Great episode! I never knew Athearn made such a switcher. The motor seems like the same one as in the first run Hustlers. I respect your ability to take something apart that you just put together. That's a valuable trouble-shooting skill in general... and not giving up.
Thank you S.D. I knew it was an easy fix as soon as I could find out where it's broken at. Teaching troubleshooting technics is helpful to the masses as well :-)
What I've found really helps me with aligning linkage pins for the operating rods is using a wooden toothpick to line everything up, then putting the screw/bolt in
Great job once again Ron!! It’s great to see the Little Monster up and running again. Patience is a virtue!! Your Classic Model today is the beautiful Audrey Hepburn!
O pequeno sujeito realmente me pegou por um longo tempo. Eu estava com tanta pressa que deixei passar muitas coisas. As lições aprendidas com dificuldade são as mais lembradas. Sem atalhos! :-)
That's Audrey Hepburn...I got two now... Nicely done as usual... Maybe you could try a grain of rice bulb...I believe they are smaller still... Rich...
I believe the tape you removed at the beginning of the disassembly was Kapton Tape. It's an insulating tape with good adhesion and longevity in warmer installations. You'll find it in many electronic applications and model trains. I use it frequently when reassembling locomotives to hold parts and wire in place. Always look forward to your vids.
I have it;s predecessor which does not run from Austria. So I will be watching and maybe think about how to deal with the frame and motor shorting out in the future.
Thanks for the midweek "extra!" Seems as if the saying "don't sweat the small stuff" does NOT apply in the miniature train repair world. Great video, a true testament to the proposition that "details determine destiny!"
I got one of these for Christmas around 2 or so years ago, my mom got it but I believe it was $20, gonna try and give it a DCC Decoder & make it run like new especially on modern tracks :)
Nice job on the switcher. Some of this old stuff was done as inexpensively as possible with plastic that gave plastic a bad name. Some of the other parts were just enough when they were new and to have something that was still salvageable after 60 or more years is pretty amazing. You've given me the inspiration to clean out the junk in my basement and get my train set put up again. The hand shakey thing isn't too bad yet so I'm all ready to go. Audrey Hepburn was one classy lady. Watch Breakfast at Tiffany's and sing along to Moon River.
Little Monster, indeed. Aptly named it would seem. Enjoy the way you keep at it though and think logically through an issue trying to find and correct root cause. The slow down for example. Also interesting to see the way various manufacturers have different takes on how to engineer things. Those dual sideframes for the drive wheels...crazy. Easier designs for that to be sure, but different strokes for different folks. Keep up the good work!
Another great video. Always fun to watch. Looking forward to seeing the interview. You are going to be famous! Just remember us 33% when you get big. LOL
Great job, I have one myself how ever the axles are broken so the drive wheels come apart, so am looking for a parts one, as my body is perfect, but drive train shot.
Holly. Switcher,, Quick ..Crank up Ron & his 'Classic Model Trains" There were NO injuries During this video.. Engineer jumped as the Switcher bucked crossing that turn-out 😂
@ 2:45 that yellow tape is Kapton tape, used mainly on circuit boards. has thermal and electrical insulating properties. May have been used to insulate that one yellow wire you had issue with by the previous owner
I'll look through my "Old Stuff I'll Never Use" drawers cause I probably have a few grain-o-wheat bulbs and the smaller grain-o-rice bulbs that I removed from locos and replaced with LEDs (If I didn't toss them). I know I have some new ones as well. I'll send them to you. Might come in handy for ya.
Gracias por eso. Veo que TH-cam acaba de revelar que están haciendo doblajes en otros idiomas. Me alegra que ahora puedas disfrutar de mis videos con mucha más facilidad.
Great video. I have a monster as well with a cracked gear. I've repaired cracked gears with thick CA and baking soda. Question. What make and model is your re magnetizer? Thanks.
The tape looks like Kapton - used to insulate in my decoder installs. It's thin and a very good insulator. Maybe the owner used some to hold the weight down? That unit doesn't need insulating. It's DC. :) Oh that's what the Kapton is for, insulating from the weight.
Good job on that little switcher. First time seeing a 0-4-2. Hey Ron I was thinking when you were getting the short on that weight. Why not paint inside or put some shrink wrap on the wire?
How did you know Ron? I knew the face, but I couldn't remember her name. I said to myself Google the movie she was in and I couldn't remember that either! 😮 Now I can Googler n find out the movie I couldn't think of! 😃 Breakfast at Tiffany's is the movie I was trying to think of! 😬
Audrey Hepburn. Photo looks like the one used on the Breakfast at Tiffany's record album. I cannot tell from the video if there is enough room but would the grains of wheat bulb fit if installing from the front of the locomotive, installing the wire leads first?
The paint on roof and sides may have been water based and came off when wet. Those side number and letters may have been applied using a rubber stamp. I seen an article where a guy uses rubber stamps to put decal letters and number on his locos and cars
That model is Idi Amin. While most know her from humanitarian work with homeless children in South America, fewer know that she was a state champion pole vaulter in high school, or that she ghost-wrote Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway, which pioneered "stream of consciousness" as a narrative device.
Audrey Hepburn - her diminutive stature was largely a result of severe malnutrition she experienced during WWII, particularly the Dutch famine, where she nearly died. It led to a lifetime of chronic health issues and she died very young (63). Tasting History did a video on a tulip bulb recipe used during the famine recently.
Anything that frustrating aught to say Bachmann on it! Lol Made it all the way to the end despite TH-cam inserting an insane number of commercial breaks! BTW - the yellow tape is supposed to be that way, it's Kapton tape, used for insulation. You'll find it very frequently in DCC self-installations.
Positive and negative LOL! Took me awhile to figure out what your were laying down. I suppose a Feller could use dawn in the U.C. as long as it dont start foaming up real bad. will still fade or remove paint though.

That seemed like a tough one. Once again you knocked it out of the park. Thanks for all that you do for the hobby.
It was a challenge, but a fun one! Thanks for the compliment.
The tape that was removed was Kapton Tape. It's used in electronics to retain things and is an insulator too
Thanks for the info
