I've never come across a reactor as emotional as you are. It's refreshing to see.
The Martian ship didn't get destroyed. The Belter accelerated his rocks towards the Martians and did hit them, but the damage wasn't severe enough to destroy it. If you watch it again, you'll see that in response, the Martians fired a torpedo at the Belter ship. That was the explosion you saw in Diogo's visor.
In the scene with Dawes and Miller you can see a scar around Dawes neck. This is due to malfunctioning space helmets and as we saw with Mateo, malfunctions are common from overuse and cheap materials. The neck scars have been adopted in tattoes and used as a symbol of cultural identity of the Belters.
Fyi, Uncle Mateo exhaling and briefly opening his mask was the show trying to realistically portray space, unlike shows that act like exposure to vacuum is this huge dramatic thing.
As long as you exhale (so that air doesn't get sucked out of your lungs harder than your lungs can handle), and as long as there is still some positive pressure in your suit, it would be no problem to open your visor to hard vacuum for a second.
After 15-30 seconds, you would pass out from lack of oxygen, but it's not as dramatic as other TV and movies portray. The difference in pressure between atmosphere and space is the same as a diver surfacing from 33 ft underwater.
The only other accurate depiction of this that I can recall is Titan AE, where the window of a spacecraft is cracking, so the Captain tell the main character to exhale
That scene from Titan AE stuck with me ever since I saw it in the cinema. That was one hell of a movie
'Farscape' also has a character exposed to vacuum and survive fairly realistically (can't remember if they explicitly exhale though), the episode aired at almost the same time "Titan A.E." was released. And of course, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. You'd be OK even without positive pressure in your suit for a few seconds too BTW (particularly since I think we can easily assume Belters, especially when working in vacuum, would wear compression under layers).
One of the reasons I fell in love with the show is that every single character is 3-dimensional. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, their own viewpoints. Each person/side has specific reasons for why they act the way they do......and the show reveals these as it expands (having the writers of the incredible book series, as actual producers, helps).
At the start of the show Miller is a washed out cop (bribes, drunk, doesn't do much). He was given the Julie Mao case because Shadid didn't want him to find her....this was just being done so Star Helix could tell her father, "a detective has been assigned to find her." Fortunately the case reawakens Miller from the "fog" that he has been in for years.
Late to the party here but enjoying your reactions very much. We're only on Ep6 and I think you're the first person I have seen to have "got" the show so much - both the actual plotlines and the allegories therein. Bravo! Looking forwards to the rest.
@13:58 The belter pushes his visor up to remove a loose wire then pulls the visor back down to reseal his helmet.
Thanks to hollywood people have misconceptions that a small hole in a plane will suck everything out and shooting a car in the right spot will make large fireballs.
The Expanse always tries to get the physics right even when it goes against general preconceptions and what just happened in the show is actually how it would work in real life.
Your eyes don't get sucked out, you don't expand or pop and your skin doesn't boil. If you were to find yourself in a situation where there was something inside your helmet, you could depresurise your suit slow enough to not cause any damage to your body, expose yourself to space for a short time then represurise after you've fixed your helmet.
I'd say it feels far to easy to open that visor by accident, but if it works like an airplane door where you're fighting the internal pressure, then it could be set up to only open easily when the suit is depressurized (or not in a vacuum at all).
In theory anyways, in practice having a helmet that opens like that would likely be a real bitch to seal.... kind of like how in Gravity she gets in and out of space suits within a few seconds by herself, whereas real EVA suits take a long time and help getting in and out of.
And he exhales/keeps his mouth open, which is exactly what you should do in a vacuum (otherwise your lung tissue would rupture as the gases force their way out).
But yeah as Daniel Guisinger says, we have to assume some fancy sealing tech to make that helmet design a sensible one. It wouldn't really work like an aeroplane door because he's opening it upwards, not inwards against the pressure though I guess we can easily assume some sort of pressure catch fail-safe on the visor.
I've always absolutely LOVED the scene where Dawes asks Miller if he's ever cried so hard from total heartbreak that he started crying tears of blood.
Jared Harris acts the hell out of Anderson Dawes! I love that there aren't many truly "bad guys" in the expanse. People do some very bad things but they all have their reasons, and for the most part they are all doing what they believe is for the best.
Couldn’t agree more!
I think Amos Burton is one of the most unique characters I’ve ever seen. The writers must have known someone like him in real life, because he does not conform to any common character trope.
