- Today in the Plan to Can Collaboration i am steam canning sloppy joe sauce starter
It’s like opening your home preserved can of manwich!
This a recipe from the ball book of canning and is a sauce only recipe ,no meat , that is why it can be water bathed or steam canned ,
Note- ball has updated this to 1 c of apple cider vinegar from 1/2 c - I did email them and they replied if this is canned with 1/2 c ( 5 percent acidity ) it is still shelf stable
I do have a pressure canning sloppy joe video that contains meat in my playlist

Thank you, Beth, for sharing your experience with us.
Great instructions! Thanks for the video and inspiration.
This is what I love about these Collaborations. In looking in the canning book I probably would not thought to make it. But seeing you prepare it I know that this would be a great addition to have on the pantry shelf. Its quick, flexible for other recipes and you can use a variety of vegetables, and us singles could put .in a small jars. Thank for bring this to our attention.
This comment is so spot on ! I leaf through my books quite a bit and say , oh want to can that , but never do ,,,, that’s what I love about winter canning , I try new things , small batches and it is so fun and satisfying! Thank you so much for your comment and watching 😊
I am going to make this it looks so yummy. I love a good old sloppy Joe ❤😊
I'm enjoying this collaboration and the different recipes from everyone. There is alot of variety with this collaboration and I am really liking the condiment ones especially. Thanks for a fairly simple recipe and showing everything thoroughly.!!
Thank you for watching im glad you are enjoying the collaboration!
Most fabulous recipe. My daughter loves sloppy Joe. This recipe is great. I'll make it and send it to her. She'll love it. Thanks for the video.😊
Yes! One of our favorite home canned products! I never liked sloppy joes until I made it homemade and now we have the pretty often! This is definitely one everyone should be canning!
Thank you so much , my hubby loves sloppy joes !
Thank you for the collaboration. Learning new recipes.😊
Thank you for tuning in !
Thanks for the great idea! I'm canning up a bunch of things for my daughter who is a teacher with two little ones, trying to make her life easier and keep them eating real food.
Oh, thank you so much for showing us this recipe for manwich sauce! It looks so good that I just have to give it a try! Thanks so much for this collaboration!
Thank you so much for watching 😊
Your Sloppy Joe sauce looks amazing. I'm definitely adding it to my to do list for future canning. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with all of us.
Thank you Laura !
This Sloppy Joe mix looks good! I think the mustard is the secret ingredient! Thank you!
I agree ! For me it’s the grey poupon ! Just kidding ! 😂 thank you for watching 😊
I have never made this recipe yet but I do have the book. I think my little grandsons would enjoy this when they visit. Thanks for your video.
Thank you so much for watching!
The grand babies are everything ! 🥰
I've pressure canned beefy sloppy joes but never thought about just canning the dauce. Great video😊
Can’t wait to try this. I’m super excited to try your recipe for the one with canned meat!! Many in my family from south canned meat. I have especially loved the hamburger. The last generation got away from canning meat so nobody has the recipe. I’m going to check your links and other videos. Thanks.
We don't normally like sloppy joes, but I think my whole family would like these!
It can be used for so many things also , with pasta , as a meatloaf glaze and so much more , I like using on chicken and baking with cheese on top too !
Really nice recipe👌🏻👌🏻Love that❤❤
Thank you for watching 😊
This looks great! Thanks for the recipe! A good addition to the shelf.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video. I love how you took us through step by step and offered tips on so many things. We love sloppy joes. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe and your awesome guidance.
Thanks so much!
This is awesome!!! I don't have sloppy Joe's often because of all the garbage in it. But with this recipe I can jeep it on the shelf for a quick go-to meal when other things don't work out!!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank u so much for watching I’m glad you enjoyed it !😊
This looks yummy. Thanks for the video and the tips. ❤
Thank you for watching!
I would always get heartburn from the store bought stuff and I make my own, but it would be so nice to have it ready to make a quick meal.
Thank for sharing and now I’m going to put this on my canning list.
Have a blessed weekend!
Peppers give me heartburn sometimes too ! Lol thanks for watching!
We love sloppy joes and this is a great idea thanks for sharing...
Thank you for watching!
I have been wanting to make and can Sloppy Joe base for a long time now. I prefer making my own instead of the commercial product but having it canned on my shelf would be so convenient. Thanks for sharing.
This looks and sounds like a winner. I have a Steam Canner on my long wish list. 😊
Maybe you will win it , good luck and thank you for watching!
