Controversy revolves around a few things, some of it stems from his early days, his politics, and some recent SA stuff.
Barstool Sports got under fire for propagating rape culture at their college party events. His politics got the New York's Department of Labor looking at his company for potentially fostering a toxic work environment and threatening workers who might have wanted to unionize (baring employees from unionization is illegal). Other political controversy revolved around his passive association with the US right wing, generally his fan base leans a bit more conservative, and his interview with Donald Trump didn't help that idea he is associated with the political right in the US. Portnoy classifies himself as socially liberal and fiscally conservative, or in other words socially he is more blue (was against the overturn of Roe v Wade) and economically is more red (anti union, limited government, free trade). The SA stuff I don't really know much about, some people say it happened, others didn't, but its all up in the air to me.
Portnoy to me is an interesting figure, he has a big heart, great work ethic, and is generally a good socially aware person. However, with some things that compassion and empathy is lost because of his never let up Boston bro business focused attitude

He’s been mired in plenty of controversies, of being racist, sexist, anti-unions, having various feuds with a bunch of different people, the business insider stuff… Again, many people love him, and many people also hate him. Those people disagree on how they view him - guess what, that’s literally the definition of controversial. P.S. notice that I mentioned absolutely nothing about politics or about his love of Trump.
