  • Near-infrared photoimmunotherapy uses an antibody-photoabsorber conjugate that binds to cancer cells. When near-infrared light is applied, the cells swell and then burst, causing the cancer cell to die. Photoimmunotherapy is in clinical trials in patients with inoperable tumors.

    This is so far the ONLY conventional cancer treatment that I would ever consider. All I know is, it cures back pain very well.

      Thank you for your comment. While this is exciting news, this approach is not conventional or available as standard therapy. It’s presently being studied in an early phase clinical trial. NCI researchers are hopeful that the trial will provide more definitive information on the promise of this new treatment approach.

    Can you please be more specific on what you would call a inoperable tumor? If the operation is of highly invasive surgery and is the only was to get to the tumor wouldn't that be inoperable? What kind of tumors could this treatment be used for? What is the prognosis of patients who have been treated with photo imunal therepy? Where in the US is it currently being used? What was the year that it started being used?

    • @NCIgov
      @NCIgov  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Aaron, NCI’s resources refer to an inoperable tumor as a tumor that cannot be treated with surgery. In asking about the uses of photoimmunotherapy, there are currently four clinical trials in the US using this treatment approach. All trials are focused on either head and neck cancers or squamous cell skin cancers. You can view these trials here: clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=photoimmunotherapy&cntry=US&Search=Apply&recrs=a&age_v=&gndr=&type=&rslt=. You can learn more about the development of photoimmunotherapy in a blog post from 2016 at www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2016/photoimmunotherapy-cancer. Additional information about the recent approval of photoimmunotherapy in Japan can be view at ccr.cancer.gov/news/article/japan-approves-photoimmunotherapy-for-head-and-neck-cancer. Take care.

      Hello, in 2020 a device and drug combination based on photoimmunotherapy development that was led by Dr. Kobayashi was granted approval by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan for the treatment of unresectable locally advanced or locally recurrent head and neck cancer. Approval of this same type of photoimmunotherapy by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will depend on the results of a larger phase 3 trial. You can read more about this at ccr.cancer.gov/news/article/japan-approves-photoimmunotherapy-for-head-and-neck-cancer. You may also wish to explore PubMed®, a free search tool of the National Library of Medicine, to search for journal articles with updates on photoimmunotherapy at pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ . This therapy has primarily been studied in patients with head and neck cancers (for example, those inside the mouth, throat, and voice box). Although there are ongoing clinical trials looking at other types of cancer there are currently none listed for melanoma in the NCI’s database of clinical trials at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/clinical-trials/search. Hello, We are sorry to learn of your father’s diagnosis. Dr. Kobayashi conducts laboratory and animal research but does not treat human patients. However, there is one clinical trial (research study involving humans) in the U.S. using photoimmunotherapy for recurrent (previously treated) head and neck cancer, which you can read about here: clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02422979?recrs=ab&cond=photoimmunotherapy&cntry=US&rank=1. Additional information on clinical trial participation is available in this link: www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/clinical-trials. We encourage you to discuss this information with your father’s doctor regarding how it relates to his specific situation. Take care.

    • @NCIgov
      @NCIgov  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are sorry to learn of your mother’s diagnosis. We encourage you to discuss your questions and concerns with her doctor. This video discusses photoimmunotherapy, which is a novel type of cancer immunotherapy that uses infrared light to activate rapid and selective killing of cancer cells. When the light is applied, the cells swell and then burst, causing the cancer cells to die. This is a new type of treatment still being studied in clinical trials, primarily for head and neck cancers. One limitation is that although near-infrared light does penetrate tissue, it cannot penetrate deeply, and would not be appropriate for all cancer types. You can read more at www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2016/photoimmunotherapy-cancer. Take care.

    Are the intracellular contents dangerous once released into the body?

    • @NCIgov
      @NCIgov  วันที่ผ่านมา

      The goal of photoimmunotherapy is to kill cancer cells and a patient’s body is able to break down and remove dead cells without causing harm to the body. Photoimmunotherapy is still under study and researchers will continue to learn more about any possible side effects caused by this treatment approach. Take care.

  • @T-aka-T
    @T-aka-T หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is it not an issue that cancer cells spill their necrotic content into the bloodstream? When surgeons operate to remove a tumor they always want a margin of healthy tissue and say stuff like "we think we got it all". Isnt bursting a cell just a form of metastasis?

    • @NCIgov
      @NCIgov  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is understandable to be concerned about necrotic cells entering the bloodstream. When the damaged cells die, they are broken down and removed by the body. When a cell is damaged by the process of near-infrared photoimmunotherapy, it dies and loses the ability to spread and grow in other parts of the body. You can learn more about this treatment approach at www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2016/photoimmunotherapy-cancer. To your second question, the chance that surgery will cause cancer to spread to other parts of the body is extremely low. Following standard procedures, surgeons use special methods and take many steps to prevent cancer cells from spreading during biopsies or surgery to remove tumors. For example, if they must remove tissue from more than one area of the body, they use different surgical tools for each area. Information about how cancer spreads can be found here: www.cancer.gov/types/metastatic-cancer. Take care.
