Right, I watched the first few videos here on TH-cam and thought I'd carry on and get the whole course. I'm not even halfway through yet, but just wanted to take a moment to say that I've learnt so much already. Not quite sure how you do it, but you somehow manage to pack loads into each video without going too quickly whilst also covering basic stuff without it getting slow and laborious. Some experts forget what it's like to be a beginner and that can leave them unable to teach - here with have the subject knowledge and the ability to explain all rolled into one. I don't mean to gush, but this is great stuff! Thanks.
Complete beginner, film maker, not even a musician. I was struggling, couldn't even get sound out of Cubase to begin with, your tutorial is by far the best, clearest, most straightforward online. You are the best, because you keep it simple and cover all aspects in detail. Well done. will be recommending you...
Now if only cuBase itself was clear and straightforward. Sadly, I already uninstalled. Most DAWs Are overly complicated. Doesn't have to be, but the customer isn't the primary focus of most software is it. Anything besides an OS that needs a software installer assistant is too much for me. Lol
Thank you very much. I've always wanted to do some audio recording as a bedroom guitarist. I don't understand why DAWs are so complicated but I guess it comes with the nature of music production lol. I will be following your guides! Again, thank you for this invaluable tutorial
More than that…. I LOVE you for doing this. I started on Cubase VST24 , moved thru SX up to Cubase 5x. Had to use Logic since 2008, so your lesson are invaluable now that I’ve rejoined with 12. Things have changed a lot but you are incredibly helpful. Steinberg always loved to hide fundamentals! Thanks!
I just bought the whole beginner's course. Here is why: He speaks in a normal speed and repeats himself on what he is doing. He is not assuming you know where things are and what they are for. He shows you the screen slow enough that you can follow along. I absolutely hate tutorials that fly by, and you are like What? What was that? And you have to re-wind or slow down TH-cam. So being that I have NEVER used a DAW, and failed as a drummer in my 20s, this series is helping me navigate CUBASE ARTIST 13 in a methodical step by step manner. So, if you are just starting out, or you are frustrated with nagging confusion, you may find like I did that this course could work for you too. Note, if there is a change from 12 to 13, he does spit screen to make sure there is no confusion depending on the version you are using. Lastly, I really appreciate that the course is in all zip files, and I can play the videos locally on my machine and not log into one more website. :-) Now if I can just come up with a professional name like eka "Slip Tacks" ;-) Onward and upward!
I finally got sound coming through, but I can't figure out how to apply effects like distortion, delay and things like that. But I think you're lesson might just help me to get started. Also, my project window doesn't really look like yours. I finally got it! After hours of trying to figure out how to get sound coming through. You have been a huge help in setting this up and I would have never figured it out if it hadn't been for you! Subbed! And I will highly recommend you to anybody who is beginning this journey. I can't thank you enough!
Great! It's actually really easy and we do cover it in the other lessons. Just go into the channel settings and on the left side you can add inserts/plugins there :)
@Borntoproduce awesome! Thank you! You, by far, have explained this so much better and easier to understand than anybody else, hands down. Thank you so much! I struggled for hours and hours yesterday. Still couldn't get the plug-ins to work, like the drum pack. Do you gotta have a midi device controller before the actual sound will be heard?
@@Squirrel-i6u Thanks Greg, glad it has been helpful. Not sure exactly what you mean. You should not need any external MIDI device. Are you using Groove Agent?
@Borntoproduce yes, I have the groove agent one like your using here. I thought that you had to have a midi device/controller to output the sound signal, but it's all good now. I finally got that part figured out, so now I'm on to the next part, which is getting the guitar track set. Thank you for everything!

This should be easy in Groove Agent, You need to load all the samples to different pads (selsect all the samples you want to add, then drag them to the pads (i think you want the middle option)). Is it just software that i can buy and download now as i would really like to get started tonight if anyone reads this post and wouldn't mind giving me some sound advice . Thank in advance . and have a great new year .
Hey Julian, thanks, glad we have been able to help. Yes, we would buy it direct from the Steinberg website, then you simply download their 'Steinberg Download Assistant', and you then you download and install it all from there. It's fairly straight forwards, just make sure you also download and install all of the 'additional contect' as there is a lot of very good stuff in there. As for the version, just start with the 'Elements' version, and if you find it is not enough then you can upgrade at a discounted price to the 'Artist version' which has a few more bells and whissles. If you are planning on doing much vocal work then the Artist version might be what you want, but again you can simply upgrade when the time is right and you won't be penalized for it. Hope that helps, good luck :)

Thanks for this video. It helps me a lot to learn cubase. My cubase pro 12 Version has no samples of music or any instruments music. How should I add it??
