@FredFlix We grew up through some crazy things. Some great music, too. I'd go back to 1974, in a minute. Even my time in the Marine Corps. Thanks again Fred.
Thank you for the amazing vid as usual Fred! I spent part of this summer as a Girl Scout, part of it on my grandparents farm, and most of it riding my bike across town with my friends and causing all sorts of trouble my parents never found out about! What a different world it was.
The World We Knew! Excellent insight into those halcyon days! Did you know I worked with Mr. Savalas on his last acting job! And it was a Kojak tv movie! He thought I had the look to make it in Hollywood! Of course I was a bit shy in those days to pursue an acting career but he gave me confidence to continue designing animation and film projects instead. Great post Mr Flix -time traveller.
Born in 1962 these mid seventies videos are so special, I remember much of what you have presented, and all of it feels familiar. Those were some good times.
Gosh---just seeing the month and year featured, and it really puts you in the time and place. I can still see our old house and the whole neighborhood. Playing outside with all the neighbor kids. Wow. Good times.
Me too. I was just turning 13 and I can also see the neighborhood, all the kids on our street out playing and riding bikes. At night it was hide and seek and during the day we’d be at the park or the pool.
Generation X kid here, born June 18, 1967. I loved the 1970's! My family and i were living in Benton Arkansas during the early 1970's. Hello from Tyler Texas!
Wonderful, Fred. Great work as always. If I had to pick one year that summarized what the 70s were like, it would be 1974. The hippy movement had faded by then … yet it was still before Disco and Star Wars really changed the feel of things. Unique times. I was 8 going on 9 years old...but my childhood memories are crystal clear and I was into media and pop culture even then. The summers of 74 and 76 were my favorite childhood summers. Clearly remember all of this music and the feel of the times. I grew up not far from you in Columbia, SC - and remember that summer heading in your direction with the family to Edisto Beach. The entire way down, I heard "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corporation - and had a copy of Giant Size Spider-Man and Master of Kung Fu in my lap. All of my allowance money was spent on Marvel Comics, occasionally Famous Monsters of Filmland - and Topps' Wacky Packages (which were peaking in the summer of 1974). Great time to be a kid. (as for Johnny Carson, he was the best - and is so missed).
Mine are in the Marvel Masterworks hardback format these days after selling my collection years ago (a love for golden age comics tends to price you out of the originals … lol). I’m sure we could talk comics for hours.
1974. I was 7. I remember Young Frankenstein came out. So many detective shows on TV. Thank you so much for the memories. OMG My first car was a gold duster. I bought it off the side of the road. $300 and my dad's talent got it running. It sits now in Adelanto in the junk yard. Had to leave it when the radiator blew. #memories
I was a little boy in the 70s. It was tge best time of my life. This channel let's me travel back in time to those awesome days, and I'm very gratefully. 🙌
If I'm not mistaken, Death Wish was the movie debut of Jeff Goldblum as one of the guys who attacked Bronson's wife and daughter. And one of my all time crushes in that Plymouth ad, with Judy Strangis as Mean Mary Jean. She starred in Electra Woman and DynaGirl on ABC's Saturday morning lineup. Another cool video Fred!
Thanks Fred, awesome stuff ❤😊 !! Seeing that Rolling Stones cover with the Carpenters reminded me of my older brother threatening to break my 2 albums when I played them. He listened to much cooler music 😅
Great stuff as always Fred! I was celebrating my 9th birthday at that time. I had siblings who were in their teens at that time, and seemed to always have the radio on, so I remember alot of these great songs and more playing. I can't believe as much as I've always loved cars, that I don't particularly remember seeing Gone in 60 Seconds, but I most likely did, since we did go to the local drive-in and theater on a fairly regular basis. I remember the remake though. I became a Bronson some years later. I'm forever thankful though, that I got to experience a time, that although had it's own particular problems, still seems to me, to have such a more comforting feeling sometimes, than the world I'm in today. Thanks for the wonderful trips back there! 🤟😎
The year that I would turn 12. The biggest thing that happened to me was that my grandmother was beared on my birthday. That was the saddest birthday of my life. But that didn't compare to when I lost my parents and my car in 1995. I still miss them, and I probably always will.
OMG this one is really disturbing. We get so wrapped up in nostalgia that the troubles of the world then seem to dim. I appreciate the reminder that horrible things have always been happening too.
