    Haven't fooled with this piece in a long time but did play it in a club that was first starting out , kind of a somewhat organized jam session , too bad covid had to come and break it up, it brought musicians together that I hadn't seen or played with in 20 years plus gave the musicians who are just starting out a taste of that scene, hope it comes back when things free up a little, thanks for the lesson, gonna go play it now!

    Very cool! I like this song, thanks for this lesson. I’ve been putting in a lot of practicing the past year (a couple hours each day), focusing a lot on playing through scales in all 12 keys, and learning some basic fundamental jazz chords and playing them all through the cycle of 4ths (or 5ths). One of the things I like to do lately is sit and improvise, free style, sometimes for 45 minutes or more. A song like Bluesette is perfect for this sort of practicing. As I sat here listening to you play this piece, I found myself recognizing the chords, the harmonic structures. I’m not quite to the point where I could call them out as you play, but I can tell the practicing is starting to pay off. Immersing myself in music everyday is so important. Kent, your videos continue to be an inspiration. Thank you!

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly right, Tim. Making an effort to practice every day is important. Set goals and follow a routine. That doesn't mean you can't diverge and have some fun improvising off the top of your head...that sometimes is how great songs are written. Be well and please subscribe.

    That was great, Kent. Very nice arrangement. I don’t know how Toots was able to play a chromatic harp. To be able to articulate all twelve notes of the scale would be challenging enough, but to hang in with the other major cats doing things like improvising by jumping around on the altered scale is quite another. I thought that he had a very unique talent and voice on his instrument. Thanks again!

    Very nicely demonstrated. I like how you keep the chords reasonably simple and show how effective combinations of straight or augmented fourths are in communicating a lot (use of 3rd, 6th and 9th). Your voicings are great. Just one suggestion: The recording is a bit over-compressed which makes the sound pump a little too much.

    I feel bad saying this because I don't want to be saying negative stuff about this, since it is totally extraordinary, great, wonderful, exceptional... and I absolutely love it! But I just want to make a small comment because I tried having a few people watch this video since I discovered it and I got the same response each time, that they have difficulty focusing on the piano because we hear you sing the notes close to the microphone (which I understand and is a good thing, musically speaking), so it makes kind of a breathy sound which takes their attention away from the piano. I'm not saying this as a critique but as a suggestion for the other videos you make, to maybe change the microphone angle, your proximity to it, or something (my goal is to help you gain more views and subscribers, not the opposite! But I know people easily focus on small things like these sometimes and it can affect them lol).
    Great work, honestly, one of the best music videos I've seen/heard in a long time!

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I realize that can be a distraction, I do it unconsciously. (it means that I'm getting into the music). I've tried to be more aware of it, and not do that. However the mic is in the camera which is close above my head and it's very sensitive. My recent videos I'm using external mics and a digital piano, so there's no risk of that. However you'll find that on certain videos you hear more of that or not at all.

    • @alexisgs8800
      @alexisgs8800 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KentHewittpiano88 Ahhh, I didn't think of looking at more recent videos before making my comment, to see if it was happening. I only discovered your channel recently and have been watching videos in no specific order so far. The external mic is a good idea. I know it can be difficult to control, I've seen other musicians do it as well, it's not a bad thing per se, on the contrary, it shows you know where you're going with your music. It was only because of the microphone. Thank you for answering! Have a good day :)

    One thing I've really noticed from the KH videos. To all KH Students: GET YOURSELVES A BACKING TRACK. (unless you're only playing ballads). Even if just a free drum beat off youtube or your electric piano drum machine. 3 note chord in the left hand + melody in the right hand Needs backing. It's like the glue that both hold it all together but it also gives you the freedom to swing too.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll echo your comment...a backing track is very helpful, particularly if you want to play with other musicians. You should also practice solo piano (equally important, if not more so). Thanks

  • @TheHighlander71

    Now Toots was free to name his songs anything he liked, but why did he call it "bluesette" I wonder? Does it have any clear bluesey items in it that I'm just not recognising?
    Thanks Kent. Toots was an amazing musician. Never realised he was a guitar player though :)

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out his guitar playing on early Shearing records. He might have named it that because the chord progression is similar to a blues written by Charlie Parker called Blues For Alice. Also it's a 24 measure form which is like a 12 bar blues but twice as long. The suggests Little Blues. Thanks!
