Being a software engineer professionally and a quantum physics enthusiast, I think I will start my quantum computing journey with the first book (Quantum Computing: An Applied Approach) that you recommended.

As an ancient geek (retired software engineer, 33 years experience) I must admit to some bewilderment regarding these new fangled "quantum" computers. However, their power appeals to my never quenched megalomania at the thought of all that computational power. 20 Years ago I worked through Fermi's "Notes on Quantum Mechanics" which had mostly simple matrix operations and finished the book with more questions than answers.
I shall try the "An Applied Approach" book you have suggested with some hope that an old dog, me, may learn some new tricks. Please pass my regards to Quark.

Also good to take a look at the problems & solutions book by Steeb & Hardy. I personally enjoyed learning QM from the book by Merzbacher, but I guess the textbooks you suggested by Griffiths and Shankar are more accessible.

AS a general introduction, try Scott Aaronson's intriguingly titled book 'Quantum Computing since Democritus' - yes, the Greek guy who's credited with coming up with the idea of 'atom.' Aaronson's blog, 'Shtetl Optimized' is a good place for ideas and discussions.
Then 'Dancing With Qubits' by Robert Sutor.
It's also worth looking at reviews on amazon from people who've tried books, to give you a sense of where you are compared with the reviewer, to test if the book is for you.