He was a player character in a roleplaying game, can't remember the name of the guy that played him but he pops up in comments on youtube and reddit every now and then so you might get the opportunity to ask him how he came up with Amos
Re: opening visor on space suit in a vacuum. There's been a lot of discussion of this scene on the internet, with a lot of folks saying The Expanse "blew it;" actually, they got it right. Experts who have weighed in on the issue point out that people wouldn't "catastrophically explode" as we've all assumed, and that folks who are used to working in space (e.g., belters) would know they had a few seconds to do this with proper breathing techniques if they needed to deal with any issues. like removing a loose wire floating inside the helmet.
In fact you could even assume it's a sort of rite of passage for a rock hopper to "breathe vacuum", kind of like when hunters are "blooded" and so on.
Really like how you are drawing the storylines together with todays sad realities. Great reaction, thankyou.
I'm also a fan of Jared Harris. I love him on The Expanse and Fringe, and he played my favorite version of Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Interesting theory on what draws Miller to Julie Mao.
Chrisjen is my top favorite character on the show. I like her cunningness and her no-bullshit attitude.
"You're in love with Julie Mao" "What a fucking mess" LOL
You have a big heart, Scriptonite. It makes you a good person as well as one of my favorite reactors. Glad you're coming around on Alex.
😘😘😘
Great reaction again. One of the things I love most about The Expanse is that almost every character, even minor ones, have interesting and believable character arcs that change the relationships between them and the way they look at the world. I'm 100% sure that was a bottle of gin, not water, but yeah. They did condemn them to death by making them go around the restricted zone.
No, the Martians took their water. Not booze. Mateo I believe was drinking afterwards though
Really love your editing. Top notch. You seem to be getting a lot of content without bumping up against copy right issues. Really entertaining and emotional reactions.👏
Jazoon 72 It’s painstaking work getting down to just 10mins of actual visual footage and then working in the additional audio that helps have it feel longer. Thank you for appreciating it ❤️
Dawe's recollection about his sister is, imo, the best performance by Jared Harris ever. I am a little sad to see you cut out the "blood tears" bit, which was the hardest hitting part for me. A great example of the desperation of rock hoppers is exhibited by Diogo's uncle. He spaces his nephew in a well-traveled shipping lane while going on a suicide run himself.
Tough choices for the TH-cam edit. But the whole episodes are available on Patreon x
@@ScriptoniteReacts When you rewatch, pay close attention to Dawe's expressions. 1st when Miller says "didn't see the blood on your hands," he scoffs and you can feel him thinking "you better not go there." Then the moment Miller says sister, his eyes snap on - "Oh no you didn't!"
All while maintaining that accent.
I like how this episode was just you continuously shaking your head.
Oh there's more of that to come :D x
@@ScriptoniteReacts I still want the Scriptonite bobble head action figure
I just can't wait till you get to the later episodes, it's building but the stuff that happens later on is just going to blow your mind if you're enjoying it now. Really enjoying watching it through your perspective, keep going :)
Movie/TV (Real Life?) basics: You tell someone a secret and you hear "Who else knows about this?". Danger!!
If you want to see Jared Harris in another role that is closer to Dawes than his Mad Men role, I would suggest his run on Fringe (I would also suggest watching Fringe just generally).
watched it, loved it :) x
I know you love little details, so here’s a good one that not too many people know:
Those neck tattoos that some belters have, like Naomi at 28:48? They’re meant to be a callback to when the belt was first colonized. Most of the original belters had to work with scrappy space suits with pressure seals that chafed or bruised the neck and left marks.
My best friend HATED Amos at first. He was her least favorite character. (Her favorite character was Shed... it's an open joke among my friends and I that her favorite character ALWAYS dies. ALWAYS. To the point where she has said, in the middle of an episode "[blank] is my favorite character", and they have died within a few minutes.) Anyway, around the middle of the first season, she came to love him. So did a lot of people. He's Amos. He's... not complicated. Not simple. Just not complicated. He'll do what needs to be done. And I, at least, love him.
5:01 - "Last episode Jared acted the socks off it; if Burton has a good episode, in this episode it'll be Burton." Welp...in this episode I'm guessing it'll be Jared's socks again :)
8:50 - Has this show ever made you cry so hard...
Hey strange about Amazon Prime - I’m using it for my reactions and it’s not been a problem at all for screen record. Wonder what the problem is? Different browser maybe?
Reacters reacting to reacter's reactions. It just got meta in here.
If you're watching on a mac, try recording your screen with quicktime pro. If that doesn't work, switching browsers might help. Chrome is generally better than Safari and firefox would be worth trying too. If quicktime pro isn't for you, you can try screenflow, but they have a habit of forcing you to pay for a new version everytime a new macOS update comes out.
