It takes a little while to setup your Landscape Painting Material - But, once you've got it, the actual painting process is pretty simple :)
    Hope that helps!!

For anyone finding this using version 5.5, to get the layers to appear now as shown at 1:02, you should see a new button on the Layers tab that says "Create Layers From Assigned Materials". It should be right next to another button that isn't present in this version that says "Create Layer."
The layers should appear now. From there you still activate them as shown in the video by assigning a weight blend.
I hope this helps anyone as confused as I was.

People should be aware there's also a whole setup where you can change what brush gets painted based on altitude, slope, etc etc etc. It's pretty complicated, but if you're making large landscapes, it's worth learning to set up. I'm not sure if RS is planning to cover that, but "unreal auto landscape material" should find long-winded rambling tutorials about it.

    • @GerardMenvussa

Sounds like a must-have for landscapes, especially if you are aiming for a realistic art style.

Sounds like something that should be provided by default like other engines figured out long ago.

It looks handy but it won't work for me. I've followed RS 2 min tutorial for auto materials click by click for 2 hours and it just doesn't work in UE 5.3. All the other tutorials are like you said, long winded and rambling to the point they forget to teach. Gonna have to do without it. If there is a better one, maybe I'll find it.

Folks watching this for UE 5.3: if you get an issue where the material is all black and you can't actually see the layers in the Paint > Target Layers > Layers section, you need to name each layer in the Material Graph for your new material.
    1. Click on the Landscape Layer Blend you made.
    2. Open each Index in the Layers section, and put in a Layer Name.
    3. Do this for every Index in your layer.
    4. Duplicate the Layer Blend and follow the video to set them up for Base Color and Normal.
After this you should be able to see the materials in the layer and continue to adding LayerInfo for each of them.

If anyone is experances crashes when connecting the Normal and Texture maps on the graph to the Layer Blend a fix that worked for me is to have an increased texture streaming poolsize. The command you'd want to use in the console command on the bottom left is r.streaming.poolsize [IMPORTANT] (input the amount of VRAM inside of your GPU as I have 24gb I put in 24000, if you have 8gb then you do 8000) so for me the command I will write would be r.streaming.poolsize 24000. I hope this helps anyone that's had this issue when using 8k textures or a lot of materials.

the only issue is the tiling. The tiling doesnt work preoperly doing this. IT jsut zooms in on the material. So most materials used will look bad basically zooming in on 1 tile and making it the entire landscape. So it may jsut be 2 huge leaves instead of highly detailed numerous leaves per tile
