This past year I’ve spent a total of 65 inpatient days dealing with autoimmune issues, kidney failure, and a completely unrelated but extremely frustrating broken leg. The thing about chronic illness that makes it really hard is not just the pain, it’s the loss of autonomy. You WANT to do things but your body simply CANNOT do the things other people’s bodies can. Small things make such a huge difference. I’ve been meaning to get a mini fridge for a while. One thing I absolutely cannot do without is one of those big surge protector extension cords, the ones with an extra long reach and multiple 3 prong outlets. They also have ones that have usb charging ports built in! Omg, it’s SO MUCH EASIER to keep things plugged in or unplug them if you can just stuff the power strip in a drawer next to you. No more reaching behind the couch or tripping on things trying to stretch cords across the floor. I keep one in my emergency suitcase at all times along with extra chargers and stuff like that. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes.
As I have spent most of my day crying because I absolutely cannot find one thing to be happy for. 3 weeks ago I had a total knee replacement, it is so hard being alone and feeling put aside has been the hardest part because I have 4 kids and I guess I just thought they would be more helpful. Guess the jokes on me for having these thoughts. I cannot say how helpful you have been, so positive and you have been such an inspiration to my beginning of a long recovery which will last 3 to 4 months. I am an inner spiritual person and have tried to find positive things to do and journal but I have been so depressed I can't even bring myself to do anything positive. I hate this and I just want my life back. Thank you for your help you have no idea how you have helped me. ❤❤😊 I wish someone knew about the kindnotes for me I think that concept is so cool. Heck I haven't even gotten a flower picked from a field or an offer for dinner. I don't mean to be so sad but I don't think people realize how hard the recovery process can be, the survey is the easy part. Xoxo thanks again
I'm sorry to hear you're going through this and having a hard time 😞 Can you talk to your kids about needing their support? It can be hard to think that your parent needs you, so hopefully they just need a little push to come around and help a bit more ❤️ I'm sending hugs and healing thoughts your way! 😊
I had a total knee replacement 5 years ago and it was the best thing ever! It did take about 6 months to get comfortable but after that it has been amazing!! Don't be discouraged, it will be worth it. The pain stops. I am havibg a total hip replacement tomorrow and I am looking forward to being pain free in that joint for the first time in over 30 years. As for your kids, they need to step up and help! I wish you the best lovely xx
Hey Jo I would suggest scooting up/down the stairs instead of hopping, that way you lessen the risk of falling and hurting your leg. I know after my amputation I pretty much spent my entire time on the floor scooting to places around my house and actually got to places pretty quick!😂 Also yea amputees(especially those with the loss of a lower limb) are very prone to skin problems especially with using a prosthesis. I remember I lost quite a bit of weight and ended up developing an ulcer on my stump because I didn't tell anyone that my prosthesis wasn't fitting right.
@@everythingthatrhymeswithsa3116 haha yea it was much easier for me than to just hop around. The only downside was that I would constantly get rips in my pants! 😂
@@chengreenman8840 You can always cut them to shorts or find that one perfect shirt that makes you look like you fell out of a "Seventeen" mag 😍😊 I would suggest big/long/over grown sweater yassss! 👖💃 Happy Belated Friday!
I'm bedridden most of the day; have a neurological degenerative condition. My experience is; if I have too much pain to read, (or am too hazy), I certainly can't follow an auditory storyline... going back in a book to reread a paragraph is easier than going back in an audio book... I read children's books when I'm not well enough, or re-read a book I loved. And yes, it's not very encouraging for your self-image to read children's books, but it takes the attention away from the pain. (But that's only my experience). Love from the EU. ❤️💞
I randomly came across your channel a few months ago. Seeing your notifications pop up is one of things I look forward to. I love your honesty and authentic ways you talk about human struggles and the importance of seeking support and taking care of yourself. Ps, I too love my blankets and snuggles with my pup. ❤️
How awesome about KindNotes. This is a great idea. When I had my first shoulder surgery we were moving into a new place. The bedrooms were upstairs. I pulled a beach chair we had and just fell into it lol. I came home after surgery to moving lol. I slept in the chair while others moved us in. Once our couch was moved in I relocated. I still use my electric heater too, almost like the one you have. Arthritis is a pain. I have arthritis from surgery.
hi!! loved the video! I think most people wouldn't really think about gifting someone a heating/cool pad, but its actually genius! it has purpose, doesn't go bad (like flowers) and its definitely given with a lot of thought in the person who receives it..!!
Great ideas Jo!! The ice pack is sooo much better than putting ice in a bag. One surgery, the hospital used zip lock bags, and I thought wow, that's pretty bad. Lol
I had emergency surgery over the summer (ruptured appendix) and was off work for 1 month. I’m a bookish person, but like you was so ZONKED (Thankyou nauseating medications!!). One of my favourite gifts was A) a bottle of Ribena cordial my brother brought to the hospital because Leeds tap water sucks B) my friend knew I was struggling with reading so got me an amazon voucher for e-books, movies etc. I actually bought a fire stick with it so I could watch Netflix in my bed at home. Lots of love x x
