      My grammar high school teacher withstood The Siege at Khe Sahn, although he was a very disciplined man, he was also gentle and funny, We once asked him how was The War, he only said "guys I do not want to talk about it but it is hell on earth". One of his frequent phrases was "Thanks God for closet air!" ( Support I Guess? ) He died before his time, quite young as I see it now in his early 40s, because of The cáncer. May he RIP. All you Guys who went to VietNam are heroes, for me.

      @@todmann67 Both of you are correct technically. Khe Sanh has been described as a microcosm of the Vietnam War as immediately after winning the battle the marines were told to evacuate and abandon the post to the enemy.

    • @USN1985dos
      @USN1985dos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually it was kind of the opposite. What should have been an obvious loss (an isolated base, cut off and 28 miles from the nearest friendlies) was able to survive and fend off a substantially larger force for a prolonged period of time because of the US war machine which used air power to hammer any amassing forces, helicopters to evacuate the wounded, and air supply to constantly provide the base with medical equipment, food, water, and ammunition.
      It's unlikely the any other nation on Earth at the time could have accomplished what the US war machine did there.
      Oh, and then the siege was broken when 20,000 air cav troopers & Marines fought their way to Khe Sanh.

  • @ramal5708
    @ramal5708 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The fact is, the battle itself was a PAVN feint to lure large amount of US troops from Tet Offensive '68 areas near and around the coast and then the PAVN artillery and guns surrounding the base would bombard the American troops daily and inflict casualties.
    The PAVN didn't even prioritized in capturing the base like they did against the French at Dien Bien Phu, if an assault is not viable they would never try to launch major assault on the base with many NVA troops.

    • @williamsherman1942
      @williamsherman1942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ramal, they did try to take it. A lot of PAVN generals were against it, but one general was for it and so it happened. Obviously the assault failed because Murica, but nonetheless they were successful at the US Military focusing resources on Khe Sanh instead of the Tet offensive which also failed but nonetheless it caused people to question the war back home even more and people though we won the battle felt like it was useless to keep fighting at that point.

      I once saw a very memorable scene on a documentary in which a film crew was interviewing a Douglas Skyraider pilot as he was strafing enemy soldiers. Где же злобные комментарии о миллионах погибших во Вьтнаме мирных жителей? Или американские демократические бомбы и напалм убивают как то более добро чем советские? Они ведь убили даже больше чем советы в Афгане - где же борцы за свободы?

      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khe_Sanh
      They broke the seige, but pretty much lost the battle. The US giving up Khe Sanh basically broke the McNamara line, allowing better infiltration and extending NVA communication.
