  • Introduction to Secondary Surveillance Radar and how it works. After explaining the basics, I am showing how to generate and simulate transponder responses using off-the-shelf test equipment. A RTL1090 SDR is used to validate the generated test signal.

I have been doing allot of work with using modified RTL-SDRs for weather satellite receiving and airplane tracking and whatnot ... i love these little dongles they are so very useful!

Hello Sebastian, de IZ7VHF. Thank you for nice video. I would kindly ask you: is it possible to receive these signal with an SDR receiver? I suppose that is not useful device since so short distance in signal lasting, meaning few microseconds spacing between them. So, do we need actually an oscilloscope to see these signals on a screen? Thank you for answer.

Hey Roberto, yes, it is possible to receive SSR signals on a SDR dongle. Actually, that is exactly what I am doing at the end of the video. However, they don't provide much useful information. You get the transponder codes in your area and that's about it. But have a look at ADS-B reception, which provides a lot more information about the aircrafts in your area.

I just would like to ask that if i am recieving the IFF signals on a receiver that is transmitting the signals to an FPGA, can U also use FFT and integrating the power over a selected bandwidth? Or there is other way u would recommend, fyi, fpga receiving Analog

Sure you could do that. However, this sounds rather wasteful as a pulse detector. For detecting levels within a certain bandwidth around a single specific frequency, there's much better algorithms. The Goertzel algorithm for instance. You can find working code-examples for this algorithm in my GitHub repo: github.com/AI5GW/Goertzel

@@BalticLab so what you are pointing to is since my interest is only finding out if its zero or one, the Goertzl algorithm is simpler and so the work?
The issue is i am writing in Verilog, which is really concerning me since i am still a beginner in the field, would you please recommend me something that might direct me

+BMR Studio When I did this, I actually phoned up various ATC facilitis that are in very close proximity and let them know what I was doing. The odds of enough leaking out to cause any issues is extremely small though.

is it possible to take any aircraft data on dongle this dongle is specific or any usb can work and how to save data on it

This is a RTL SDR dongle, originally intended for TV reception. There is no way to store data on it.

Are you aware that 7777 is the exclusive code for a hijacked aircraft? That could be a bit embarrassing if some leaked out. Nice brief video.

This reply is not synchronized to an interrogation, so it would appear as noise or non-synchronized pulses with no meaning on the beacon interrogator.

7500 is for hijack, 7777 is used only in case of interception from a fighter jet
