The box being made of plastic needs that added metal plate to stiffen the structure to reduce vibration and resonance to produce cleaner bass. Some high end home speaker baffles are actually made of all metal or thick alloy for the same purpose. Those Doss engineers truly are knowledgeable on sound acoustic by adding those metal plates. Also, sealing the mid/high drivers from the subwoofer is an expert move because it eliminates distortion on the midrange that can occur with the air pressure from the sub. This details made me appreciate more on the built quality of the XL. Most bluetooth speakers, even the expensive ones won't go this far to produce better sound.
The mass is not a white van scam thing in the doss. It’s added to provide mass damping and improve the midrange. I’m quite impressed by doss that they would include this. Usually, other speakers would have a heavy enough speaker magnets, or heavy enough enclosure to dampen, but someone knew the doss needed the extra weight.
Not only that but a lot of masses in bluetooth speakers are used as a counterweight to balance the speaker from the weight of the battery, stopping one side being heavier/making it less stable.
I don't think that the added weight is to make it feel heavier. I think its there to help the speaker not move around as much because of the vibrations from the woofer on higher volumes. Because I saw in some other video someone did on the speaker, that when he turned up the volume the speaker literally started to move around on the table it sat on.
The metal plate does many things, stop some distortion etc but also counterweight the battery mass otherwise it would be heavy to one side and surprisingly easy to drop if picked up from centre.
Fill the inside with synthetic cotton? It always adds bass to smaller worser speakers like these. Always adds some more oomph to them too. Plus with any problems with the air leaking can be fixed with this. That's how I engaged the passive radiators on my DIY speaker when I noticed that I had too many air leaks to fix.
One of the best Bluetooth speakers that I've heard or owned...now for the issue. I left it plugged in for a few weeks and since that the battery life is down to a few hours and the speaker keeps cycling off and on if plugged in. Would it be possible that the battery is not lithium??? Or that keeping it plugged in has caused a problem??
I have the same problem with mine, since I brought my XL to our shop, the power plug never pulled off the wall socket for more than a year now. And our shop is 24/7 open, anyone can just connect to it. I'm actually watching this hoping to get an idea what type of replacement battery do I need to buy and how'd I do it. 😁
Try reset insert paper clip at the back. Always helped me but I have left it in for the third time haha I make be out of look now try it out. This method alwahs worked for me in that past. Support told me this method. Small hole next to the charging port.
I had one of these speakers fall out of my car while I had a car accident which ended with me being upside down. Luckily I was fine and I found the speaker on the ground in the snow. It had a badly bent grille, which I kind of bent back, and it was also leaking (and huffing) air. I was able to fix the issue by bending the steel frame of the radiators straight again, this way there was no air gap from the radiators to the screws inbetween the mounting screws. Otherwise it still works fine to this day.
I've never been too impressed by mine, the bass is weak but I never did anything about it. Thanks for showing disassembly on this! Woofer returned to resting position within a second! Took the grille off and found a couple of loose screws, then I put a piece of tape over the back input/power/memcard section. It looks like that's where all the air is leaking from. If I loosen up the tape a little it puffs with any push of the speaker. Hate to take it apart and risk making things worse but your video has made it easier. While I'm in there I may put some better batteries in. Is it 2x18650 in series? Thanks for the vid! edit: I dribbled hot glue all over and around the input/memcard housing and there is an improvement in the cabinet leak. It still leaks down when pushing on radiators but the time to equilibrium is reduced. Going to try some dry-ice fog to see if I can find more.
Is it possible to replace the battery by doing this? Mine all of the sudden stopped turning on this morning and the charge light in the back doesn't indicate charging. The red light does, however, blink when I hold down the power button while the charger is in, so I have no idea what that indicates. Thanks
Thanks for the Video. Now I know how to get inside the Doss. My Doss won't hold a charge anymore. Wondering what I can do? If you have any tips about replacing the battery or doing something else let me know.
The metal could be a counter-weight for the weight of the speaker but if it is mint for sound damping they would of been better off using sound damping material like second skin like in car audio
I added some weight so it doesn't move around at low volume best sounding Bluetooth speaker I own . Btw look at the screw holes in the front I had some slight air leak because one screw wasn't tight enough or it could be the charging port area in the back that came a little loose when yours fell down .
Hey I have a problem with my speaker same one as this for some reason when I pop it on charge the red indicator comes on but then goes off but when I try to turn it on nothing happens
I had two of these (one provided free of charge by the manufacturer due to a problem with the first). After putting up with problems for over a year I threw both of them in the trash this week, having removed the LiPo batteries for re-use in something else. What a waste of money and time this item was.
Looks like dual 18650 lithium batteries, very common, used in vape box mods, can get these online easy. My batteries no longer charge, I'm planning on replacing. I removed all 12 screws and was stopped by not being able to remove the front speaker panel from the case, this video confirmed it is possible. I wish he had taken a good video of the interior of the box and the battery area, no such videos exist that I know of.
@@StuBotNYC thank you for your response. It was very helpful I m sure for the community. But do tell me after the repair if these are the specific batteries as in the certain parts of world vaping is not a trend and getting any other info would be very helpful. 👍
I took it apart, I uploaded it, too. I got a lot of hate because "I didn't know what I was doing." I thought the speaker was busted completely so I really didn't care.
So i've opened up my speaker and after assembling it, the subwoofer sounds distorted and the passive radiators dont seem to work. How do I assemble it properly?
i have a bluetooth spaker with an air leak i was unscrewing it and I lost controll of the screwdriver and poked s hole in the dustcap good thing have a spare
I bought one 2 weeks ago from Amazon India which will take another full week to arrive. After seeing this video and another one, I am s**tting bricks... In the other video this dude had one that he was going to return, because 1. It had a rattle when bass and volume went up and 2. When on and not playing, when he turned up the volume, there was a deafeningly loud hum! Could someone here please tell me if his was a faulty piece or if they come like that?! The speaker is only $70 today but I paid $165, that's India, shipping, duties etc so I'm worried. Amazon here may not accept returns on imported stuff. Thanks in advance,
Yo I have one of these and my amp has broke and the charge circuit on it has burned like it actually had a flame anyone know of a replacement amp for one of these speakers
Just maybe it's there for a reason. Duh! This thing is powerful. Maybe it's there to keep it from moving allover your table or wherever you out it. Seriously man. Poor analysis. If you were designing a powerful speaker like this. You would make sure it doesn't fly around. Thank you
I am very curious how hard it is to change the battery in these? I had a JBL bluetooth speaker which had a battery that was virtually impossible to change, and when I did finally get it in, it was definitely impossible to get the speaker back together correctly! Thanks! CC

