- Jon Ordon knows he could have had a comfortable life if he’d stayed as a chartered accountant. But there was something about listening to vinyl records that drew him in. Three decades later, he has a collection of more than 200,000 records at his home in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.

I've been collecting records for over 20 years and I've amassed a collection of around 800. So 200,000 is just mind blowing.
From a fellow record collector, this is another level and really great. One of a kind operator. Hats off to you Jon!
Ask him to find a particular record it will take him another 20 years to find it.
I can relate to your story and what it's like. I've been a music lover my whole life and a record collector for about 40+ years with around 10,000 albums. And Jon is right when he says you don't build a collection like that overnight.
It would take over 15 years to listen to them all if they were played non stop, one after the other.
This is why I think it's absolutely pointless having that many records.
Unless he's trying to sell them.... which I think he is.
Obsession is an unhealthy affliction.
Since the closure of Ashwoods in the 90s, Jon has been the king of records. He just needs to open a small shop in Penrith!!!!
Thats not a collection, that's inventory.
legend
Truly inspirational I enjoy the concept about selling them. I don’t get access to a local record store and any fetes fairs or record swaps are almost non existent in Reigonal areas so the idea someone like this comes to town really is outstanding. To see what you’re buying in this field is pretty damn good. Unfortunately more than ever there are few too many schonkys on places like the Cogs
Jon seems awesome!
I collected as a teen, then jumped to the the CD trek, then back to vinyl in 2017. Up to 2700 now - doubt I'd ever make it to such a huge collection. Would love to dig thru his stock for sure though. So much undiscovered music.
I saw Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Good Son lp standing against cardboard box. Cheers from Finland!
I thought 200 records is too much. Impressive work Jon 👍
ha! love this. I also live in the Blue mountains and I just bought a quite a few records off Jon at the latest record fair in Orange. Excellent collection and wow does he know his stuff.
at 2 albums per hour 24 hours a day, I think it would take him 11 years to listen to every album.
Casually drops “Herman Kelly dance to the drummers beat” at the end 🙌🏻
Yeah. That song never gets old. If u like that,u will probably love Marlena Shaw- Liberation Conversation. Just thought I’d share the love.
@@boswollox4636 yep Richard Evan’s & Charles Stepney can’t go wrong! Love Marlena
Where were his Sydney stores in the 2000s?
West Ryde then Hornsby then Erskenville. They are the ones that I used to go to at the time, and then there’s Glenbrook!
I have bought some of his used vinyl
From various outlets
It is on the more expensive end of the curve
But the condition and quality of both the cover and more importantly the record is usually very good
👍
As Uncle Terry says all the time.... It's about "condition, condition condition "!!!
Such an interesting hobby and collection I still collect movies on blu ray dvd and in 4K
Wonderful. I love collecting vinyl records.
I might have some you would like
Great Story and funny shirt😀
ive got 3000 lol,and still growing ,..
I started collecting in the 1980s and at my peak had around 5000. But really, I can understand 200 000 as leftover record shop inventory but keep it and and collecting to that degree is probably mental illness and should not be encouraged. There is a strong cross-over between collecting and hoarding behaviours.
Spot on, it becomes the attaining something rather than buying it after a while, and you end up with loads of stuff you will never play.
I would rather have a collection of say 50 albums that I actually play lol.
won't the vinyl albums warp in that warehouse?
I also saw a video about a collector of 8-track tapes. He has over 93,000 of them.
Love
Collecting is fun, but it can take a hold of you.
Miss Jon, Box Hiil fairs were even better when Jon turned up with his boxes interesting material
I love my vinyl but this is just madness....he will NEVER play all those LP's. Never.
You`re another one who missed the point completely,he bought those records for peanuts when everyone only wanted CDs and sold their vinyl for a pittance, and now he`s selling them back for heaps of cash now vinyl is back in demand.....Durrrrr
looks thorens td 124 turntable. wow he must be busy collecting vinyls for long time. lots of driving going places everyday.
Major record companies must think they are in Sales heaven, people gave away their records to buy CDs when they hit the market - now people are giving away their CDs and buying records again. Customers actually believe that their 180 gm, remastered, virgin vinyl record they paid $70+ for sounds better - because the record company told them it does!
Yep the price of new stuff is generally ridiculous.
40 quid for one album?I think not.
I could probably flick through every single record there
Nice
Juno Records London. Have my house deposit and the rest. I love my records ! ❤
2:05 Ah yes, no record fair is complete without Mr or Mrs 'I.M. Predictable' guarding with his or her life that copy of 'Rumours'..
Does he sell online?
Yes…John has a Discogs store.
Discogs.
With the revival of records, he is having the last laugh, a story of listening your heart always. 😁😁
What is there to laugh about?
@@abrielle13 Whooooosssshhh.....He`s sitting on a goldmine now
Cool tee shirt !
You never know who is looking for what! I've been in urban areas looking for rarer soul and it's been picked through. I've been to east coast stores who were light on jazz Lps at the time. I've been to the upper mid west and found numerous obscure soul artists on cd.
throw another wreck chord on the barbie
✌🏾😎
Cool 👍
Me in a few years
Sad thing is you can't take it with you when you're dead you're dead.
Nive one.
What’s the point of having that many. I doubt he’ll ever get around to listening to them all.
Are you serious??
@@mjh5437Yeah it's pathetic, it is mental illness
Yeah, but has he got Morcheeba Who Can You Trust original press?
Had that and gave it away...
If you want to get rip of your 80s 90s 12'inch, pm me witrh price please.
They suck!! CD is superior.
Stupid comment David, but CDs are an important media..., still!
actually you're wrong, Vinyls music are much superior than CD music
@@jglg7238 I generally find the people who say vinyl sounds better than CDs have a vested interest in vinyl - they have a large vinyl collection or sell vinyl
