As a very young man I worked as an editorial assistant on the Boston Traveler in the mid-60's. Andrew Tully was still there at the time and though I never knew him, I would come to read his "CIA: The Inside Story" shortly after I left. Far less cognizant of (or,, sadly, interested in) history in those days than I came to be, I had no idea of his foray into Berlin -- but then, nobody ever told me about it, either. Until just now. Where you still with the _Traveler_ when it ceased publication? I know of the newspaper only through press clippings in family albums.
Are we supposed to use all those punctuation marks when writing in English? They're's so many of them!
@@jaymuzquiz2942 Jay, generally yes, that's the way it is. There are quite a few. But the text only has a double comma (,,) which is just a typo as far as I can tell. One feature is to forget about the punctuation marks. They matter but do not add contextual content really. So one can strip out punctuation and focus on the content. Unless it's poetry of course.
@@jaymuzquiz2942 Pretty much what Roderick said. Punctuation is important but you don't have to do it or go crazy with it. Especially in the youtube comments section. If a grammar nazi tries correcting you try not to take it personally but usually online native english speakers type with normal punctuation so ending sentences with periods for example. Sometimes native speakers just say whatever is on their mind and only pay attention to spelling and not really anything else. That person just made some mistakes and added flair but like what Roderick said, that doesn't really add much to the content of what they were saying. Just focus on what you are saying and focus on your conjugation and your appropriate use of words like your, you're and there and their and they're. Knowing the differences between those is actually important.

Dr Felton never fails to amaze me with little-known but very interesting facts about the war that not even documentary channels could produce.

... and 17 years later, the countries of these two "brothers" would have wiped out almost the entire planet in a nuclear war, leaving only losers on all sides.

Of course. When you come right down to it GI Joe, "Tommy," or "Ivan" were just regular working stiffs and would rather have been anywhere else than where they were. None of them asked for that war, and they all just wanted to get it over with and go the hell home.

When I was a young correspondent in Jugoslavia in the 90s I carried the first page from the introduction of Ernie Pyle's book, "This is your war." It lived in my wallet throughout those years and now resides, thread worn, in my war trunk.

Did you ever get up to Mostar, i was there for about 5 months until i was wounded and evacuated for medical treatment in Austria.
Even though they were punished I'd say the experience was still worth it.
Even at this point western leadership were terrified that some incident might spark and lead to fighting between them and the Soviets.
Funny how the western allies and soviet soldiers and people had such camaraderie while the governments were already plotting against and paranoid of each other.

My father, a British Military Police corporal, was assigned to escort a war photographer to the front. The photographer told him that if he was shot, my father was to make sure his photos got back. My father replied that if things got that hot, he would be long gone.
Sounds like a real hero.

Now we need to see the story of the American Paratrooper captured on D-Day that then became a Red Army tanker that fought in Berlin too! You do some the best WWII work out there keep it up!

There was some guy, a paratrooper, who got cought after the d-day, sent to a concentration camp somewhere in the eastern Orussia, but managed to escape. He ran to the east couple of days, was in a very bad condition, but luckily got very strange rescue - he was seen by Alexanda, one of the very few girls who were tank commanders. She took him to the divisions command, and he was offered to be transferred back to americans, but suddenly he said, he'd rather join the tankers (did he like Alexandra so much? Who knows). Anyways, he got Sherman tank and joined the tank brigade. Half a year later he and Alexandra got in a serious battle, Alexandra died from injuries, but the american guys luckily survived once again. Zhukov visited him in hospital and provided him some basic documents, as the originals were in the camp. After the war, he returned home to the US. One more interesting detail: he was considered to be dead and there was a ceremonial funeral of him. In 1946 he married a local girl and - just by the accident - the priest, who married them was the one, who buried him twi years earlier :) Much later in the 80s or 90s, the guy was on a TV with Yeltsin and Clinton. There's a footage somewhere, google it, it's funny and cool story

That US Army paratrooper who served with the Russians was named Byerely . (Joseph?) He was from Muskegon Michigan. He wrote a book about it . 101st Airborne. I have the book but read it years ago.

When my mother went to visit her brother's grave in the Hawaiian National Cemetery they told her to look for Ernie Pyle grave because he's buried right on the side of him. He was a construction Battalion CB died in Guam

3:27 My dad was with the 5th Air Force stationed on the little island of Le Shima when Ernie Pyle was killed there in the last days of the war in the Pacific. One of the few things he told me about his time in the war.

Mark Felton is THE one gonna fill the blanks in most pages of history book.
This is an absolutely stunning story. I would really love to see this fictionalized and turned into a film project or Netflix series. No idea how they’d recreate the shattered hellscape of Berlin’s infamous architecture. But by using these maverick journos as protagonists, it really would be a novel way of creating a focal point to depict the fall of Berlin in a cinematic way.

Holy crap this is a great idea. Would also like to see perhaps another correspondant who is in the city right before the fall when everyone is drunk knowing the impending doom is coming. A dipiction of the berlin philharmonic where cyanide was handed out by the youth would be crazy. Always thought the fall of Berlin would be a grand scale epic romantic tragady.
Germany gave the New World Order a hell of a fight, but ultimately their supplies were exhausted fighting in places like Stalingrad. The Axis powers were ultimately undone by the Yanks once again.

Thank you Mr. Felton for continuing to put out such great historical WW2 content! My Grandfather fought in Germany in WW2 and was with the troops of the Rainbow Division when they went into Dauchau on April 29th 1945!
I remember as a young boy the stories he would share with me when I was able to pry them out of him, looking back I know he never liked talking about them, but I was his 1st grandchild and he was my hero then and always!

I don’t know if it was only my unit but we had combat cameramen attached to us from JSOC who would take photos of us in combat and classified photos of terminated HVT’s or EKIA.
They were not affiliated with MSM.

It is interesting how the Stars and Stripes Newspaper was actually started during the Civil War, which was many years before WW2. Also it was reported during WW2 that there were at least 400 Union Soldiers who were still receiving pensions at the time of the conflict

I learn more about our true history on YT or TT than I ever did in school! Thanks Mark for your content.
Imagine how much work Mark Felton does for the 5-10min videos and then think of a teacher doing 5-6 lessons a day, each an hour long, imagine how much prep they need to do for each lesson and how much subject matter they need to teach, much of which is not that interesting, but is part of the syllabus, but they still have to engage the students. Imagine how much time teachers spend preparing for these lessons, marking the homework, helping students, and they dont get paid any more for it. A good teacher puts in more hours than Felton does on these videos, but the difficulty of the job is why so many teachers leave, and why many fail. Take this video, its about a niche action in the war, some reporters getting into Berlin, it teaches us nothing significant about the war, its good entertainment, but its not essential learning.
Mark Felton and History Guy are what the History Channel *should* be.