Jo, Put a mini-microwave on top of that mini-frig and you can warm up coffee, socks full of rice, or even a frozen burrito. Glad to hear the doc does not think the swelling is a concern but sad to hear you need to be out of socket for a while. Shrinker time maybe?
For coffee addictions when you’re stuck in one place? Try an electric kettle and a French press. The added bonus is you can also use the electric kettle for stuff like tea or noodles. Another nice gift you can give to someone who you know is going to be laid up long term is a bed lounger. Couches aren’t great support when you lay on them and beds aren’t great support when you sit on them. Bed loungers go a long way toward solving the second problem (neck and back support, what a concept).
My best friend and I had surgery around the same time, me for my knee, her for her ankle. Both of us had very different surgeries and recovery time, but both of us spent a large amount of time in pain on the couch, and it would have been amazing to have something like this then.
I am so thankful for your videos. I have two more months of physical therapy before I have a pretty scary surgery. You really help me feel less anxious.
love your t-shirt + The audio books are a really good gift indeed. I found myself feeling too weak to keep my eyes open and look at things. So being somewhere in between awake and asleep with your mind is being occupied, is really nice! I used to recomend people to make a music compilation, but these days people have internet in the hospital maybe ;-) or at home. Another thing, if they really want to put time and effort in it: a personal "tape" with music and personal stories and well wishes, man, that brings a smile on your face while laying there ;-) And once at home, if it is a person living on their own, I would say healthy ànd comfort food is so welcome as well. A scented candle. I guess all things that stimulate the sences you still have, maybe? Thanks you for this video, very usefull.
There are no Problems, only Challenges yes those are awesome ideas!! I love that - candles were really important to me, I’m a very sensory driven person and so having my area be clean and smell nice means a lot to me. Having nice candles was so nice and my mom got them for me. I love your idea of a personal tape with stories and music, etc! 👍🏻
Hello Jo! Hope you have a great weekend. I'm sorry about your sore leg. I hope it works out on its own. Even if it doesn't, you have been through a whole lot that has made you incredibly strong and you will get through this too. Even when you are alone on the couch recovering and feel like you can't do anything here's two facts to think about. 1, you ARE doing something awesome even sitting on the couch. You are really encouraging and helping others here. And 2, you are being thought about every day. Dixie and I wish you all the best and send you hugs and purrs. P.S. she has gone into heat so things just got interesting here, lol. P.S.S. did you name your cow?
Austin, your comments continue to be some of the most thoughtful and encouraging I receive! Truly - thank you! 😊 You’re so right and I’ll remember that...I’ve spent all day on the couch pretty much because my leg got bad combined with feeling under the weather, and your words about remembering I’m still “doing something” help. And goodness, I bet things are interesting there with miss Dixie! I did name my cow picture I totally spaced telling everyone!! Moo-lissa...like Melissa, but a cow, get it!? Lol. 😂 Someone suggested it and I loved it, I felt like it fit her.
Hey Jo, those are some really great ideas. I don't know which is my favorite they are all so helpful. As a chronic pain patient, I can say all of them are so useful. I have a couple of more things to add to your list. A subscription to Netflix or Hulu. While a lot of people already have one not everyone does and when you are recovering from surgery or a major pain flair being able to binge watch something without distraction of ads etc can be very helpful. Another suggestion would be to bring a meal over or offering to help with grocery shopping or meal prep can be very. Even if you have a spouse or partner that can deal with this while you are unable it can still be helpful, caregivers need down time as well and they are often ignored or forgotten. Thanks for sharing your ideas and video. Soon your leg will heal and you will be making forward progress again!
I have chronic neck pain and migraines and I need another ice pack or two to rotate. I have one that is blue gel that doesn't freeze solid/hard and I need more like it! I will check the link you have for the kind you like, thanks! I'm learning Feldinkrais method to help my neck, maybe something for you to look into as well.
Jennifer P I have one of the ice packs you’re talking about - I switched it up for these this year because it just didn’t get cold enough and wouldn’t hold the cold if that makes sense? And thank you so much, I’ve never heard of that method! I will 100% look into that! 👍🏻
@@FootlessJo colder and cold longer is exactly what I need! I was reading a blog post by a woman with migraines in Australia and she mentioned a physio type treatment. I looked that up and it doesn't appear anyone in the US uses it and I can't afford to go to Australia, ha! So it reminded me of functional integration and Feldenkrais methods. I happen to have a book on Feldenkrais and just started reading it yesterday. It's about awareness of your body, how you move, how it feels, so even if it doesn't help your neck it might just help in general. The man who developed it studied Judo into his 80s!
I've got the same brand heating pad in the XXL model. It's a great thing! Have never been able to get into audio books, I can't seem to sit and do nothing but listen. Hi Jo, have you ever seen the "iWalk" knee crutches, I wonder if you might be able to use one until you're able to use your prosthetic leg again. I have seen videos of below the knee amputees using them for getting up at night or just around the house when they don't want to put on their prosthetic. It might be worth looking into. Hope your leg feels better soon!

