    Worth mentioning (as someone who learnt this from scratch this week!) that how well focused the drop makes the flower us based mainly on the distance between drop and flower, and how round the drop is. Comparing the shape of your three drops and the image in them actually highlights this better than you could have planned it!
    Good video though, wish you had done it last week as I pretty much had to stumble blindly through multiple tutorials and articles and videos, scraping tidbits together to figure it all out! LOL

    Super video! Was actually just playing with this myself earlier today but was using my new ring flash. The flash works great, but it does of course give reflections in the water drops. Didn't even think about using a longer shutter speed #gettingold. I do however have problems getting larger and rounder water drops, do you put something in the water? And getting the refraction in proper focus is also a problem. It's distance from drop to whatever you want refracted that is the issue there I guess, will have to experiment some more with that. As usual the bloopers made me grin. :-P I'm totally getting Don's book, backed and waiting for December!

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Torbjorn, I sometimes put glycerin in my water at a 50/50 ratio. it helps to make bigger drops that last longer and can help it to stick to objects. I believe you can also use corn syrup. Practice and experiment are a great way to learn and to find out new ways of doing things.

    • @StewartWoodArt

It was either the drop or the flower. Perhaps I need to continue experimenting with the distances of the flower to drop and drop to lens.

    Hello, I have a small question to ask you. can we do this with a 40mm f2.8 for example?

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should think you can, most lenses should be able to get a picture of some sort. Its just depends on how close you can get/want to get to the subject.

      The focus distance is 0.163 m

    Is a ring light better than a speed flash??

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are as good as each other but they will produce different reflection/spectacular highlights. which one you like is up to you. I prefer the a diffused speed light over a ring flash.

      @@StewartWoodArt pro tip: if you don't want weird ring flash reflections in the droplet, put the ring off camera, closer to the subject to that the droplets are basically "inside" the ring. Most of the light will fall to the background, lighting in the droplets while putting the foreground in silhouette with no catch lights in the droplets. :)

      Awesome tip Don, thank you. I'll try that next time :)

      @@StewartWoodArt I've done some setups where the ring flash is the exclusive light for the background flower and there is a secondary light source for the foreground. Most of my setups are a single light design, but this combination works nicely as well!

    Love the idea and the video. However when I tried it with a bit of grass from my garden the drops of water wouldn't stay or form. Even pre spray didn't help. It seems the grass has a water repellant coating on it. Any suggestions?

    I sure will check Don’s book, however are you planning on making a book of your own, just the spiders alone are worth an exhibit. Thank you so much for the contact, you convinced me to buy a 50mm for my d800 with a revers ring. All the best. Eli from Israel.