These are fantastic clips Fred! I would go back in a minute! I was 19 then. I can see I'm not alone about feeling that way. Thank you and the Frank Sinatra song in the beginning and with the sign off screen were a perfect ending.
Thank You Fred For That Piece On Christine Chubbuck! I Was Stunned When I Did Some More Research On That Tragic Event! I Can Imagine How The Viewers Of That Broadcast Felt Even Though They Only Saw A Couple Of Seconds Before The Station Faded To Black But I Guess They Saw Enough To Be Etched In Their Minds Forever! Such A Sad Story!😥
Nice job again, Fred! 3:32 - Rod Serling was dead just a year to the month later. 5:12 - The paper was dated on my 9th b-day. What a horrible thing for people to see. This was a generally depressing time for me over the past year then, but it got better soon. 5:44 - Personally I'm glad the national speed limit was repealed about 21 years later. 6:38 - I woulldn't mind seeing YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS while flying. 8:50 - I remember reading a review of this film that stated that the humor rarely rose above the level of Jr. High locker room.
Oh, yeah, it was silly, Jon. But somewhat enjoyable back then, because nobody had made an X-rated sci-fi movie before). And it had a classic Harryhausen-type monster at the end who said things like, "Up yours, Gordon" (giving him the finger) and (to Dale Ardor): "I want to look at your tits." And he did.
The Jack Webb commercial makes me wonder if anyone still even uses travelers checks anymore. A lot of places charge a fee to cash them just like any other check...which certainly makes them NOT the same as cash, including the American Express ones that Karl Malden advertised.
My best friend and I were asked out on a'double-date' and they actually took us to the Drive-In to see a double feature of 'Flesh Gordon' AND 'FRITZ THE CAT'!!! My poor mom would have fainted had I told her what movie those boys took us to!
Did they at least get to first base, MishLaRue? Because, considering the nature of those movies and the venue, I'm sure they wanted to play ball and try to score.
Interesting and informative vid, Fred. Mr. Savalas pectorals? Well, nothing to do with Burt Reynold's Cosmo spread 2 years before. Now *that* could rock the boat. 🤭💜🤟
The girl at 7:53 is such a cutie. I've seen Flesh Gordon. It's....something. The lisping monster was funny. The older I get, the more I look back to these times of my youth. One of my friends just told me he'll likely need a new shoulder. Sigh.
I grew up in or around the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I had totally forgotten about the scandalous movie "Deep Throat". Wow, things were definitely much more conservative back then. I'm guessing anyone could find this or worse on the Internet today.
I read the tragic tale of Christine Chubbuck in a Wikipedia article. Also, what compelled Rod Serling to chill for a Japanese car company? Thanks anyway, FredFlix. 😕
Well I was five but the funniest thing was arresting the ticket seller and projectionist over Deep Throat! The whole thing is hilariously ridiculous but that's like arresting the burger maker at macdonald's because 100 lbs of meat was bad! LoL! Why not arrest the actual top dog if they have to arrest anyone!😂 And it made no difference...... EVERYONE eventually saw Deep Throat! LoL! Thank u Fred!
Flesh Gordon? Damn, was around in 1974, yes I admit I turned 9 that year but I never heard of or ever saw a commercial for that this is literally my first time hearing about that. The movie looks so bad and the acting is terrible but to be honest would love to see it one time just to see how horrible a movie it really is.
You should check it out. It was X-rated at time (would get R today). The funniest thing was the Harryhausen-style stop-motion giant monster at the end, who said things like, "Up yours, Gordon" and (to Dale Ardor): "I want to look at your tits."
@@FredFlix I watch a lot of your videos and I appreciate the nostalgia, having been born in 1960. But as regards this video, I see many parallels to 2024.
Funny to see color televisions of the early 70s - Zenith, Quasar, RCA, GE, etc. What brand did your parents eventually buy? By today's standards they were of course blurry and prone to static and vertical hold problems, but at least they were theft-proof as in huge and heavy as hell.
I was 24 in 1974.Alot older than you Fred. I remember so much about those days but can't remember what I did yesterday. Thanks for the memories.❤
Marsha, you're an oldie but a goodie!
Thanks Fred for the memories of July 1974. I was stationed at Camp LeJeune waiting to be transferred to Okinawa. Love to be a 19 yr kid again.