Wendy oh gosh I hope it went well!! Good luck recovering from your surgery!! I super recommend these packs - the Velcro makes it so easy and they hold the cold - so even if I only have two if I do the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, by the time I rotate back, it’s cold again. 😊 All the best as you continue your recovery!
Nichole Rose right? I really love them! I’ve gotta make some kind of art project with them now that I’ve gotten through them all and hang them up somewhere or something!

I just found your channel and I love it. I'm not an amputee.. but I do suffer from chronic pain. And I hate it so much.. and I never thought having chronic pain would lead to having bad mental health.. never thought my thoughts would lead me to want to end my life. Thank you for being awesome.
Dec 27th I had knee surgery. It was bad at first I expected that . But to still be hurting so bad and therphy hurting so much it almost makes me sick has been bad . I'm still on pain meds but they aren't working much anymore. My whole right leg hurts , throbs and just hurts. My left leg is hurting/sore for taking up what might right leg cant . Its miserable to not be able to get up and do whatever. And I'm not one that asks people to help .
Those kind notes are adorable! I have some friends who struggle with depression and anxiety, as well as myself, these would be a great gift for them. I am having surgery in 4 days and these are great suggestions, going to look into those ice packs! Thanks!
The kind notes look amazing. I would give it to my mom, who is a caregiver for my grandmother and was for my grandfather until Dec 8th when he passed away.
Audio books are such a great idea, I wish I had something like that in hospital, the TV drove me NUTS !! and as you said, books were challenging. and those cards were cute too, my daughter talked about making something similar.. writing good things that happen on post it notes and putting it in a jar, when you feel down.. open the jar and read a good memory. im a new LBKA so i feel your pain with having to stay off your leg when things flare up. Hope it gets better soon

