalkless turn signals... However, I applaud Tesla for pushing boundaries and trying to be innovative, AND I can also understand why it seems like Tesla created a problem and sold us the solution. I don't think that's actually the case because the replacement wheel/install cost is extremely reasonable. I thought about replacing my MYP wheel and it starts at $1,600 without install.
