These salaries need to be cut roughly in half to reflect the reality of your earning potential right out of college with an undergrad. That might be more finance but in my personal experience econ programs are more well rounded. Think about doing a minor in finance? I'm no expert though and every college program is different. Good luck with your studies!
This is very much Finance and not so much Econ as in Finance you solely learn about these areas, of course other areas too, but generally Finance is more specialized and will equip you with more skill in these areas. A minor in Econ with a Finance degree is my recommendation, unless you wish to be on the side of analysis.
@@azrap1054 It depends but half of wall street since the 80s are econ majors, the rest are finance majors. When it comes understanding stocks, you're better off as an econ major. Econ is more well rounded but finance is more specialized
It’s also very common to see stock brokers etc with degrees in law, management and even medicine. It’s less major defined and more about your ability to learn.
Hey Calvin! I'm hesitating between finance and economics for my bachelors and I am not very good at math, any advice on what I should choose? Also I've heard that economics courses are very math heavy, is it true? Thanks!
Great question! Every finance and economics program is a little different so I can't make a definite statement about which includes less math but I can tell you from my experience. From my experience economics generally has to take much more advanced math classes. I had to take calculus 1 and 2. Many people are pretty surprised how high Econ majors have to go in math. I actually really enjoy mathematics which lead me to economics. Now with that being said finance will include math as well but it will most likely be more business math courses. They don’t have a finance degree at my school so I don’t positively know exactly what courses a finance major takes. But it is important to know that with both you will have to take math because each are rooted in numbers. If you want to find out exactly what you would have to take for each you can look at the requirements at different schools for each major. Online most schools provide the major requirements that students have to take. Then you can see how much math each major requires and see which classes seem more interesting to you. If you have any questions, please let me know!
I want to say thanks for showing this video. You really showed how an economics degree can be worth it for some people and I feel like I can do it. I have taken principles of macroeconomic and microeconomics before since I had to take it for any Busienss major. Originally I wanted to be an accounting major but after taking the two accounting classes it didn’t seem to fit me right not because it was hard but i guess it’s how the stuff I have learned I feel like isn’t what I had in mind. But after taking two economic classes at my community college the past two years I seem to have enjoyed the topics. Sure they did invole math but i think if anyone is capable of doing at least applied math (specifically algebra, statistics and a pinch of calculus I) an economics major might be a good fit for me. I think with these jobs a degree in economics is worth the investment. I just have to be aware of how many jobs are out there for anyone who wants to work in those areas. I am thinking of working in a business setting, specifically the private sector. I have one more question though. If I want to major in economics should I review my old notes from my past economic classes? I still have them today because you never know when you might need them.
Yea I would look at jobs you would like to have in the future and see what degrees they recommend. Most jobs will say "Accounting or Economics or Finance degree required" or something like that. This way you can make sure you are going after the right major for that specific job. Yea certainly reviewing old notes can't hurt. There are also great econ videos on TH-cam. If you really want to prepare I would look at the classes you will have to take and find the hardest one and look at the syllabus for that class and maybe see if you can get the textbook early. This is how I prepare for tough classes. I am already preparing for my hardest classes next year. Good luck!
One advice , in accounting you need a little concentration and especially hard working till you get bored but trust me it woks while you repeat the same tasks of accounting . Trust me it’s not difficult Good luck .
The only problem with these jobs is that none of them are actually entry level. I have been trying to get a job using my economics degree since 2009. I even went back to school and got an applied economics master's degree and still I'm having issues finding meaningful work using my education.
I am sorry about the issues you are having finding work. I am wishing you all the best. I know a great job will turn up at some point. Finding a job within the Econ field is very competitive. I would maybe suggest getting in contact with your school’s career center and see if they can help you out. I am wishing you all the best!
Very true! It's funny I was speaking to one of my professors the other day and she was recommending I look into going to grad school for it opens up new opportunities within academia (mainly professorship positions). Great job especially for people who love economics!