Hi, thank you for this really helpfull tutorial. But, on my Cubase, there is... : ...no "Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver" option for ASIO Driver (Only "No Driver"); ...only "No VST Instrument" option for "Instrument" when adding a new Track (No other options). Hello great video, I have 2 questions. 1:Cubase has a Competitive Crossgrade deal. I have a logic pro on my Mac but I want to switch to windows and choose for a completely new DAW, I think that Cubase is good for filmscoring etc. But what does the the competitive crossgrade entail? 2: I had read that you no longer need iLok for the cubase 12 pro. Can I still make a switch from PC to Mac later and install cubase 12 pro on my mac for free?
I don't know anything about the cross grade deal so you will have to ask Steinberg about that. Yes you can use Cubase on either Mac or PC or both as it's all done online and no longer needs the Elicenser USB dongle :)
@@Borntoproduce Thx for the fast reply. I have some paid plugins on Logic on my mac. Can I use these in Cubase on windows? If so, how do I transfer them from mac to windows?
@@erentosoundtracks7316 As long as the creator of those plugins give you a VST2 (or preferably VST3) version of the plugin you should be able to use in on a Windows PC. You will need to check, but normally that is the case
Hello again! How do you get the notes played to appear on each colored block? For example, your Cubase shows C1, D1, F#1 on each block, while the ones on my end only have the colored blocks with no notes. Is there a button to turn that feature on?
Thank you for the video, it's very helpful! I've just got Cubase 12 Pro so I have a lot of learning to do. When I get to adding the virtual drum machine, I get stuck. When I click on Kit 1, there aren't any sounds available, like Pop Kit. Any ideas? Thank you for your time!
Hi Anthony, thanks, glad you are finding it helpful. Go to the Steinberg download assistant and make sure you have all the additional content installed. This will give you all the extra packs, drums etc :)

I can record analog sources using mics but I just cannot seem to add drum loops into my recording. I tried over and over as I watched this tutorial but when I drag a sample in, I only get a half bar if that. I can't seem to figure out how to extend it.
I'm just starting out trying to learn at home recording from the very start with "Cubase 13." I will say that your video has by far given me the best info out there. I'm trying to follow along as i watch and pause the video to gain a better understanding. I'm now attempting to "Add Track" but now when I open the scroll bar to select "Grove Agent' for a drum track, I do not have the option to select anything whatsoever. The only thing that I see and can even select inside the scroll bar that shows up for me to click on says "No VTS Instrument" with no other selection at all. Could this be because I'm using the "Free Trial" of Cubase 13? I literally just bought and setup my laptop, audio interface, midi keyboard/controller, and speakers. I want to record my own music at home obviously. I wanna play guitar, bass, vocals, all myself and program the drums. Do I not have to plugins that should come built-in with the DAW (Cubase 13) because I'm using the 60 day free trial? Would there possibly be a different way that I might need to go about this since the video is for "Cubase 12" and I'm running on "Cubase 13?" I'm very lost, 🤣it took me almost 5 full hours total just to figure out how to get the sound to work through me speakers without having to keep unplugging them from my interface back and forth, when watching TH-cam and then running inside my DAW, Lol......Please help me!!!😫 Thank You in advance!!!!
Hi, very glad the videos are helping. You should still have some instruments I beleive. You need to use the Steinberg download assistant, find the version of Cubase you are using and then install all the additional (optional) content
Hi, im trying to learn how to mix music, i have the cubase 12 free trial, im struggling to find the samples as when i click on loops and samples nothing comes up. Any ideas where I can access samples within cubase? Thanks.
do you know why my cubase installation is missing all the VST instruments? 6:53 it only says "No VST Instrument", nothing else: there's no Groove Agent SE
Sir, I am Satyaban from India. I have a simple question, If I record on any track, I have to put the yellow speaker icon on to listen to the recorded audio. But when I want to play it back, I have to put that icon off, otherwise I cannot listen to the recorded audio. How to resolve it. Kindly advise. Regards.
That is correct Satyaban - it's the monitor button and it enables you to hear what you're recording over the rest of the track. Here's a useful video th-cam.com/video/3c9fyFjXiAk/w-d-xo.html
Hello! When Groove Agent SE pops up and I click Kit 1, I see no banks of sounds at all. The top just says "Load Kit..." Beneath that in a golden color reads "All Instrument Sets", but nothing loads. Is there a way to get the banks of sounds to load? Thank you 🙏
Sounds like you need to install the additional content. Use the Stienberg Download Assistant, go to the version of Cubase you bought and you should see all the 'optional content'. I recommend installing it all as there are other very good sound banks :)
It sounds like no instruments have been installed. Get Steinberg Download Assistant installed and then install all the various VSTs that you need such as Groove Agent and Halion etc
You need to open the Steinberg download assistant, go to the version of Cubase you bought and download all the additional content. Then you'll have all the content you need :)
@@Borntoproduce I already did Sir. I think it has got to do with the default location. I installed it in different drive butt I can't find the option in Cubase where I can point directory of installed content.
