Excellent walk! It's a shame that you you were there in May, when everything was closed, and the sky was dark. This village is actually called Cadouin - and for administration purposes it was combined with Le Buisson, which is 5 minutes down the road. As you said, it is on the old pilgrimage route to Compostella in Spain, so the monks established a monastery here, with it's Abbey church, to cash in on all the pilgrims who used to pass through. The place that was closed was the entrance to the cloisters, a covered internal square where the monks could walk under cover. In there you can also see what for decades was claimed to be part of Christ's shroud - just what the pilgrim's wanted! But one of the monks proved that it was a fake . . . . the facade of the Abbey is in Italianate style, not French, so unusual here, as you correctly observed. Thank you, Michael x