Is language learning important for a finance major? Like an added asset in a resume? I can speak English, French, Arabic and Chinese. I'd like to pick another russian, will it be useful or do u recommend another one?
Knowing more than one language is certainly an asset in any work place and it can help you resume. As far as which I recommend or if you should pick up another it really depends on the job itself but speaking four languages as you pointed to is already way more than anyone else. Best of luck to you!
Great video I was most interested in the career of an financial manager. How was your experience as an economics major? I am majoring in economics myself with an minor in finance.
Need a bit of advice, so I’m going for economics BA however I was not eligible for a finance major due to my GPA being lower than the requirement, however finance interests me so much, just investing, making money, analyzing stocks and so on. What would you suggest I do? Should I continue with my economics major and do like research of finance on the side or?
What if you are studying economics at a non-target school, what's your strategy on landing a summer internship/graduate job. I aspire to be an financial analyst
The key is just to be applying to a bunch of internships. I would look all over online for internships and apply to as many as you can. Best of luck to you!

Great video! I am an undergraduate student at the United States Military Academy. I'm wondering if there are any military applications tied to an economic major. Have you found any information regarding this? Thank you for your knowledge and good luck with your studies!
Hey Bianca! Great question! In all honesty I am not too familiar with the economist jobs within the military, however, I am sure they are out there. Economics majors usually go into financial fields, and every field, every employer, has a financial aspect to it. That is what makes econ so cool, you can go into any field. And the military certainly has a financial component to it, a complicated one at that. I am sure there are jobs within the military concerning economics. I just did a little research and I found economics jobs pertaining to the U.S Air Force, here is the link I found: www.airforce.com/careers/detail/financial-management-officer And I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. If I find anymore links or helpful articles concerning the military and economics I will let you know. As far as the best thing to do now, I would talk to your career center and see what they recommend for economics students pursuing econ in the military. I am wishing you al the best. Thank you for commenting! Good luck with your studies as well!
Look into becoming a comptroller. That field is mostly accounting and financial management, but economics is definitely a good background for people becoming military comptrollers. The graduate school Defense Comptrollership Program at Syracuse University provides the MBA education for military Comptrollers.
Thank you for the reminder! Yes, you are right these are not entry level salaries. My goal with these videos is to try and find the average base salary (prior to benefits and all that) at about the five year mark. Thank you for commenting.
Sir there are many majors which are similar to economist like econometrics, economics&maths, economics&accounts, etc which major is the the best according to you

