A thumbnail is exactly that, a small image that helps the viewer see what a video is about before watching. Most sites will randomly pick a single frame from your video to use as the thumbnail, but this may not look good, may not accurately represent the video, or may not make the viewer want to click through and watch. Whenever you look at video recommendations on your TH-cam homepage or search results, you're looking at thumbnails.
