Dave ! -- We thank you for mentioning us and our month-long visit to southwestern England. It was great to meet you. In Lyme, by the way, we stayed at a B&B on Colway Lane, just off the beautiful River Lim Path -- so we were able to walk the path into town and back several times in the four-plus days we spent in the area, and also northwest into Uplyme. All in all, we must have walked through at least six of the areas in Dorset you yourself and Logan visited before us, which we happily watched on TH-cam prior to our trip. -- John and Sandy, New England, USA.
It was lovely meeting you both. Sounds like you had a great trip. Hopefully you will get the chance to return again and continue exploring! All the best. Dave (& Logan!)
Hi Dave,we've been going to charmouth almost twice a year since 1979,we simply never get bored of walking between charmouth to seatown or charmouth to lyme regis.our main focus is looking for iron pyrite ammonites and belemnites,it's an absolutely stunning part of England, the country pubs selling local ciders and ales is also a great advantage.,cheers for a great video.
Thank you Barry. Photos & a map of each walk are posted on my Facebook page "Dave's Countryside Walks" & each video walk is put in a separate "Playlist" depending on the area (e.g. Dorset, Hampshire etc). One day, I will get around to putting together as small booklet - which will require some new skills! Thanks for watching.
Dave that was wonderful. I'm going to watch it again. If we ever came back to England to live, (difficult after 50 years in France) Lyme regis would be the place. Great video. Thanks so much
I used to live in Somerset and we would take family day trips to Lyme Regis on many occasions. I regret that we did not get to see many of the places that Dave showed in the video.
Really good film. I live in Exeter, so have been to Lyme Regis many times. In fact, I was there yesterday (19/11/2022) on the way home from Weymouth. The bus passes Belmont House 👍
Dave you've made me blubr like a baby I grew up surfing there it looks lovely and serene in your video but you should see it in its winter guise brutal!! Monmouth house is now a superb B&B again fantastic film made me super homesick so much trivia I could share over a pint
Good evening dave how you find the amazing places that you vist is just brilliant very enjoyable makes my day looking forward to the next one love all about the history cheers Craig
You certainly found lots of nooks and crannies to explore in Lyme Regis! I used to see the pink house from the bus I caught out of town. And my b&b was just by the weir you walked past on the river Lym (or waterfall as a local called it!) so I walked the lower reaches of path a lot as my route into town and to seafront. I made it to Uplyme too but I think there were cows in the meadow on path you took onwards. You seem lucky not to encounter many cows on your walks! I ended up walking a bit of the Wessex Ridgeway - not too well waymarked in places- to Wootton Fitzpaine and back to Charmouth. Found this video very interesting have visited in July. Wish I had gone on and seen viaduct!
The viaduct certainly made for a good photo. Sadly I don't think you can walk across it as it looks like it is on private land but at least you can go underneath and alongside it!
Many thanks Dave and Logan. My Grandson and I spent a week camping near Lyme Regis while he did his work experience at the Aquarium, that was mid July, sadly just too hot to do any exploring, so your lovely vlog made up for that!! Take care.
It was lovely to see the countryside I live in and walk often around, thank you for showing it off to others in such a wonderful way, happy walking all.
This was good for me from a railway perspective. Such a shame about the support for that arch at Cannington viaduct. Even doing the same on the other side would have made it look more balanced. But a remarkable survivor, and a pointer to the fact that thebranch line had to take a really rather circuitous route because of the contours. Lyme Regis station was really most inconvenient for the town, being high up on the hillside above it (a bit like Ilfracombe). There was only one intermediate station, Combpyne, and that some distance from the small seetlement of that name. Uplyme had the best claim to be served, but permission would not be granted because of the gradients. As for that brilliant font, I always look for those first thing in churches as they are often the only survivors of original buildings. I can only guess from your film that it was Purbeck marble? Great film.
Thanks Bernie. If you have not done so already, do check out the film of the Castleman Corkscrew - I am sure you will find it interesting! th-cam.com/video/rUgzlruVeJg/w-d-xo.html
Good Morning from Pennsylvania in the US, Dave. I just found your channel today - it popped up unexpectedly in my TH-cam feed and I'm so glad it did. It was nice to revisit Lyme Regis, a place of good memories for myself, my late husband and elder daughter from a trip many years ago. And what a beautiful day you had! So much sunshine and blue sky! I subscribed, liked, and will now check out your other videos. Most likely, I'll be binge watching today!
I was in Lyme Regis last week but had slightly different experience of the place because I was with my 7year old son who just wanted to swim in the sea and eat ice cream. Both worthwhile activities though.
That was a long walk, Dave. Those stone steps that protrude from the wall of the Cobb, I’ve always found them quite difficult to negotiate, especially as I get older! Would be easier with a handrail and that top mill... How did they get water to the wheel? It appeared to be set into the bank! I’ve walk down the Lym river with my sister a few times over the years, so I know how pretty that trek is. Annoyingly, I still haven’t got to that beautiful viaduct. Nicely filmed and presented . Thank you.