Sloppy Joes are one of my favorites. Great to have on your shelf. Boy I need a steam canner. I need one in my old age, water bath canning is hard to move. Thanks
It really is heavy ! Maybe you’ll win one , good luck 🍀 thank you for watching!
Thank you for doing this recipe, I do have the Ball Canning Book but, as with the other canning recipes I am more inspired when I see someone actually make it! I have used the Mrs. Wages Sloppy Jo mix for canning prior to this. Test time!
Cooking for one, I think I will just check out your pressure canned Sloppy Joe recipe. But as one commenter mentioned, it’s nice to see you prepare something I wouldn’t have thought to, from a book I already own 😊
That looks like it would make some yummy sloppy Joe's. Thank you for sharing.
We sloppy Joe’s a lot. Thank you for putting this video out. I am going to do it.
This looks great and I just got the book too! Thank you...I love sloppy joes. I can't wait to try this.
Thank you for watching!
Sloppy Joe Sauce is a must have item in my pantry...so convenient! I also make it in a 1/2 pint for my Gma. She loves having it for a small meal when she is too tired to make something. Blessings from Minnesota!
Yes 1/2 pints would be perfect ! Thank you for watching!
I have this book now I need to try this recipe
It would be great for those nights when you need dinner quick.
Hi Kate ! Thank you for watching!
That looks yummy. We love sloppy joes. Need to try this.
Thank you for watching!
This looks so good. I love thick and creamy sauces
Thank you for watching Sharon !
This is on my list of things to try... thanks for sharing with us!
Hey hey ! Thank you for stopping in ❤️
I love your plate and I love sloppy joes.
Thank you so much ! The plates are too cute right ! I found them at the goodwill store 25 cents a piece!
This is a good meat starter. I like to can my pork plain, as well as my beef… so this would be perfect! Thanks for sharing!
Yes just open a jar of either and add this in ! It’s good with fresh ground turkey too ( not canned of course )
Yum, that looks really good. We like sloppy Joe so I need to add this to my list. Thanks for sharing this recipe with us.
Thank you for watching teresa! 😊
I'll bet the mustard gives it a unique flavor. This is something we will be putting on the shelf.
I will definitely be trying this Thanks for taking part in this collaboration
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing this vedio
Thank you for watching!
Love sloppy Joe’s but never thought to can the sauce. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching! My husband loves manwich so this was a great alternative!
I love sloppy joes. I have not made any in a couple years. Need to get more on the shelves. Thank you for the video
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video! I've been wanting to do this forever! You've inspired me to get it done!
Thank you so much for watching Kathi !
This would be so helpful to have on the shelf and to know exactly the ingredients and not unwanted preservatives. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Another one that I need to try.
Thank you for watching
good video - so handy to have on hand !!
Sure is ! Thank you so much for watching!
I read several comments here and find it helpful to what is practical for my situation. I think this would be tasty on meatloaf, maybe mostly cooked before adding sauce. Also I like to see a recipe demonstrated. Thank you.
yes it can be used many ways
I like it on chicken with cheese and in pasta , think about it the ingredients are the same as many pasta sauces 😊thank you for watching
Thank you! I like sloppy joes wish my husband liked it. Maybe he would if it’s homemade lol
I hope so!
great video my shopping list keeps growing LOL
lol 😂 thanks for watching
Enjoyed your video
Thank you for watching nana I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊
I've got to try this-I've looked at this and skipped it, thanks!
This would work great with venison. Yummy 😋
It definitely would ! I have a freezer full too !
Beth thanks for the sloppy joe sauce. I don't like to pressure can meat & tomato products much bc ot tends to scorch the tomatoes. I canned many jars of ground beef again last weekend so this would be great to have to use the beef! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!
Yes I love to add to my canned beef or sausage ! Thank you for watching!
My Husband will only eat home canned Sloppy Joe now. He said not to buy that stuff in the store anymore. Thanks for sharing.
I plan to can this recipe - I've had it on my radar for several months but I just haven't gotten to it as I've been working on beans and/or meat. I'll probably get to it when the garden is giving me tomatoes to turn into sauce.
Having stuff on the shelf should remind us there is no reason we can turn our heads to a hungry soul. Bless those you can with what we have been blessed with. Sometimes, I like something different and this looks good. Plus I can control salt. I really am not a person fond of salt so it would easier then store bought for sure.