Jo!! This is such a helpful video first of all. Second of all, I love your tattoos. And I want tattoos. But I’m worried I won’t like them for the rest of my life. Did you feel this way?/is this normal for first timers? Or is this a sign that I shouldn’t get tattoos?😂
Emily_Catherine I’m so glad you found it helpful, and thank you girl I’m so glad you like my tattoos!! And good question, here’s how I look at it - I have a lot of tattoos (most you can’t see, they’re on my back, shoulders or ribs) and I’m not “in love” with all of them. BUT. I’ve never actually regretted a single one because each represents so strongly a part of my life - a feeling a felt, a period in my life, something I believed strongly. I almost feel like it’s a history I get to carry with me...that might sound lame, but it’s how I see it. 😉 so I’m grateful for all of them, but I never get one unless for me it has real meaning if that makes sense!
Footless Jo that does make sense! Thank you for replying😊and that does help me in my tattoo journey. I have a few ideas, one for my badass grandma, one for Carrie Fisher(princess leia), and one of my favorite flowers. That helped me a lot thank you😊

I super recommend these packs - the Velcro makes it so easy and they hold the cold - so even if I only have two if I do the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, by the time I rotate back, it’s cold again. 😊 All the best as you continue your recovery!
My mum recently became a below the knee amputee, your videos are really helping her❤️
Oh gosh thank you so much for telling me! I'm so glad - all the best to her in her recovery!!!
I found you of off Love What Matters and I love your personality!!
Those little notes are too cute! What a wonderful creation and such a nice way to lift someone’s spirits up!
Nichole Rose right? I really love them! I’ve gotta make some kind of art project with them now that I’ve gotten through them all and hang them up somewhere or something!
Good suggestions. I can see the small refrigerator being especially useful.
Martin Mosman it has probably been the single most useful thing!
On top of your mini fridge... Is that a dog intercepting a kiss between you and Brian?? 😂
@@FootlessJo That's adorably hilarious. Can't wait till they all come home.
Cordecepts before radiation exposure . B vitamins stress formula post surgery.
These videos are the only thing keeping me alive tonight.
I know my mum would enjoy lots of these!
"Mini-fridge"? Haha that's the size of our only fridge in our tiny German apartment xD
Ahhh the kind notes are so cute I need those to get through exams...

You're so tough. Love the kind notes idea. Such an awesome company
Great ideas!!! Take care and enjoy your weekend!
Judy Hilliard thanks so much Judy!!

Those kind notes are adorable! I have some friends who struggle with depression and anxiety, as well as myself, these would be a great gift for them. I am having surgery in 4 days and these are great suggestions, going to look into those ice packs! Thanks!

Hey Jo! Hope you are well today!
The kind notes look amazing. I would give it to my mom, who is a caregiver for my grandmother and was for my grandfather until Dec 8th when he passed away.
I've checked out your channel and I think that you're one strong cookie! I subbed and I cannot wait to see more videos! May God bless you! :)
GREAT IDEAS.
Oh, that's a bummer about the delay. I guess the Universe wants to remind you again that patience is a virtue (I know you've had a lot of practice with that...). Just breathe, and imagine the best possible outcome. On another note, watching Sadie chomp her ball is so satisfying 😊💕
Kind Notes
I WANT TO GIVE A JAR!!!
Starseed Warrior 22 got you entered!!! 😊

your progres might have stopped now for a bit due to thee swollen leg, and that is really frustrating. but you are not going backwards and thats a good thing. i hope it gets well soon :)
That helped me a lot thank you😊
You're sooo strong
Jo ,I actually thought Sadie had swolled her ball!
Great giveaway
Hope everything is on the right way now! That that thing in your leg is on its way to disappear. I was wondering too if your dogs have reacted on your new self?