Hey man thanks for the video I have a question is it true that the stock plugins in Cubase 12 are not M1 compatible I'm hearing all kinds of different conflictive things I haven't called Steinberg personally but I'm waiting to get a new M1 computer to update from Cubase 11.5 to Cubase 12 Thanks
Hey Frank, we don't have any access to info that you guys don't, but judging from the threads I have seen, it 'should' work. I also don't have a MAC to test this out on. It seems some people are only upgrading Cubase, and did not upgrade to the latest versions of the other plugins like halion and GA. I would guess the best thing to do is to completely remove Cubase and all assosiated plugins/instruments, and do a fresh install of everything from the steinberg download assistant. This is just a guess from what I am reading, but it seems logical. Good luck :)
@@zenegyerekeknek Hey. Sounds like you need to install all the additional content. To do this, open/download the 'Steinberg Download Assistant', then go to 'Cubase' and select the version you own. On the right hand side you'll see all the available downloads, which includes and instruments and samples etc which you need to download. It auto installs them so it's pretty straight forwards.
You'll need to download the Steinberg download assistant, from there click on your version of Cubase and all the packs, instruments etc are there for you to download
It would help to know what the specific issue you are having is? Copying most things in Cubase can be done easily by holding alt (option on a mac) and clicking and dragging the object you want to copy.
I realize this is from like a month ago, but in case you haven't found the answer, sound card is a common term for an audio interface. It's a thing you can use to plug your instruments into your PC, to allow their audio to be cleanly recorded.
It may depend on what version of Cubase you are using, but all the buttons and controls are in the same place. Is there anything specific that is not the same for you?

Thank you 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
No problem 😊
QUESTION: In 12 it does not always find my keyboard, a Yamaha. Never had an issue with 11. How do I add that?
If it's connected via USB it should be automatic. I don't know why it's not in your case. Best thing would be to contact Steinberg Support, as we don't have the answer
I already have written my music by hand (notation) is there an option here that can help me?
mine brings up cakewalk for the drums
Thanks for this video. It helps me a lot to learn cubase. My cubase pro 12 Version has no samples of music or any instruments music. How should I add it??
You need to go to the Steinberg download assistant, fine your version aof Cubase, and download and install the additional content :)
Thanks
Hi, thank you for this really helpfull tutorial. But, on my Cubase, there is... : ...no "Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver" option for ASIO Driver (Only "No Driver"); ...only "No VST Instrument" option for "Instrument" when adding a new Track (No other options). I would really apreciate if you could help me out
Please help me out with a link of plugins of cubase 12 am
At 6:50 there are no instruments listed for me, can I download these somewhere? In the media bay there are no loops or samples either
Thank you for the reply! I'll double check to make sure I have everything downloaded. I'm going to also purchase the beginner course on the website.

My steinberg ur22 is not showing in drop down Asio menu.
Drivers are up to date, windows 11 says interface is working fine.
Update/edit. Ignored windows 11, re installed drivers from disc. Bingo-back in business
I can record analog sources using mics but I just cannot seem to add drum loops into my recording. I tried over and over as I watched this tutorial but when I drag a sample in, I only get a half bar if that. I can't seem to figure out how to extend it.
cubase wont recognize my zoom b6, however in reaper it works just fine, any advice?
@@Borntoproduce awesome! I'll try it out. thanks for the fast reply, and the great content.
Can we hear "Only Smoke Weed", please? 😎
Set up my sound card properly but don’t hear any drums, though I can hear other things. Y?
Or a page where to download cubase 12 plug-ins
Hi, im trying to learn how to mix music, i have the cubase 12 free trial, im struggling to find the samples as when i click on loops and samples nothing comes up. Any ideas where I can access samples within cubase? Thanks.
great tutorial, but I did not have groove agent, or any of the sound samples, or any of the preset drum kits, ...
Try Steinberg Download Assistant and Steinberg Library Manager - both are downloadable and helpful.
Try Steinberg Download Assistant and Steinberg Library Manager - both are downloadable and helpful.
What’s wrong if i can’t find any drums when I press ”Kit 1”?
I am not getting any sound from my drum track but I do get sound from a midi I created.