What lovely views. So nice to follow you on this walk. I have walked up along the lower part of the river once or twice - you can sometimes see Dippers and Grey Wagtails. Not able to walk as far as you did so it was good to see what lies beyond! Looks wonderful! As always, love seeing Logan keeping you company!
If you haven't already done so, do check out our video of the walk to Golden Cap. As you say, the views from there are amazing. th-cam.com/video/O4mC0ZoOobg/w-d-xo.html
Dave, you've really surpassed yourself this time! What a cracking video! A most enjoyable tour with you and Logan around Lyme Regis, packed with nuggets of interesting information, a beautiful walk, absolutely stunning scenery and perfect weather. Thanks for taking the time to do so much research. You’ve done so many enjoyable walks, it’s difficult to say whether this one is my favourite, but it’s certainly vying for top spot!
What a lovely walk on a beautiful day. Did you worry that your tripod would fall off the Cobb? Also ... I think in 2006 beach renovations LR has had help in the form of huge boulders from Norway, shingle from the Isle of Wight and special sand from France.
Great video, just watched it (and subscribed). I lived in Lyme in my formative years, well just north of Uplyme in a tiny place called Rocombe. So other than the very interesting run down of the town, two things sprung to mind. Firstly the walk along the Lim. The bit where it meets the sea (just behind the Rockpoint Inn) is called the "Buddles" (the old bridge is called Buddle Bridge). As a kid I used to walk down from Rocombe, along the Lim valley to work in a tea shop (The Boathouse) that sits just below the cannon you pointed out. As you say, it's a beautiful walk, at least when it's not raining. The second point is the place called "The Glen". This was on the local school's Cross Country running route (probably still is). From Woodroffe School on the hill, down Tappers Knapp and then left along the Glen into Uplyme and back. Punishingly muddy in my day! Also the longer cross country route would take you under the viaduct, though that route was much longer and for dedicated runners only.
What's the best train station(s) near a long beach/coastal walk in dorset, Sussex, and Hampshire. That's not dangerous to get to the coast via the roads. (Walking). netley is nice but near to me, so done before. dorset is a nightmare without a car, and weymouth station to chesil beach is a bit tricky to negotiate. So is hinton admiral to the beach but maybe best I have found so far. More out the way and quiet the better. Any suggestions? Further afield welcome too. Love the videos Mr Ford, cheers 🍻 Steve.
Hi Steve. You could take the train to Lymington (branch line from Brockenhurst) and walk the section of the Solent Way (a coastal walk) from the town, around past Pennington to Keyhaven and Hurst Castle (& back). I have done videos of walks at both Pennington & Keyhaven which both include sections of the Solent Way & indeed have a video coming out this Friday on a walk to Hurst Castle which should give you some idea of the walk & views. I find that the best times to walk most coastal paths , to avoid the "crowds" (!) is early in the morning and outside of peak holiday periods.
I'm a little disappointed you didn't do your customary pub research in the Lyme Regis Brewery taproom which we could see next to the Town Mill! 19:46 The building was formerly the battery room of Lyme’s first power station. Never mind it will give us an excuse to investigate the establisment for ourselves. Cheers!
Thank you. I cannot remember the exact amount of time it took but I know that we started early (before 8am at least) in order to film in the town & around the front before it got too busy and it was about mid afternoon when we finished. A normal walk of 5 miles usually takes me at least 5 hours to actually film as there are so many stops (putting up the tripod & taking it down) and often there are times when I have to wait for the sun to come out from behind a cloud to get better light etc.
I am afraid that I don't know the area that well. I believe that the path across it is on private land though. I recall getting a great view of it as we climbed up from Cannington Lane to Horseman's Hill via the public footpath (shows on an OS Map to the East of the viaduct).
Thank you. I do all the filming myself - either "hand held" or using a tripod. I do not have a drone. On a few occasions, I have had someone else with me to help - mainly if the footage involves me getting on or off a ferry or a train!

This has brought back some lovely, happy memories from 2012 with my husband Paul and our jack russell Sal. Beautiful walk. Thankyou.
Thank you. Glad that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.

Yes, I certainly picked a good day with the weather, for sure!
Great video Dave, Lyme Regis has a atmosphere all of its own and one of my favourite places, thank you
Thanks Mike. I am certainly going to have to go back as there were parts of the town that I didn't get a chance to explore.
Great countryside walk with beautiful scenery And amazing views
Thank you Keith.
Enjoying Lyme Regis

Superb video Dave. So interesting and such great scenery. Never been but now I want to visit!
Thanks Mark. I am certainly going to go back there as there is so much still to explore - one day simply wasn't enough time!

Are there any vantage points above Cannington Viaduct where you can pull over your car and get a photo of the Viaduct ? Thanks

I just have my camera on a tripod. I have recently started to use a HoverAirX1 Mini drone, on the odd occasion.