Hey im thinking about working for a ecommerce business just. Becuz i like economy and computers but i dont have enough info on ecommerce or what do they exactly do
I would recommend just looking up ecommerce business online you can learn about how exactly they are run. You could also look into starting your own ecommerce company. Wishing you all the best!
Hi Calvin, thank you for your video. I m writing you from Germany. Do you know or have some indication about who are the Employer I should target to find a job as "Economic Policy Analyst"?
Economics demands a strong basis in fairly advanced mathematics. If your school has no math requirements for economics, their training syllabus is probably worthless. At a minimum an economics major needs Linear Algebra, 2 or 3 semesters of calculus, and probably analytical geometry. Other advanced mathematics and statistics courses will probably be required.
I'm going to try and enter the finance sector but man is it nearly impossible with all the experience necessary. I'm currently applying left and right for entry level bank jobs like a bank teller and hoping to go from there but even those jobs are tricky to land unless you know people that know people. Doing some reading on the side about financial success and investments while taking some free business courses. Same with learning to be proficient in excel and other software applications that are commonly used. It's a freaking trial and I had given up a couple years ago but I can't hide for ever nor put my college education to waste as it didn't come cheap.
I found myself at public finances but I'm confused, what jobs do you recommend looking for in this field of economics? Btw I'm currently in the 2nd year of the university and I'm already planning the future...
Great question! In my mind there is no definitive “better” one, It ultimately comes down to what you enjoy more. If you are more into mathematics and analysis and number crunching then economics is for you. If you are more into finance as subject within itself into financial analysis and the financial field in general then banking may be for you. There is a lot of overlap between the two. There are many jobs out there that you can get with either a finance degree or Econ degree. I would also start thinking about what job you want in the future and see what degree they recommend. Another thing you can do is look at the courses you would be taking with each major and see which material you like the most. That is a great way to see which would be best for you. Best of luck to you!
Greetings! I'm an economics graduate and I find it very difficult to land a position in the field. Everything requires experience or turn a blind eye to people who are entry. Do you have any tips to get my foot in the door
Finding a job within the Econ field is tough these days. As far as what I am doing to get my foot in the door and get that experience is I am looking for internships. The tough thing is most internships are unpaid. However, Econ internships is how I am trying to get my foot in the door. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I’m a junior in high school and one of the majors offered at a college I’m looking at is Business Economics. Is anyone familiar with this type? Any differences? Anything I should be aware of? I’m new to this type of stuff so anything will help. Thanks 🙏🏻
Hey Jeremiah! Awesome question! And yes a lot of colleges offer an economics major and a business econ major. There are differences between the two. Generally all econ majors no matter the college or university are the same. From my research business econ classes vary depending on the college you are looking at. The reason for this is because often times business econ works closely with the business school and every business school has different classes you have to take. But let me get to specific differences. I go to UCLA and here they have both econ and business econ. At UCLA business econ is essentially an economics major with an accounting minor. I am not a business econ student, I am just economics. Although there are a few other slight differences the main one is that business econ students have to take accounting. Here at UCLA business econ is quite a bit harder than normal econ (in my opinion). Although these are these differences at my university, that doesn't mean they are the same for you. If you want to see the difference between the two for your specific college I would recommend looking up the classes each major has to take online (usually you can find this on the schools website or a basic google search). Once you find that you can find the differences between them. Best of luck to you! If you have any other questions let me know. I hope you have an awesome rest of your day!
Hey! Mate really helpful video.. was just curious as do u got any advice for a business undergraduate who’s majoring in economics and finance as to what he/she should do to boost their skills and employability coz really worried bout the future
I just graduated majoring in economics in May. I am looking for jobs and this was pretty helpful thanks. Does continuing school and earning MBA help a lot in these fields or should I work towards getting some work experience first?
It's funny I am actually contemplating this exact same ting whether or not to go straight to an MBA after undergrad or work a little bit. I don't think there is one perfect answer. You will want to take into consideration how much an MBA will cost you also. I will most likely work for a few years then get my MBA. But this is still an ongoing debate I am having haha.
I am working before going for an MBA. But I will recommend you to do the opposite. It's hard to take your time out of your schedule to study when you are working.
In India you don't really get into journalism after an Economics degree. So, I have to take a Masters in Journalism Or Mass Communication (gateway pass). Also, Financial Management job involves more of Finance and less of Economics. I wasn't taught Accounting and much of Finance. So I don't know how you get that job with a BS in Economics.
Great question! Both have very similar job opportunities so I wouldn't make a choice based purely off of job prospects. Although they have similar job prospects they do differ in what they prepare you for. A BA in econ (I am assuming you mean BA when you said "ab") is more focused on getting you in the workforce while a BS is much more focused on the science of econ and prepares you more for further econ studying such as getting a masters or PH.d I would recommend making the choice by looking at the different classes you would take with each and seeing which interests you more. Thank you for commenting!
Can I get job in USA or UK or any other foreign countries after completing BA economics...plz reply sir... Iam little late to see this video... Iam an Indian student and I would like to go Abroad for jobs..
Great question! I don't think there is any perfect way to prepare. I would definitely recommend reviewing some basic algebra and calculus in preparation for the math courses. Other than that if you want to jump into econ material I would recommend checking out Jakob Clifford's channel he makes great econ videos that you will likely use in your study of economics. And I also recommend reading business news which will help you to understand economics at work in the world we live in.
I am 15 rn and I am thinking to become a financial manager. Can anyone suggest me what courses should I take in high school inorder take economics in University??
Hey Parth! This link may be helpful for you, it goes into how to become a financial manager: study.com/articles/How_to_Become_a_Financial_Manager_Education_and_Career_Roadmap.html
LSE has one of the best econ programs in the world! Personally I don't know too much about applying to LSE since the way in which the application process works is different from schools here in the US. I would recommend looking online to see if there are any blog posts or forums discussing one's journey from high school to LSE. Best of luck to you :)
I was interested in doing that. I live in Boston, and their are definitely tons of high paying Econ jobs therefore I might work a couple years then pursue an MBA
A year or two of work experience before starting an MBA is an excellent idea. That provides an actual business background, rather than just academic theory which is important in business school.
Yes, most if not all these jobs can done with an acocunting major. And vice-versa, I am an economics major however right now I have an accounting internship.
Great question! And ultimately it is a personal decision that comes down to what you like. I would look up some videos about finance, some videos about economics and some videos about accounting to just get a general idea of what each entail. I would also look up online the syllabus for each of those majors and look through the classes that each has to take. Then you can decide which of the classes interest you the most and that can help you make a decision. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!
Super helpful vedio first of all thanks Sir. And i was so confused between IT major and economics. Even though I like Economics more because I am fine with graphs and other stuff. But I don't like mathematical that much. So i was thinking of doing a B.A economics instead of B.S. This makes sense? Waiting for your kind reply.
@@fatimag3731 Great question! It is hard to give an exact answer to that question because what constitutes a BA verse a BS at one university is drastically different from another. I would recommend you look up the courses needed for a BA verse a BS at the school you are thinking of attending and see how they line uyp with your personal interests. That will give you a more accurate answer to your question. Thank you for your question!

