Did you know the breed’s name “American Akita”
was given in Mexico? After the Japanese tried to keep the name “Akita” only for the Japanese line (Ichinoseki), the American line (Dewa) was named internationally as “Great Japanese Dog”, finally in Mexico the American line was named “American Akita” and it stayed ever since

Again, a very well done discussion of the pros of American Akita ownership.
My # 1 is the A List movie star looks with what is a relatively robust, healthy and long-lived giant breed dog that is absolutely an instant kick-ass war dog that will take down intruders with alacrity. Until you see them toggle into action and transition instantly from 0 to 120 mph in a second, it is hard to explain and comprehend the total shock and awe of these magnificent dogs. Akitas are not really very hard to socialize to tolerate people and well behaved children, but training for off leash command and control around wildlife and other dogs is something altogether different with an Akita or a Chow Chow.
These are not dogs that are known for tolerating strange animals or any trespass on their territory and that trait is almost impossible to train out of a dog. All you can do is dial down the aggression a few notches. But, that trait is why these are the best dogs to take with you into the wilderness or into a rough urban environment such a city park at night. These dogs have a fearsome reputation that is well deserved and anyone who has familiarity with the reputation of the breed will not trifle with one of these dogs, let alone two or three. These dogs are like NFL linebackers - fast and powerful and hard hitting yet incredibly agile and athletic and they have huge teeth that are extremely sharp backed up by a vise-like bite strength that is proportional to the size of their anvil shaped bear-like heads.
Perhaps the most endearing trait these dogs have is their personality which consists of affection and talking. Many of these dogs sound like a moose and cow when they are happy and excited. They will bellow and howl with delight and jump up and put their paws on your shoulders when you come home.
I do agree that these are like big cats that require play but are exceptionally clean and odorless (compared to a hound dog for example) and who as you say reserve their affection for their people. Owning an Akita is like living with an intelligent sentient roommate that has his or her own mind and agenda. They will let you know what they want from a floor fan needing to turned on to a meal to a walk to affection to play. They are very interactive much like a very large cat and highly intelligent like a cat. Yet they will sleep next to you for hours and not need constant attention like many small dog breeds.
That said, these dogs are so big and powerful, that you have to be a fairly healthy, robust and young to manage 1 or 2 of these dogs as they can be a handful and by that I mean, they can literally drag you across the street if you don't maintain command and control and situational awareness. You always have to maintain social distance from other dogs as you just never really know how these dogs will react to a strange dog so as far as meeting other people, this is true so long as the other person does not have a dog with them. If they do, the conversation will usually be held at a distance (across the street) in most situations.

@@GetFitwithDogs BTW - great content and channel. Not too many people who have such content really have as much experience as you and your family do. You have to own several of these dogs over many years to see all the facets of the breed displayed in a particular dog.

Thank you for the compliment! The dogs have definitely taught me a lot; about myself, about dogs, and about Akitas.
It has always been said that you can learn a lot about someone by their relationship the people in their lives, but I also think you can learn a lot about a person through the relationship they have with their dog.

1 male & 1 female? How do they get along with each other?

I'm not sure if you're asking Greg or myself, but I have a male and female. They get along great. I won't say they haven't had their spats though. Food was a challenge for the two of them.
My mom has a female Akita and my male likes her just fine, but the two females are apprehensive around each other and have to be watched. That's the big white one in this video. Her and the smallest one are the two females.