I totally agree ! Preservatives too on the store purchased ! Thank you for watching! 😊
That recipe is so close to the sauce in my grandmother's BBQ beef recipe! At least the amounts look the same. She didn't can it because she always made it for a crowd and leftovers rarely happened. And this has measurements. Hers has handfuls, spoonfuls, and tea cupfuls lol. It was always whose hand, which spoon, and what teacup.
lol , I’m sure it was tasty ! Thank you for watching!
We occasionally have the store bought stuff but I’m sure this’ll be far superior in taste and nutrition.
For sure ! Thank you for watching
Looks awesome! Can you set up a stream canner like you can a water bath canner if you do not have the actual piece of equipment?
That is a question I cannot answer at all
I have added a steam canner to my wish list. I have one of the big blue ones and filling and emptying is a chore. Getting older has made it even harder. Love sloppy Joe so must give this a try. Thanks
Yes definitely getting harder to dump a huge water bath canner plus the water waste is quite measurable!
The sauce looks fabulous, how does it compare to the "store brand"?
I don’t buy them so I’m not sure , my hubby always liked manwich and he likes it
Here we like hamburger bbq aka sloppy joes with brown sugar and ketchup lol
Thank you for watching
Heads up! Ball changed the amount of apple cider vinegar on their web site and in later versions of that book to 1 cup. I have the older version and I made this recipe. I used all but 1 jar when it was brought to my attention. I've made the correction in my book.
Thank you for letting me know
I contacted ball for the reason for the newer measurements or if it’s a website typo , and I’ll get back to you
To be honest another 1/2 c , it’s a 4 pint recipe would make the recipe inedible- it’s very vinegar forward at the 1/2 c
But I’ll let you know the answer
I’ve made this many time so I know it’s safe , if that helps
Dear Beth,
Thank you for taking the time to contact Fresh Preserving. We truly appreciate your interest in our products.
I understand your concern. After new testing, they decide to use the 1 cup of apple cider vinegar instead of the 1/2 cup. If you previously canned this recipe using the 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, it is still shelf stable. Have a great weekend.
If I can be of further assistance, please reply to this email directly so that we can see all previous replies.
It has been my pleasure assisting you! You may receive a brief survey about your experience with me. Thank you in advance for any feedback you may provide.
Sincerely,
Donna

Here is the reply ,
again
If the recipe called for more acv
I personally think it would be inedible , the current recipe is very vinegar forward
My advice is do my meat recipe in my playlist , lol
Thank you for sharing
I agree that 1 cup of ACV seems to be a lot. I only made this recipe the one time. Of the 4 pints we have used 3, and we're still around. I have to say I am impressed that you received a response so quickly. That always speaks volumes. Thank you for sharing that with us.@@TheMillerLifeKitchen
We enjoy sloppy Joes but I've been to cheap to buy the tinned stuff. Now, making my own. Oh, I just watched your vid with meat in it - I miss venison and will can a bunch of it when burger goes on sale again.
Just do ground beef for now when it goes on sale , that’s what I do also ,,, but it’s delicious with venison ! Thank you for watching
@@TheMillerLifeKitchen I wish for venison and antelope - healthiest meat around.
We love manwiches. I definitely have to try this recipe. To start out with would you recommend water bath or steam canner?
If your starting out to get started just use a pot with a rack in the bottom and a lid - you probably already have that , very affordable! Steam canners have cost but are not that expensive depending on your budget - work with what you have and upgrade - I used a pot for many years!
I have videos with using just a pot just for this reason - anyone can do it as long as it’s a safe water bath recipe !
While I think this is a brilliant idea to can, I will go to the extra work and pressure can your meat version, for I am one of those lazy cooks that really doesn't want to spend a ton of time cooking dinner, if I can put in the work during my canning sessions!
I agree lol 😂
For the peppers, I don’t really like green peppers. Can you substitute for other peppers? And how close does this taste compared to manwich?
You can substitute different peppers but for safety use the same measurements
Thank you for watching!
How does this taste compared to actual store bought Manwich?
To be honest I haven’t had manwich in years but my hubby was a huge fan so I made this for him - he loves it ! Let it mellow for a few because straight away the vinegar is strong - it has a zip and taste is great
Hope that helps !
Just to update you since my video
The new ball book calls for more vinegar - however I did contact them about already canned sloppy joe sauce and they stated this is still safe and shelf stable
I have this book but I can not find the recipe in it. Can someone please give me the page number. I have the 2024 print, hopefully it’s in there somewhere.
New ball book has an updated r3cipe
This would be so helpful to have on the shelf and to know exactly the ingredients and not unwanted preservatives. Thank you!
