Yeah it sounds like he wishes someone had warned him about the lifestyle but he probably would not have listened either. The remix just accentuates how people don't really listen to the lyrics and meaning just the beat telling them it's positive or negative. I think the life is a bit glorified too but if you are a singer or musician than that's what you do just if you are a cobbler you fix shoes. Most don't even notice the Bob Dylan reference of the video either listen to all his sad songs but hey he's a Nobel prize winner I doubt Mike ever will be that.

This song is so much more meaningful when it's like this. The faster remix seems to glorify a life of risks and drugs and being rich and famous at a cost and not caring about how it affects yourself and others, but this just shows so many more emotions and regrets behind the decisions made and makes it seem like he actually cares vs the remix

I like both versions of this song to be honest. They both make you experience a different part of the story that’s being told in this. The remix is the “star” in this song pretending to be happy for his fans and him getting intoxicated to hide and temporarily get rid of his pain, and this version shows how he really feels inside.

Spot on. Lyrical music has a message, remixes do not. That's all EDM music for you. Completely unauthentic, and it just plays on people's heart rate by using scientifically studied sound waves that people are bound to enjoy, then they mix it up over and over again and call it a new song. Anyone who has spent any time as a performer will understand the deep subtext in this song. The thrill of the crowd, the isolation that comes from people loving the perception of you but never knowing you as a real person, the havoc that the ‘life’ plays on you in physical, romantic, even spiritual terms. I’m thankful I got out of it when I did. People think that success in music is so desirable but trust me, when you actually get there it does some really crazy things to your head. This is the REAL song. AND it shows what many artists actually go through instead of them making it all look like it's the sweet life. Funny how the seeb version that's on the radio leaves out the last verse.
I expected to read comments about how emotional this song is and people talking about the story behind the lyrics but everyone's talking either about him licking his finger or the man on the background
When I read about Avicii's suicide I had this song in mind at once. How he starts by singing "I took a pill in Ibiza, to show Avicii I was cool", followed by things that depress the protagonist of this song. Avicii must have felt very bad, too, as all the people who suffer feom such a bad depression. My heart goes out to all the people who feel helpless, sad and tired to the bones. May you find a little light in your soul, that makes you holding on, keep on trying. May you find peace an joy and love in your life.
Mike Posner, this is why this song is so unique. A pop star singing about how he regrets things about being in the mainstream pop music culture. Many people don't realize what stardom entails... Being famous is both a blessing and a curse. Just because you're rich and famous, does not mean you won't be lonely or feel happy. Ironically, worldwide recognition can make you feel alone. Bravo sir. Genius.
This is a very deep and sad song with lots of messages in it, especially the last part which doesn't exist in the remix version. But as always people here seems like don't get it with the pursuit of being funny with stupid comments. We are just consuming, without thinking deep about anything. This song reminds me the quote of Jim Carrey which says: "I wish everyone could get rich and famous and have everything they ever dreamed of so they would know that's not the answer."
Better than the Remix. The remix makes it more upbeat and sound happier but to me this shows off his voice and emotions more on a song that is written very sadly. Great job Mike cannot wait for more!
This was the song that made me fall in love with Mike's music. I still remember listening to the remix on the radio back in 2017 and was intrigued by the lyrics enough to search up the artist. I fell into a rabbit hole of his music and artistry and have been a huge fan ever since. I got to meet him after his concert, and he was so kind to everyone at the meet & greet there. I'm hoping I can see him live again soon.
@@StickyRig I mean, I was thinking that, too -- but the entire time he didn't do that, until right when the guy passed by, and he quickly pulled his offer back.
Imagine how many times you were like one of these people walking by. Just going about your day, seeing someone as talented in the streets and not even knowing it. Definitely happens in big cities all the time. This dude is a genius songwriter
I used to live in NYC for many years, and I was always very quick to notice famous people, except for 2 times that go down as 2 of my most shameful behavior moments. When I was in my 20s, I was a big party boy who took "Ibiza pills" a lot also. There was (is?) a yearly event in NYC called "Night of 1,000 Stevies" ... a huge club event honoring the great Stevie Nicks. Guys and women dress in various "Stevie" looks. Others have some sort of Stevie representation.. such as a concert T-shirt, tambourine, whatever.. All night her music is played. So this one time my boyfriend and I were squeezing through a very tight crowd to get to the bar and this one woman who was brushing by me was very blonde, short, and small, and looked more like Deborah Harry than Stevie Nicks. Since I was very liquored up and other stuff... I turned back to my boyfriend who was right behind me and said very loudly, pretty much right in the blonde lady's ear "This is a night of 1,000 Stevies! Not Deborah Harrys!" My boyfriend grabbed me, pulled me against him, and said in my ear, "That IS Deborah Harry!" ...oops. He wouldn't let me go apologize to her. The second time was worse.. I was a crew person on independent films for a few years, and film crew people all know one another after working on several films, so it's like a huge extended family. Pretty much everyone gets along very well unlike just about any other job in the world. So about 3 or 4 days in to a film I was working on, I walked up to the craft service table and a small woman was just standing right in front of it staring and not doing anything. She looked about 20 years old or so from behind. I assumed I knew who she was so I jokingly said, "Are you just going to stand there all day or are you going to get something?" Well, she turned around and it was Cindy Lauper. I wanted to cry. She immediately said, "Oh I"m so sorry!" I don't think I have ever apologized so much in my life. She was so damn sweet and SHE felt bad. I kept telling her I thought she was someone I knew and I was just joking. She was starring in the film but she hadn't been on set until that day so I handn't seen her yet, and I certainly didn't expect her to be haning out at the craft service table. Turns out she was extremely down to earth and had no diva attitude at all. To this day, almost 25 years later, I still feel horrible about it. The woman is truly an amazing soul. Not just talented, but kind, caring, and a true humanitarian. I'm sure Deborah Harry is nice too, but my boyfriend wouldn't let me find out. 🙃
