  • Pictures taken at the former RAF Colerne in 1995. Under no circumstances should you enter Military or private property without permission. I believe some of these buildings are now demolished.
They are scanned off old prints. If you have an interest in the subject of RAF architecture, then my books on the subject are still available. You can purchase directly from me or just search "British Airfield Buildings" on ebay.
If you need to use any of the pictures, then please ask.
    More Stations "Revisited" to follow.
Contact me Graham Innes at gijock@btinternet.com
Also, check out the great work being done by the "Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust" link www.abct.org.uk/

My late father was stationed there from 1949-51 he was crash crew, told me quite a few stories about his time there.
One that stands out was being scrambled late at night to prepare the runway for Lancaster coming in to land, that didnt............

I spent a week there with the ATC in 1965. I think they had Varsities there then.
Which were unfortunately grounded due to a recent accident.

Lovely camp. You were probably accommodated in the transit block?

I lived there as a kid (Thickwood) from 1961 to 1965 then served there in the C130 Engine Bay from '73 until its closure in '75. Back in 1965 the Station was operating Handley Page Hastings, all of which were grounded in July 1965 because of a fatal crash at Abingdon. I remember it well because our Boy Scout Leader (Brock) was killed in the crash.

Chippenham Tech were allowed to use the sports facilities in the 70s. Many hours spent Wednesday afternoon at the Swimming Pool.

What memories Colerne my first posting from 1974 until station was closed and everything went to Lyenham. I was in Brown Team servicing the C130's. Played lots of 5-A-Side and for the station. Remember Ossie, Jock MacCauley, Monty, Percy, Big Rick Stringer, Brian Smith. Had lots of good times down The Bell pub in Bath. It's still a great pub. Cheers Jim (Jed).

Yes, when I did the photos, the place had a real atmosphere and it was a particularly atractive station. Whilst you were there, I was at Leeming and Topcliffe.

Yes a lovely station. I believe the army will be moving out soon as the station is due for closure. Perhaps someone could confirm this?

Did my junior leaders training here in 1980_81 always seem to rain. Is it still owned by the mod or like so many camps sold off