Absolutely! I would think that most of them could work for both accounting and finance. I think statistics can also be thrown into that group. You will want to look specifically at each job to see what they require, each one has different degree recommendations.
One thing that is tricky with an Econ degree is that there are so many options! It isn't a major like nursing where everyone get's basically the same job. With Econ it can be tough to find the right job for you. The best recommendation I have is maybe reaching out to the career center at the school where you got your Econ degree and I am sure they can push you in the right direction. Best of luck to you and thank you for watching!
With a PhD in Economics you are probably already over qualified for most hotel management jobs. For typical hotel management jobs, unless you intend to work at the corporate level for a large hotel chain, a BS in hospitality management is probably sufficient.

Calvin Raab Personal Finance Videos do I take calculus for the undergrad degree in economics? I have taken Business Calculus before but never Cal I. But I suppose you could say I would take more advanced maths at the undergrad level.
I am not sure about the grad level exactly what is required for mathematics. For my school (UCLA) in order to declare for an economics major I had to go up through Calculus I and Calculus II however, there are other schools that don't make you go that high in math. That is for undergrad so I imagine masters you would have to have some calculus. Business Calculus is very similar to calc 1, the main difference I believe is that calc I goes into much more depth on the trig side of calculus (you use trig a bunch in calc II). You will also have to take statistics as well.
Calvin Raab Personal Finance Videos that’s true, for me I had to take Business Calculus, is which I would assume it’s about the same as Cal 1 but not much geometric trig involved. I passed with an A though. So that means I can handle Economics then?
Absolutely! Usually biz Econ students learn everything Econ students do plus generally a bit of accounting. You can definitely get any job an Econ student can.
If you want a serious economics job a master’s degree in economics is almost mandatory. There are other jobs which you can qualify for with just a BS in Economics, however.
Yes you are very right. A lot of econ majors have to take data analysis courses. I usually consider an analytics degree to be much close to a math degree. But you are right that data analyst and econ do very similar and often times the same things.
I think any language is helpful no matter the major. I used to be a double major in business and french but I have since dropped french because it didn't fit with my academic schedule. A language can always help, the great thing about a language major is that when added to something like an econ degree it really breaks up your classes and allows you take fun and interesting classes that you wouldn't have taken otherwise.
hey bro I don't mean to be rude but why not make a video for entry level positions instead? These are all mid to senior level positions. Also these salaries are about years after college. You shouldn't be making misleading information. Just giving advice but I believe that you are trying to do good. Wish you the best
Good question! My econ videos also work for finance majors (many similarities between the two) but I hope to create some finance major specific videos in the future!
Econ would certainly work well for that, business would also be a good one. I would also recommend seeing if you could take any entrepreneurship or small business courses. Best of luck to you!
Great question. I was in the same boat when trying to pick a major. I also really like math. It is for this reason that I was drawn to economics, lots of economics in math. I know lots of econ majors that are also math minors. Finance and accounting both involve math although I would say that in general an econ major will do more math in their course work than either of the others. But all will incorporate at least some math.

One advice , in accounting you need a little concentration and especially hard working till you get bored but trust me it woks while you repeat the same tasks of accounting .
Trust me it’s not difficult

The only problem with these jobs is that none of them are actually entry level. I have been trying to get a job using my economics degree since 2009. I even went back to school and got an applied economics master's degree and still I'm having issues finding meaningful work using my education.
I am sorry about the issues you are having finding work. I am wishing you all the best. I know a great job will turn up at some point. Finding a job within the Econ field is very competitive. I would maybe suggest getting in contact with your school’s career center and see if they can help you out. I am wishing you all the best!