I saw your Instagram post recently about this song. So glad you are in a better place, Mike. I listen to this song happily knowing you made it through this season of your life and are now thriving. That's the good stuff
+Dzakira Qaula Fashla this... both are 🔥🔥🔥 and the remix is fitting and the one you listen to when you really just dropped an xpill...this one is dope too tho.
It's almost bothersome how many will never understand this song in its essence. I love the seeb remix myself, the production is amazing. But what ever happened to real artistry? I don't mean to demean people who appreciate the remix of this song or any version of it... The majority will never see this or even understand the the lyrics of the remix. Stay blessed my friends.
+Alex Dkbrst every comment will be trite if you decide not to analyze it in a way that incorporates the opinion of the person who posted it. You're on a media hosting server that's accessed daily by millions of people on a daily basis yet you have made a decision to generalize my comment as some kind of pandering and attention seeking statement. Analyze yourself, calm yourself, and try again.
+Alex Dkbrst ... Not to mention, if anything is "trite" it's your very own comment to try and expose a quality that doesn't legitimately exist through my intentions in the original comment. You are vastly worse than a troll or the typical user whom may come across a popular song like this, you are one of the many that has decided you are better than the group described and choose to try and boost your own ego through false criticism.
+Danielle Lawson Yeah, it's sad cause I was focused on the words the whole time. Came down to the comments and saw everyone complaining about how he kept licking his thumb before skipping each page ._.
I think the remix is more meaningful because it reflects more of what his current career is like. He knows that he's irrelevant but he still has to write music for other people that is like that. In the remix it shows that he's stuck if he wants to stay relevant while the original seems very generic for its type of music. (This is all in my opinion though..)
I like his writing, i feel if he didn't fail after his first few singles we wouldn't have who he's become now. It's made him an amazing artist and humbled him into incredible writing.
My girlfriend still loves this song to this day. Amazing motivation for her and she’s even more awesome because she wakes up and listens to this every morning!
Things are good untils she keeps waking up. But once she stops doing it, things will turn way worse. Cherish what you still have until you no longer have it.
ik right I feel for him in this version the other one I want to start pumping my fist and dance to it but in this one you can actually see his pain in the song he is writing
You really understand the lyrics and can get a feel for his pain a lot more than the remix. Makes me a little sad when I hear the original, but it's really a great song that should have more fame (the original, not the remix)
False. Seeb wasn't in control over the music video or public's reaction to it. He said it himself in multiple interviews that he wanted the message to be the same as Mike's original message but with an EDM tone. That's why the remix is still a sad themed & sounding song. The public then turned it into a party song blasted at night clubs.
There's something to be said for the pain in music. How you relate and respond. Its almost like its the most relatable. So many will never pop bottles or have a bentley but we all know sad songs. We've all had our heart ripped out and wonder will good news ever actually come. I love songs like this because I can feel it. Thank you Mr Posner.
I Still prefer this version of the song, i Feel the emotion in it, it exposes in its melody, the singing and all what the lyrics are to say. Not that the remix is not good but for the so strong the lyrics are, its nice like this, you can even cry if necessary..... Creepy things you know
I actually heard this version first then the remix but I just watched mike on the impaulsive podcast and fuck man I came back to watch this with way more perspective and it’s amazing to see how vulnerable he was then and how much he was grown can’t wait for the next smash hit we all know it’s coming eventually
I always thought this was a party song. Ever since I found this version, I've never heard the song the same again. Crazy how the beat makes that big of a difference from it being a super sad song to being a club party hit
I think it's sad that the original isn't as popular as the remix. Don't get me wrong the remix is enjoyable. But the original is so much better. The original really allows the lyrics to shine through while the remix puts its main focus on the music and beats.
I prefer the remix, because I don't feel like the lyrics are good enough to be the main focus on the song and to highlight the sadness in it. The remix makes the focus more 50/50 on the music and lyrics which suits the quality of the lyrics better imho, and since the lyrics don't sound saddening enough to me the focus on the effect of the intoxication is better in my eyes.
That part where he basically tells those boys: "You dream of being like me? I don't want to be like me." is not in the remix. Maybe that is for the better.
It takes a lot of strength and honesty to talk about this. Our families, other people and the media brainwash us to think that we want to be rich, popular, to own a yacht and drive sports cars. But those aren't actually our dreams...

