I once met Chu Shong Tin at an event in San Francisco some of my students were participating in. He was allowing people to Chi Sau with him, so I stepped up. I got the impression I was touching hands with an extraterrestrial or an angel from heaven.

+Dirkjan - the fact I see your comments everywhere bashing on all types of WC is probably a bit more cringe to be honest with you. This type of WC is in my opinion the only wing chun that works, being based of structure, making it superior to any other type of WC. This was the way WC was intended to be and passed down through Yip man, to Chu Shong Tin. Also having touched hands with Chu, being a pretty muscular guy, I had no doubt I could stop that skinny 70 year old chinese man from doing movements that shouldn't be possible with x2 the muscle power. I've already explained a lot of crap to you like over a year ago, and I suggested you go to hong kong and touch with any of Chu shong tins students, or come down to australia and try your luck with me, as I'm fortunate enough to be a student to one of Chu's best students. Sadly, nobody on this planet is even close to what Chu could do, that man was a true superhuman. This way of moving and being is not easy to do, this is why Bruce lee failed to adopt wing chun entirely, and thus closed the gaps which are presented by using wing chun in a muscular way, which there are a fucking lot of gaps.

No, he was known for accepting any challenges that Ip mans school had though as he was the senior instructor who basically taught all of Ip mans students besides the 2 who trained under Ip before him, and apparently he didn't even get hit once, and a fight didn't ever last long. Ip man was also quoted saying that Chu Shong Tin had surpassed him in both skill and thought-force generation, and thus Ip man crowned Chu the title of "King of Sil Nim Tao", Ip man did not give that title to him and him alone for no good reason I can assure you of that.
When I studied under him he liked doing Chi Sau with his students, he would always just defend and neutralize the other persons attacks, he did this so well, that the moment you and him were in contact with each other, even if only your arm was touching his arm, you lost all control over your balance, it was almost like he had control of your balance, he became one with you and somehow it felt like he would move you through the inside of you. Trust me when I say, I thought I was a powerful muscly guy, but sure enough his structure could hold my weight and every inch of force my muscles could generate and toss me across the room if he wanted.
I threw a proper punch at him towards the end of my stay in Hong Kong, as I wanted to see if he could take my balance off just blocking/making contact with a quick jab, instead he said it wasn't necessary and proceeded to just punch through my punch. One, when he did that, it broke my structure and I toppled down but most importantly, he nearly broke my arm in the process from merely being in touch with it and crashing through it with his arm. I couldn't move my arm for over a week without being in intense amounts of pain.
I can provide a couple of videos a friend of mine, Nima has filmed and created his YT Channel around.
Here is one of Chu playing around with another ip man student: th-cam.com/video/-u7nAWevDVU/w-d-xo.html
Here is one similar to what he did to my arm, the sort of hitting through an arm to the center with no hope of the person stopping him, and it doing a huge amount of damage: th-cam.com/video/prpt25hpOQk/w-d-xo.html
Here is one of Chu's realistic fighting videos, as in how things from forms apply to a fight: th-cam.com/video/PbDXTBxt7II/w-d-xo.html
If you require something specific in a video just ask, I'll try my best to provide, and if there's nothing on YT for that specific thing, I'll dig through my recordings from when I was in HK and will try to find something out of those for you.
      All the best.

Found another that is pretty good, this guy uses a very similar method, one of the two ancient wing chun 'engines' which just means your body is an engine of some sort so you move or what not different ways, Chu's wing chun uses Lik power, whereas this guy is using Gin power, he's the only guy I've seen on YT who does, and this one is a good one to show you if you watch the whole thing you'll see how fast he is it's ridiculous haha. Hope you enjoy it if you watch it and finally become a chunner :P

"You have to use your mind to let all that stay turned-off when you move. And it's against our instinct because we want to have power, feels like there'll be no power, we don't trust it. But with practice you can learn to trust it." Great quote. Feel like it goes for politics as well--not giving into the desire to force and control but just learn to relax and trust ourselves.

The weight (chi, what ever you wish to call it) sinking reminds me of the little bit of akido I did. Always was drilled in my mind 1. Keep one point, 2. relax completely, 3.weight underside, 4. Extend your ki/chi. Did a small amount of WC after jkd and presas Arnis for about 8 years (or so). Always was fascinated in the internal concept jkd didn't Incorporate as much (not lacking just didn't build on it as much at that time). Great stuff and great information. Maybe one day I'll touch hands with john.

I must admit after learning the William cheung base Wingchun through a master that left him in NYC. I had to learn strictly by watching...then you do it...Huh? Sifu kaufman so thoroughly explains the concepts. I had to kind of...just do it... and figure out as I go. In my Masters defense I think back then in the 1990s, there were alot of Looky loos.. guys that come in for a week or a month and leave because they couldnt take the work outs. thank you sifu kaufman for finally explaining things I did for years...but not knowing exactly why. lol

  • @perrypelican9476

Kieran, you will be a very effective martial arts practitioner after not many years because you are probably training a lot and every time you discover a better method, you use it. Please don't stop doing these videos. I wish you would talk about your personal training. Maybe 1 video per week talking only about where you are personally at with you training. You are a huge source of great knowledge because of how open you are to everyone you interview. I learned from this Kaufman guy the importance of totally changing the way you move. The most powerful fighter will be the one using internals naturally and instinctively. The more you give in to instinctive muscle tensing, the easier you will be to beat in a fight, especially against an opponent who uses internals.

