  • A post-pandemic surge in students using their phones in class has led to public schools in several states instituting an all-out ban on devices in school. Teacher and writer Erica Berry joined CBS News to explain why a total ban could be an overcorrection.

Why can't students set up an out of office on their phones when in the classroom? Adults should have OOO on when they're in meetings or driving. Students should be allowed to use their phone before/after school bell rings, between classes or at lunch time. If family has an urgency and must reach student during class time, parents can call the office to report it and allow student to use the phone.

My high school did it well. Phones in the classroom? Unless teachers said something eitherwise, they were expected to be put away. In the halls, cafeteria, ect- totally allowed. So I thought that was good

A few of my teachers would have us put our phones on a wall organizer pouch and write our name on it. The reasoning was that on breaks or if you really need your phone, then you can find to it right away, but keep your phones away during lecture. Of course, this and the phone lockbox can easily be bypassed. Most people, most families have an old phone that they are not using anymore.
I think we should look at ways to allow phones in class, but limit it's capabilities. Maybe block cell signals on school buildings and have a relatively strong Wifi in the blocked regions. This way the school IT can block the apps like social media from connecting, while still allowing calls and educational tools. But this method is quite costly.

Let the parents sign a form giving consent. No reason kids should have cell phones on them during the day. They can’t control themselves from going on them. Adults can’t control themselves, so how could kids be expected to? If the parent needs to reach the child during the school day, they do what they used to do which is called the main office.