It's also needed to balance the battery weight.

that would have been EXO's vid. yeah that thing can walk off any surface really
yeah, it was haha
The weight is so that the speaker doesnt dance around during loud playback !!! So it not unnecessary
It’s still so powerful that would be good songs with a nice bass still makes a move around
The metal plate does many things, stop some distortion etc but also counterweight the battery mass otherwise it would be heavy to one side and surprisingly easy to drop if picked up from centre.

7:14 Maybe it prevents resonance sounds of the plastic box. Car platforms are constructed with silentblocks + dummy weights intentionally too.

The metal plate in my opinion is for strengthening the structure to reduce vibration of the box. It should improve sound quality if only a little.
Took mine apart and noticed that two edges on the sub were bowed up, a quick bend back and it was as good as new!
Phone camera looks fine to me mate. No complaints on my end!
Check the seals on the passive radiators they might be the cause

You can try stuffing it with polyfill it will sound amazing.
Wanted to repair the charger port, what’s the best way?
Have you any idea ? My DOSS Soundbox XL plays no more bass. The bass is inactive, don't know what i can do. Hopy you can help.
is it possible the weight could help keep the speaker from vibrating off of a shelf?
Apply that silicone or anykind of sealant to screw holes, and to other holes as well where you suspect it leaks next time you open it :)
Good stuff, Jack. Well done on rectifying the issue. Looking forward to future content.
I think the weight is to keep it from moving around when it is turned up
no, this weights aren't unnesscesary! The Box have to be heavy because of resonance reasons. So dont remove them. It will decrease the powerful sound.

I want to do the same thing mate, but l keep reading about how the air tight can get messed up if opened

1 woofer and 2 passive radiators... Thats very extreme bass bro...
As far as I'm aware a passive radiator needs to be around twice the surface area of your bass driver. So this seems about right.
@Orlando Simpson No only 1 and 2 passive radiators.
Which amplifier chip it uses? (TPA3116 maybe?)
the air comes out from the subwoofer accually i tried to seal the sub but there was still air coming out from there
I love this video EDIT or the metal could be so it doesn't fall over easy