@18:30 about which "gear" starts first... this one took me a long time to wrap my head around simply because I'm so used to the idea of gathering energy in the "Dan Tien" and then release the energy like a wave.
We see it often too in lots of movies and mainstream media about gathering our chi/ki/chakra/energy from our stomach and exploding it out.
There was so far, only one Japanese anime (Jujutsu Kaizen) that actually, explicitly addressed gathering energy at the "Dan Tien" as the hero's limiting factor and instead to treat the whole body as one engine to release the energy all at once.

HE'S RIGHT even though he explains it his way. the biggest thing is for us to get out of our own way. this first has to happen in our hearts, then our minds and physical limbs/body. when we feel these changes then we start to trust it as he says. we trust the process that becomes natural and can be spontaneous/intentional depending on our skill.

  • @JKDVIPER

Watched that whole thing again. I use similar methods in my jkd. Instead of feeling your arm to unleash internal Kung fu to mess up your structure. I hop off my back foot and drive a flying vertical fist into your chest or chin depending on where you put your hands. So, I see commonality here. Messing up the guys structure from any angle. That’s why I tuned in because sometimes I might face a bigger more dangerous body type. So to relax and sneaky throw off his structure is a gain to me. 💥💯🥊

The problem is when a master tells there students to relax, they relax like a noodle.. that’s not the true relaxation.. your body is like a popsicle, your bones and skeleton are the stick, everything else is the popsicle, when you relax your bones are strong but you allow gravity to melt everything away.. eventually your bones will become very strong, when you touch a master that is relaxing it should not feel soft it should feel very solid like iron.. in my opinion... I’ve touched hands with many people that get the wrong idea of relaxing and are like a noodle.. this is the wrong idea..

I like the "gear" explanation. It's kinda make sense even though I'm far from being able to do it. Thank you Shifu.

“ motion in stillness, stillness in motion” that’s a direct quote from master Wang of yiquan fame. It’s been borrowed by everyone. It’s great that here is presented some aspects of the conditions required to embody Jin. Gravity is a tool for life as it is obviously present in all motion, but without an immediate teaching of lifting,( afterall a gravity only body is a puddle on the ground), there is this strange condition of immobilized martial man. The internal teaching is sitting feeling and “ ba di yu fey” ,( the Birds cannot fly away), this unifies the body and gives the heavy body that can fly anywhere. United in heaven and earth, the floating center. Many Wing chun practioners miss that because of the nature of their art is to “ sit back”. The is a Sifu in HK that is very deep into wc and yiquan, sifu Li

What he's describing in the way of power from Chu Shong Tin or his advanced student sound very much like the power of a highly advanced Tai Chi Chuan master who can utilize jin power in all its forms--that is, internal energy power.

It seems that you got way "higher level" of understanding then I see in Mindfull wing chun school. They can tap into this internal engine lighly but not as much as you do. And both of you come from MG CST. It would be nice to hear about the training methods you use to teach your students. It would be a shame if CST heritage got lost...

I practice taijiquan, and it's so true that when you do it right you feel nothing, and at first you totally call bs. What's this? How does it even work? Don't really know how it works but it does feel like that. Pengjin.

ahhhh you finally found someone to teach you. I was waiting for this Martial man. Im gonna be leaving ALOT of comments hahaha but i learned this without a sifu. Unfortunately I have no access to any training. Makes no difference, I wish to touch hands with Sifu Kaufman very much. To see what I have truly taught myself. You see, relaxation is not what we are taught. And you sir martial man, only know of hardness. Every time you ask questions of masters, you ask only of hardness. But here you have the truth of the power of yourself and chi. Chi sau. See it there before you? Softness. This is WHY wing chun cannot be overcome. Why it is the simplest and most effective system. You do not wish to learn sensitivity, because most martial arts believe themselves to be "tough". EVERYTHING you do is HARD. That is IN YOUR MIND. Where ALL internal arts start. The body is not a thing, the mind is all there is. You can not adapt to anything in hard style. We can talk all we wish, til you can experience what this man is teaching you. It will not make any sense to your mind. It simply shows how FAR out of contact you actually are with your body. A tip. Never ask a sifu a question with the answer already in your mind. That is hard style. Instead, ask with the intent to understand something you do not yet grasp and words will never be enough to explain them to you. When you can truly win by doing nothing. And I mean that literally, you will not understand soft style. There is no paradox. Thank you again for bringing us all the masters!! Their work is so critical to all our developments and are some of the greatest people we have!! BLESS!!!

My other comment is long. Its so good to see you finally becoming sensitive to your internals. This is also what happens in Aikido. You are stuck to him. He to you. YOU are one. There is no separation. Hardness separates. Softness incorporates.
