Yes, he did save our main character Atsushi, and that gives off a good impression of him at first, but seriously.
Dazai is a child abuser. And I know, he has been abused too, and the person he abused also abused someone, and it's not entirely his fault and all, BUT, he was literally the youngest executive in the Port Mafia, and he has to have 100+ IQ, I think. He's extremely smart. And I'm not blaming him for continuing the cycle, but he should've known better, honestly. AND I'M NOT DISMISSING HIS TRAUMA. I understand that it was extremely hard for him, but why?? Also, even after he just told Akutagawa that he (Akutagawa) has become strong, he still does NOT give a shit about Aku. How? Because Akutagawa "dying" in season 5 was most likely under his calculations. He KNEW Akutagawa would follow his orders, and he (Aku) would "die". Why and how? It's obvious. As I said earlier, he has 100+ IQ, and he can predict almost everything, and that was proven from the anime/manga itself. He didn't care about Akutagawa and what would happen to him, he never did. Akutagawa "dying" was part of his plan, to protect ATSUSHI, a totally different person.
Speaking about Atsushi and this situation... This is terrible for Atsushi too. MANY people dismiss this scene. Atsushi already has a savior complex- he feels the need to save everyone, and most especially, feels EXTREMELY guilty when he thinks "it's his fault". Put yourself in Atsushi's shoes, you just saw your partner for a long time "die" in front of you.
Now put yourself in AKUTAGAWA'S shoes. I'm changing the topic now. For Akutagawa, his head getting cut off was really painful. Again, people often dismiss that fact. Getting your head cut off is very, very, painful and it causes you to get a ton of blood loss. "He didn't die!" THAT'S NOT THE POINT HERE. What I'm trying to say is, it's true that he survived, but the pain throughout that was really... You know.
Enough with his relationship with Akutagawa, we need to talk about him and CHUUYA, the very person everyone ships him with.
Okay, what's wrong with Soukoku? Everything. I don't think many people realize it, but it's extremely toxic. Dazai had FORCED Chuuya to join a terrible organization, being the MAFIA. He had forced Chuuya to, by making his friends and practically family, to think he's betraying them, and then literally stab him. And just a few years pass by, he literally just... left Chuuya, in the Port Mafia. He had brought Chuuya to that violent crime organization, and now he's just going to leave Chuuya? Chuuya had already began trusting Dazai a lot, and just to get left again.
Changing topics once again, people often think Dazai is a really interesting character... But, that's not it. He's boring. That's it. How? They make his character over complicated, and him saying sorry to Akutagawa just... Ends all the "investigation". Asagiri made that scene only to make the fans stop analyzing Dazai. Because really, Dazai is a boring character, there's nothing really interesting about him, if you think about it. It's just too over complicated.
About season 1 Dazai, he's still terrible. I mean the first episodes, starting from episode 1. I never liked him. They kept making "sewer slide" a joke and not taking it seriously... With Dazai.
Conclusion: He's a terrible person and character. He always was.