If you're on Windows 10, you could try and record with the built in Windows Game Bar. If you're on an earlier version and you have a decent nvidia graphics card, you could try Shadowplay. Or try the third party Bandicam.
Whatever method you use, just be aware that the file sizes will be quite large by default so you'll probably want to put the quality way down and make some test recordings to find the best quality without filling your computer's storage.
Jayden Pearse ha! 👍🏼
Good news is, I have Avasarala swearing a lot in upcoming episodes :) I think we're good! I love having you in here Mark! You're an absolute joy xxx
@@spartanatreyu Chrome tends to abide with the inbuilt copyright protection on netflix and amazon prime more, and disables screen recording (at least certain standards) in my experience. Firefox will play the content with the recording on but at 720p only, at least on netflix. HDCP kinda sucks but that's what you get with the copyright mafia.
Mark Ward im wa gut mang!
You're going to need to get onboard with calling him Amos.
It's already happened, but you've not seen it yet :)
@@ScriptoniteReacts I'm happy about that kopeng, i shouldnt be yelling youtube at my age.
You called him Amos at least once in this video. Progress! :-)
It is funny how some people getting called by one name or the other. Miller for example, by his last name.... by everyone. I understand it with the military and political types, thats kind of how the world works.... but I would have thought Miller would be on a first name basis.
@@dguisinger Yeah, noted the same myself previously. I think it's mostly just down to what the other characters call them. Early on especially, viewers are trying to remember quite a large ensemble so they grab onto whatever names are being used in the show. And does _anyone_ (in the show) call Miller 'Joe' in the first few eps ? I'm not sure I even heard/registered his first name at all until later. Same with Holden - partly because of his Canterbury rank and partly because of lack of familiarity, his shipmates call him Holden in the early episodes (rather than Jim/James/Jimmy/etc.) and therefore so do most viewers. Whereas Naomi, Amos, Alex and (poor old) Shed are all mostly referred to by first name (ETA: Scriptonite is the first reactor i've seen to partly buck that trend BTW).
"Those same Wanker Martians!" lol, god i love British expressions
Re: Jared Harris - I highly recommend him in Fringe - he plays a really interesting bad guy in it. That said, I completely recommend Fringe in general.
I love Fringe! x
Bizarre things is, any single good carbonaceous chondritic asteriod consists of billions of tons of raw materials that could easily supply the enter Belter population for centuries.
Back to this after about a 24 hour break. Good science fiction addresses modern issues with a future flair. You don't see it that often these days because what science fiction has COME to mean is "cool space battles". It's more action-adventure/space opera than science fiction (that's what happened to Star Trek after Next Generation.) And space battles can be fun, but they should happen in moderation. The real strength of The Expanse is that it sends a message that's relevant to the modern day... from two or three hundred years in the future. Racism, nationalism, prejudice, intolerance, income inequality, all of that and more. Good science fiction is the kind of thing that should make people think about these things, or talk about them. I think the Expanse accomplishes that.
Along with being a rip roaring great ride.
Spot on!
They write some great stuff for Anderson Dawes. I'm always riveted when he's speaking.
They really capture his charisma. Its easy to see how you could end up totally on his side despite the things he's done.
30:05 "respectful"...
What an interesting choice of words.
I really appreciated that he didn't take the opportunity kiss her while she was so vulnerable emotionally x
No, I get it... But what's interesting are the implications. That it would've been a lesser form of consent on her part or that he'd have been somehow taking advantage. Meanwhile, from another perspective, it was clearly what she wanted, and possibly what she needed; and he basically rejected her.
Another interesting aspect is to view the scenario with reversed gender roles. If he had been the one who was vulnerable and in need of "comfort" and she, while desirous, was the one who "just said 'no' ", she might've been dubbed "self-respecting". It's interesting is all.
Oops, forgot the words: really meaty analysis (is that even a phrase?) - great stuff!
Miller is at least partially playing Dawes and the guy who knew Julie, saying what he needs to to get info from them. People love to correct others.
44´27" a very fair conclusion
Yeah, like a lot of the best sci-fi 'The Expanse' uses its setting to metaphorically represent a current issue, in this case the haves and have-nots. Belters are _literally_ trapped in their situation and the resource gap is starkly amplified in its reduction to the essentials like air and water. Unsurprisingly for a series based on books by two American authors, it's still a mostly US approach to class (even in the Belt, money means you move up as far as that money will take you) but it's pretty well realised nonetheless (IMO).
