Install a Barn Owl nest box. With fewer rabbits and rodents there is less reason for coyote to roam your property. With fewer rodents you will have fewer hosts for ticks and viruses.

I have all three. Apples seem to be the best, with pear a close second. Make sure they are late droppers.

the persimmon trees you're planting are American persimmon, right...?i found an American persimmon tree on my 10 acres about 2 years ago & was shocked....i saw a persimmon on the ground or i'd still not know what that tree is....but now that i know what it looks like, clearing that hillside of tall cedars & brush, i've found around 10 American persimmon trees....1 ft tall to 20' tall.....i've cut all the other trees back, so these trees get sunlight all day now.....& also bought 3 Jiro persimmon trees, & planted them w/ 2 Kieffer pear trees....this hillside, going up, the ground is rocky, so for the chestnuts i'll probably have to go w/ raised beds.....but, i want it to work so i'll do a good job....thanks for all of your great ideas.....

What species of apple, pear, persimmons, and dustan chestnut species would you recommend in central Arkansas

Arkansas Black and Arkansaw. Both drop late Oct/Nov-ish and will pollinate each other. Plus they are awesome apples.

Kieffer pear....& Jiro persimmon trees....the Jiro Persimmon trees don't get as tall as the American persimmon trees do but that's a good thing as it's easier to pick the fruit, & the fruit is a LOT larger than the American, & it's NON-astringent, so you can pick it & eat it like an apple if you want to ...or dehydrate them & freeze them....taste GREAT....

I planted fruit tree first, then wanted to plant some chestnuts, after watching a LOT of videos on youtube, some say, just buy Chinese Chestnut trees as they're basically the same tree, only a lot cheaper....one video the guy said, he has both, Chinese & Dunstan & he can't tell them apart....they both flower at the exact same time....he said he thinks, the only difference is, the Dunstan is a lot more expensive...

The persimmon fruit is bitter until there is a hard frost. Then it turns sweet and deer and other animals will come to it. It also needs a second tree as a pollinator. Took several years for mine to set fruit but deer visit every night now. The deer killed the first 2 pollinators I planted. Unfortunately, they visit after the season closed.

No frost needed where I live.

    • @stevegaines-vq3bd

no, does NOT need a second tree....i had no idea i had a persimmon on my 10 acre property in Southern Ohio until one day i walked past it in early November & was shocked, to see persimmons, & it's the only one there....
& i just went to a local nursery & bought two 89.oo Keiffer pear trees & a 129.xx persimmon, & they also said it does NOT need a pollinator...

You mean bitter virginia persimmons, right? The Japanese varieties don't produce enough fruit and don't grow big enough (fast enough) from what I've seen. Also, Chinese chestnuts or the American hybrid? I found this video because I'm cleaning up virginia persimmon seeds to send in to the DNR. I would gather them and send them anywhere that they'd get planted.

My guess would be dunstan chestnut bc their blight resistant

native persimmons are no longer bitter after frost. I have a Japanese persimmon in my yard that is absolutely loaded. took just a few years to produce and been producing for over 20 years now.

The Jiro might....it's a cross b/t the American & a Japanese variety....It's pretty cold hardy....you can go to Stark brothers, check out persimmon trees, put in your zip code...it shows what works in your zone....in Southern Ohio i'm in zone 6B.....i just panted 3 Jiro persimmon trees & 2 Kieffer pears....# Chinese Chestnuts are going in in October...

can you use a fruit tree as a mock scrape

    • @DDHONLINE
      @DDHONLINE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely. That is actually a killer tactic in areas with mature apple trees, etc., because deer prefer those branches.

in some states you're not allowed to "bait" deer.....like w/ a salt block or a pile of corn...
but Ohio isn't like that....but fruit trees or a field crop is OK everywhere....
