  • Today we're looking at the 144 by ‪@tarkaudio‬. It's "Tape Machine Emulator" and what that means is it's something of a preamp based on the circuitry of an old cassette tape machine. It's got a JFET preamp and an active 2-band EQ that can be pushed into extreme overdrive and distortion, much like overloading a mixing channel strip. In this demo, I briefly run through some of the sounds, and show off some of my favorite settings.
Aside from the vintage-inspired aesthetic and the functional VU meter, the 144 packs a lot into some straightforward controls. The TRIM knob has a vast range, from slight grit to absolute sonic distortion, and there is a switchable input impedance: go from HI-Z (what guitars like) to LO-Z (like plugging direct into a mixing board) to approximate some different sounds. Also note, the HI or LO selection works best if the pedal sees the direct signal from your guitar: buffers before negate this difference. The "Saturating Dynamics Circuit" sits between the JFET and the EQ section in the audio path, and when switched on, it emulates old cassette machines' noise reduction compander. What that means is that it sort of acts like a compressor and a noise gate at the same time. Hard to explain in words, but you'll hear in the demo pretty clearly what it does.
There is also an internal trim pot to adjust the bias of the JFET (I think anyway), but I didn't bother to play with it because I thought it sounded great as is. You can feel free to explore if you'd like (or check out the other demo by ‪@PedalExperiments‬ for an example of it. ‪@boringgearreviews‬ also has a great demo of the 144.
Check out TARK AUDIO's website at tarkaudio.com/... to learn more about this lovely little device and to pre-order your own! Please note this is NOT a paid demo: I purchased this with my own money and decided to make this demo on my own accord: as such, it is very particular to my rig and works for my playing style. Your experience may differ, but that being said, I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a good and inspiring sound in this device!
The signal chain is simple: my OOPEGG Trailbreaker Mark-I into the 144 out into the front of my Marshal DSL1 and out into my recording interface. There is a slight reverb added from my DAW, but beyond that you're just hearing the pedal.