Your take on Miller at this point... wasn't mine, put it that way ;). I don't see him as ashamed of his class so much as a damaged romantic idealist that's seen too much of the dark, squalid side of what people (including _his_ people, the Belters) can be like and so become deeply cynical, especially about causes. In different circumstances he'd be denying his Earther or Martian roots too in other words - Miller, like Groucho Marx, refuses to join any club that would have him as a member ;).
have you watched The Terror? Jared Harris was brilliant in that also.
i hear what you're saying about Miller, he is meant to be a jerk but his arc.... is... well you'll see.
Harris has an amazing range as an actor. Seeing him here as Dawes is so far removed from his Lane Pryce in Madmen, it's easy to miss that it's the same guy. He was great in The Terror too.
20:41, It’s interesting you teared up then because I was a lot more cynical, the way his speech flowed felt unnatural and struck me as pre-prepared (in universe) and possibly not even true, it was like he was trying to convert Miller, by any means necessary, lies and threats.
Yeah, Naomi is manipulating them all, Holden only thinks he is in charge.
I just managed to capture Amazon Prime footage of The Expanse using OBS and a Display Capture source. Should solve your problem :)
I totally empathise with the constant reordering of favourites every scene. Though as a book reader first I could never put Naomi up top, she was a much nicer character in the books
nice reactions
About Jarred Harris, have or will you watch Chernobyl?
The helmet scene is mostly accurate, though he should have emptied his lungs before opening his visor, not during. It's about 15 seconds till you're knocked out, and about 90 till you're dead and beyond saving. It's helped by the fact that they're probably working in low pressure suits and ships, which makes the quick back and forth even less of a shock than a full atmosphere pressure level change.
The end result? If you got a sparking wire in your helmet, go right ahead and deal with it, just make it fast. Plus come on, that scene's a great weak up call ain't it?
You are the only Expanse reactor whose opinions I actually listen to, usually I just watch their reactions. BUT, please stay out of the 21st Century. We've had decades to have our opinions diverge on current events, but we are all pretty new on the world of The Expanse.
Oh no! Science fiction has...metaphors for contemporary real life situations? Disaster! Worldview might actually need to be looked at critically!
You really wear your heart on your sleeve huh ? Stay true to yourself I'm a bit more of a cynic but I appreciate your candor
Isn't Wes Chatham wonderful as Amos?
He's so good I'm afraid of him.
💫⭐️
There are better SyFy versions out there that have all the swearing and stuff...
Like the Bluray?
@@dapeach06 I guess, but then she would have to go through the extra step of ripping the video from the disc. There's other ways still...
If you like Jared Harris in this, I dare you to watch The Terror.
To be fair, Miller is pretty patronizing and cynical to everyone in those first few episodes, not just women. But I definitely see your point
I don't think he's patronizing to everyone... just to the people that haven't become as cynical / jaded as he himself is...
So basically like me, who is not a morning person, to morning people, until I've had my coffee and smoke :D
@@nt78stonewobble well he is patronizing to Anderson Dawes, Fred Johnson, Shaddid and Amos, who are all pretty cynical characters
@@dapeach06 Nyah, I think it still stands:
Dawes wants the revolution and a better tomorrow. Believes in it even. Hope.
Fred Johnson is in a kinda similar vein. Hope.
Shaddid represents law, order and some degree of justice (until the hope of revolution buys her out).
Amos is probably a nice combination of "psychopath" to be disliked by Miller, but also part of Holdens personal crusade.
But hey... It was just a loose thought while watching the reaction... and being keenly reminded of my own feelings of caffeine needs. :D
You are too emotional for this. It was all Kindergarten until now...
Mate, I've survived multiple real life warzones. This is a walk in the park :) Being able to express my emotions is not weakness, it builds resilience x
Dont be jealous of other peoples success, instead look to what you can improve for yourself. The rich people grasped this from the beginning and took advantage of it. Everyone can do it, to varying degrees. If we all let go of our jealousy and focused on bettering ourselves then we would all live far more meaningful and fullfilling lives. Capitalism is not meant to make everyone rich, rather it is to provide everyone with opportunity and options for betterment. Wealth inequality is a red herring, i realise i'm not going to convince you and others with what i say right in this moment. Perhaps never. But at least consider these words and remember them. Despite our differences in politcal opinion, i am enjoying your reactions and think you are quite a thoughtful person i enjoy your commentary. I look forward to seeing the rest of your reactions.
thanks Jack for mansplaining the moral virtues of unbridled capitalism...
@@davidhart1674 Please lets not escalate this.