Watching this video on my second year study.
Great video I was most interested in the career of an financial manager. How was your experience as an economics major? I am majoring in economics myself with an minor in finance.
As a history major I love studying how economics shapes many degrees of society behavior.
Great video,,,hoping to be a financial manager
I have a question for you, Is econ good for remote based jobs ? Such as something like data science.
Most econ course options include a lot of finance related courses. For example, I am currently an econ major but I am taking a class on banking.
What if you are studying economics at a non-target school, what's your strategy on landing a summer internship/graduate job. I aspire to be an financial analyst

If anyone needs help spending money it’s probably the military
Look into becoming a comptroller. That field is mostly accounting and financial management, but economics is definitely a good background for people becoming military comptrollers. The graduate school Defense Comptrollership Program at Syracuse University provides the MBA education for military Comptrollers.
FYI these salaries are NOT what you'll be making right out of college. Maybe 5-10 years after college, particularly a financial manager position.

In my school there is no mathematics along with economics in 12 is that a problem !?
Very true! Keep working hard and I KNOW an opportunity will pop up soon. Best of luck to you!
I found myself at public finances but I'm confused, what jobs do you recommend looking for in this field of economics? Btw I'm currently in the 2nd year of the university and I'm already planning the future...

Banking and finance or Economics
Biggest recommendation I have is to get an internship and get some experience under your belt. Best of luck to you!
But having an MBA does give you a standout quality over your competition.
I am working before going for an MBA. But I will recommend you to do the opposite. It's hard to take your time out of your schedule to study when you are working.
I will get my PHD as an economist maybe ..
Best of luck to you!
In India you don't really get into journalism after an Economics degree. So, I have to take a Masters in Journalism Or Mass Communication (gateway pass). Also, Financial Management job involves more of Finance and less of Economics. I wasn't taught Accounting and much of Finance. So I don't know how you get that job with a BS in Economics.
hii is there a vast difference in terms of job opportunities between ab economics and bs economics?
Great question! Both have very similar job opportunities so I wouldn't make a choice based purely off of job prospects. Although they have similar job prospects they do differ in what they prepare you for. A BA in econ (I am assuming you mean BA when you said "ab") is more focused on getting you in the workforce while a BS is much more focused on the science of econ and prepares you more for further econ studying such as getting a masters or PH.d I would recommend making the choice by looking at the different classes you would take with each and seeing which interests you more. Thank you for commenting!

hi mate. Have you got any tips for prior preparation to an economics major?

Other than that if you want to jump into econ material I would recommend checking out Jakob Clifford's channel he makes great econ videos that you will likely use in your study of economics. And I also recommend reading business news which will help you to understand economics at work in the world we live in.

I was interested in doing that. I live in Boston, and their are definitely tons of high paying Econ jobs therefore I might work a couple years then pursue an MBA
Karim Zakaria that’s awesome, are they the jobs from the video or actual economist jobs?
A year or two of work experience before starting an MBA is an excellent idea. That provides an actual business background, rather than just academic theory which is important in business school.

I mean as (( financial things ) or for economics major 🤔
Yes, most if not all these jobs can done with an acocunting major. And vice-versa, I am an economics major however right now I have an accounting internship.

Great question! And ultimately it is a personal decision that comes down to what you like. I would look up some videos about finance, some videos about economics and some videos about accounting to just get a general idea of what each entail. I would also look up online the syllabus for each of those majors and look through the classes that each has to take. Then you can decide which of the classes interest you the most and that can help you make a decision. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

Would some of these careers be open to accounting and finance majors ?
Absolutely! I would think that most of them could work for both accounting and finance. I think statistics can also be thrown into that group. You will want to look specifically at each job to see what they require, each one has different degree recommendations.
I graduated as an Econ major but idk what to do :/
One thing that is tricky with an Econ degree is that there are so many options! It isn't a major like nursing where everyone get's basically the same job. With Econ it can be tough to find the right job for you. The best recommendation I have is maybe reaching out to the career center at the school where you got your Econ degree and I am sure they can push you in the right direction.

Calvin Raab Personal Finance Videos sorrry I meant the masters level.

Yes you are very right. A lot of econ majors have to take data analysis courses. I usually consider an analytics degree to be much close to a math degree. But you are right that data analyst and econ do very similar and often times the same things.
Does a language (any) helps an economics graduate?
I think any language is helpful no matter the major. I used to be a double major in business and french but I have since dropped french because it didn't fit with my academic schedule. A language can always help, the great thing about a language major is that when added to something like an econ degree it really breaks up your classes and allows you take fun and interesting classes that you wouldn't have taken otherwise.