And I spend it on girls and shoes
But you don't wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don't ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don't wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don't wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs
I'm just a singer who already blew his shot
I get along with old timers
'Cause my name's a reminder of a pop song people forgot
And I can't keep a girl, no
'Cause as soon as the sun comes up
I cut 'em all loose and work's my excuse
But the truth is I can't open up
Now you don't wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don't ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don't wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don't wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs
I took a plane to my home town
I brought my pride and my guitar
All my friends are all gone but there's manicured lawns
And the people still think I'm a star
I walked around downtown
I met some fans on Lafayette
They said tell us how to make it 'cause we're getting real impatient
So I looked 'em in the eye and said
You don't wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don't ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don't wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don't wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all that I know are sad songs, sad songs

This is the REAL song. AND it shows what many artists actually go through instead of them making it all look like it's the sweet life. Funny how the seeb version that's on the radio leaves out the last verse.

I expected to read comments about how emotional this song is and people talking about the story behind the lyrics but everyone's talking either about him licking his finger or the man on the background
just shows you how shallow people are now a days
thats exactly what i expected
cause its extremely annoying and keeps away your attention from lyrics. Is it really so hard to take paper without licking finger everytime?
Maybe his hands were super dry xD
song not so good , i like seeb remix much more, but lyrics are really great.
WAIT HE KILLED HIMSELF?
Yes
No
He was really sick
+Advait Rai Dude, he slashed himself with glass from a broken wine bottle. He committed suicide.
This song reminds me the quote of Jim Carrey which says:
"I wish everyone could get rich and famous and have everything they ever dreamed of so they would know that's not the answer."
so True ...
I know rightt
So True!!
I know. Lots of songs these days are way too shallow. :(
Great quote. So true.
People really need to listen to this version before the dance remix, it's actually a really beautiful song :)

I don't get the meaning, can someone tell me it?
+Narsis Sangsefidi Its about drugs and what they do to You
Better than the Remix. The remix makes it more upbeat and sound happier but to me this shows off his voice and emotions more on a song that is written very sadly. Great job Mike cannot wait for more!
+KiLLUrShelves Agreed.
But it's not supposed to be happy, it's a pretty sad song. The remix is ironic though.
+Dale Hart I agree so much
+Dale Hart That's why I prefer the remix. The contrast really brings out the message.
+KiLLUrShelves but it doesn't make it sound happier, it makes it sound like you are on drugs. It creates atmosphere of a wasteful life.
The guy behind the wall is a king. He dropped the crown but he didn't want to pick it up cause it will interrupted the shooting

Hello South Africa…. Hope you have a good day!
Imagine meeting this guy downtown on Lafayette and you ask for an autograph and he just looks you in eyes and sings the entire choros.
That's hilarious
😂
as funny as that is, its also what id prefer more fora memory. a autograph is cool, but that would be basically a small personla concert and way doper
1:08 that man was like - oops are they recording....?

2:14 ARE THEY DONE YET?!

the remix is awesome.
this is the seed of said awesomeness.
I know right. I personally like the original better. I think It's a really nice and meaningful song.
you speak the truth...

The meaning of this song is the exact opposite of what the remix is
exactly the remix is shit and the video is nonsense
No it’s not, it’s showing that he’s trying to fit in but he’s sad
Definitely! I am so love this song and so happy that the song become popular now. But the remix... that is not really i want to see...
Not really . I think its just how the public perceives it . But i think its the same but just in different tone
I Still prefer this version of the song,
i Feel the emotion in it, it exposes in its melody, the singing and all what the lyrics are to say.
Not that the remix is not good but for the so strong the lyrics are, its nice like this, you can even cry if necessary..... Creepy things you know

what
I think it's sad that the original isn't as popular as the remix.
Me encanta susu cansiones de i took apil

The remix is great but I love this original version. It deserves some radio play.

McLovin They would have to speed it up in order for that to happen, and the songs too old for radio play now.
McLovin nahh chill

That part where he basically tells those boys: "You dream of being like me? I don't want to be like me." is not in the remix. Maybe that is for the better.
It takes a lot of strength and honesty to talk about this.
Our families, other people and the media brainwash us to think that we want to be rich, popular, to own a yacht and drive sports cars. But those aren't actually our dreams...