Thought it was Ian Botham I swear was expecting cricket bat to come out not a DAW
haha I've heard that before hehe
😂
I purchased the BTP Cubase bundle and i'm still having issues. Is there a way I can get in touch with customer service?
Sorry to hear you're having issues. There is a contact form on our website, or you can ask your question here, or email info at borntoproduce dot com
Please answer that)
I don't have the "groove agent SE" on instrument. what should I do? I have to install sth on my cubase?
You need to install the additional content in the steinberg downoad assistant
What version are you using; I can't follow your steps completely, and believe it is a difference in versions.
Cubase 12 Pro (but we don't use Pro features)
Ctrl+MouseWheel = Easiest way to zoom btw
Do you have to pay for the instruments? Because I’m on the trial and I don’t see anything?
You may need to download them from the Steinberg Download Manager - google it and install if not done so already
When i go in the studio set up menu i dont have the audio sistem part, i don't understand
Had this problem, and the bar was either in another screen or "behind" the application.
do you know why my cubase installation is missing all the VST instruments? 6:53 it only says "No VST Instrument", nothing else: there's no Groove Agent SE
Go to the Steinberg download assistant, go to your version of Cubase and install all optional content :)
Mine doesn't record what I'm doing any ideas
Sir, I am Satyaban from India. I have a simple question, If I record on any track, I have to put the yellow speaker icon on to listen to the recorded audio. But when I want to play it back, I have to put that icon off, otherwise I cannot listen to the recorded audio. How to resolve it. Kindly advise. Regards.
That is correct Satyaban - it's the monitor button and it enables you to hear what you're recording over the rest of the track. Here's a useful video th-cam.com/video/3c9fyFjXiAk/w-d-xo.html
I'm getting an error message stating " vstsound is not a valid audio file and cannot be loaded"
@@Borntoproduce Thank you! 🙏
Please why is my cubase showing cannot convert this type of file
I got to the create track and clicked instrument. But it only says No VST instrument. What am i doing wrong??
It sounds like no instruments have been installed. Get Steinberg Download Assistant installed and then install all the various VSTs that you need such as Groove Agent and Halion etc
@Born To Produce Okay thankyou so much! I've played guitar for 15 years but new to all this lmao
7:06 great so far but apparently you're using VSTs. My cubase doesn't have any sample and vsts in the libraries. Shouldn't we cover that please???
You need to open the Steinberg download assistant, go to the version of Cubase you bought and download all the additional content. Then you'll have all the content you need :)
Awww. My is my groove SE empty? There are no banks of sounds when I click Kit 1
Go back to the 'steinberg download assistant', find your version of cubase and install all the 'additional content' :)
@@Borntoproduce I already did Sir. I think it has got to do with the default location. I installed it in different drive butt I can't find the option in Cubase where I can point directory of installed content.
@@Borntoproduce is there any way to download specific sound files? because I don't have 30gb worth of free space on my computer
Hi! On my instrumentum drop down there is nothing listed only no vst instrumentum and external.. What do you think I should do?
Do I need Groove Agent?
I also don't have Loops and Samoles. Does the trial version not have those?
@@zenegyerekeknek Hey. Sounds like you need to install all the additional content. To do this, open/download the 'Steinberg Download Assistant', then go to 'Cubase' and select the version you own. On the right hand side you'll see all the available downloads, which includes and instruments and samples etc which you need to download. It auto installs them so it's pretty straight forwards.
Lost all my loops and instruments.................... So much problems with Cubase 12..... What can I do to get them back?
You'll need to download the Steinberg download assistant, from there click on your version of Cubase and all the packs, instruments etc are there for you to download
Hey, I'm having trouble with copying and pasting the kick drums. Any help you can provide? Great video for a complete noob like myself. Thanks
It would help to know what the specific issue you are having is? Copying most things in Cubase can be done easily by holding alt (option on a mac) and clicking and dragging the object you want to copy.
what's a sound card
I realize this is from like a month ago, but in case you haven't found the answer, sound card is a common term for an audio interface. It's a thing you can use to plug your instruments into your PC, to allow their audio to be cleanly recorded.
The app on youtube tutorial never looks like the one on your computer, done
It may depend on what version of Cubase you are using, but all the buttons and controls are in the same place. Is there anything specific that is not the same for you?
I’m lost.
I've got a long way to go to sound like Infected Mushroom.
Bro.. I tried everything I could but the sound is flickering everytime I open TH-cam to play a backing track.. or if I start guitar pro.. I think it is not taking input from multiple sources ( as in guitar and TH-cam/ Guitar Pro..
Please help - here's the video to show what the problem is

Why won’t someone do these videos for people trying to record live instruments being played by breathing humans. No drums computers no BPM. Just…. Record.
