    Weirdly Ive found cheap old Rovers to be wildly popular...it cant all be reminiscence or they'd be as valuable as old Fords, and people would have bought them new...
    Mk3 Cav was the last, best Vauxhall, Id love one too

    • @musmodtos
      @musmodtos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I took a mk3 Cavalier to the wrong side of 300,000 miles and it was pretty much still solid. Admittedly mine was the gorgeous old Isuzu diesel but it still fired every morning, worn out but still ran.
      Shocked how much Cav's can be worth now.
      I'd say it's not something I'd own again but I have a Saab 9-3 parked on the drive and that shares a good deal of heritage.
      The Saab spin on it is much better built though, although has equally mediocre driving dynamics.

    I wonder if that has actually gone through from the inside as a result of the leaking sunroof? No corrosion protection in the box sections or pillars.

    This car must of have been stored in a moisture ridden environment. These cars were known for rusting but I've never seen them rot under the door seals. It's a shame it couldn't be fix. Hope the next owner will take care of that issue. The Rover has and will be my favorite car on this channel. TWC and Elly are amazing but the Rover 800/Sterling 825/827 have a personality and style that is paramount to other cars.

    Father was a panel beater for nearly 40 years and he's always had a disliking for Rover's thanks to how they rot. It's always funny the cars he hates often originates from how much of pain they were to work on (and how much bonus he lost out on!)

    My heart sunk for you when you peeled that door seal off, and as it got further, more and worse appeared. I totally shared your disappointment because I've been there.
    A life time (35 of my 53 years) of owning Italian stuff wasn't the cause of it however. My Fiat's, Alfas and Lancias have shown their rot like a badge of honour. It's been British stuff that's kept it so well hidden, and that my friend is even worse. Plastic and rubber trims coming off with lumps of rotten metal attached is an awful feeling.
    Glad you managed to ship it on, hope you didn't lose too much on it and hopefully it'll go on to be repaired and survive.
    Dealer plates, bought from SGL (a garage I knew), poverty spec and a bonny car to the eye. Surely that's enough reason to save her?

    Putting work into a 2CV can be justified, because their appeal translates into pretty decent value. Discovering terminal rot in that Rover is like knocking over and breaking your favourite beer glass, full some great beer....... but a bit less annoying....... or spilling black oil or your favourite Tee-Shirt.

    Here in Texas due to the dry warm climate our government does not spread metal eating sodium chloride on our roads. that rover is only around 30 years old and it's rotten. I think British cars are awesome quirky cars it's ashame to see so many of them end up as sweetcorn cans :(

    • @garethonthetube
      @garethonthetube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most cars don't make it to 30 years in the UK for that very reason, But to rust there is a bit unusual, They normally go from underneath.

    • @Rob-eg8qc
      @Rob-eg8qc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garethonthetube you say underneath I can see why it does. I would say one of the reasons why it has rust on the top door seals is maybe the car had being wash with soap dish liquid because that stuff is loaded with salt. The sun here does distroy and cracks interiors of cars and on older cars it fades the paint.

    • @person.X.
      @person.X. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh dear... I'd strip it for parts and send the shell for scrap if that were mine. Not worth fixing that. I think the best this car can hope for is that someone bodge repairs it with rust converter and filler, which would arguably be a bit unsafe, but to do it all properly would cost far too much. Unless you sold it to a fabricator.
    Thank God you managed to get rid of it.

    Well, in America British cars have disappeared almost completely. Jaguars and Land Rovers are considered to be among the very worst. I have just parted with my 20 year old Saab 9-5 . The body was in excellent condition but at 145,000 miles the engine and components were just one problem after another and little reliability. We don't import any French cars either.
    Mercedes and BMW are now made domestically in the South but are very expensive to own and maintain.

    It would take a full restoration, sand blast and welding new panels to get this back together. With a full respray she would be amazing. You win some you lose some. Try buying a decent looking Alfasud that on the drive home had the odd trait of moving the bonnet under acceleration, seems I missed the fact that the engine was the only thing attaching the bodywork forward of the strut towers . . How I laughed . Or my poor uncle whose mk2 cortina failed the MOT on front struts, how proud he was once the garage fitted nice new ones and an MOT was obtained, see him slightly miffed when the new struts now punched their way through the inner wings and tried to escape by pushing the bonnet up . . . Rust, you just have to learn to love it.

Restored the undercarriage of my mini not long ago and it took me a month! No way that Rover is worth the time, patience and effort to get it solid again. Hopefully, the bloke that bought it is a die hard 800 enthusiast! Otherwise is it a great parts car! The new place that you are renting has loads of potential! Indeed. I bought a very cheap P80 Volvo V70 a couple months ago, partly because I needed the cargo space and partly because this happened to be on sale nearby, and it has definitely grown on me. I pulled out the drooping door weatherstrips (an excercise far less dramatic than the one in this video) and reattached them with some two-sided tape, and also swapped the tired motor mounts, but that's it. It's a rust-free and trouble-free 22-year old car, and I still see a LOT of them on the roads now that I've started paying attention.

    I got burnt by a 1990 mercedes w124. Absolutely immaculate inside but rotten in places. And the more I looked into the more I found. So I decided to cut my losses as I'm not a welder.

    It's not that bad , just needs a roof skin and new door seal channels , easily rectified with a bit of welding. I would buy it if I had space but say good bye to the 2.0 lire though , probably I would convert to V6 Honda engine once welding new panels in and body work is done.

    If you want something to fill that space Ive a 1998 R Diesel 306 estate with MOT going cheap. Proper hub nut car too lol.

      Thanks, but I've already ticked the 306 box. Had a D Turbo for over two years! An amazing length of time for me.

    I guess the previous owner shouldn't have parked the Rover underneath a waterfall...
    Seeing you uncover all that crap underneath the door-seal made me cringe... such a shame about a car that looked pretty promising, considering its age.
    EDIT: How about a Mk II Golf or Jetta? Unless you want a GTI/16V, those should be pretty cheap still and you should be able to pick them up for peanuts. The Golf (and I guess the Jetta too) were notorious for overdone sealant-treatment from the factory. VW squirted so much of the stuff into the body that it would regularly seep out of certain spots. Over here in Germany, there are still plenty of Mk IIs on the road as everyday cars. And most of them look amazingly preserved, even the ones that weren't pampered/kept in a garage.

    The new owner's house is probably called "Dun'Rovin". Weld on a whole new roof? If there is a rust free one out there that is.
    NZ is a bit of old car heaven, especially for old Brits so I hope that goes well. Hopefully, you will also get to explore Japan too. If you're going to do a lot of flying, have a look here. It has been started by YT team of Kara and Nate, check them out, who try and get the best deals for their World travels.

      Door seal design doesn't help...

    • @frothe42
      @frothe42 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And no garage does not help, especially since you live in a damp part of the UK 🇬🇧, albeit beautiful part. Somehow moisture got under the rubber gaskets, and since it could not dry out, the rot started. The rest of the body looks good. And for me, an 80's or 90's vehicle really isn't that old!
