- Me and Matt BleepinJeep have been friends for a while and have always wanted to do a fun build off. Well thanks to Pull-A-Part and Tekton Tools we are finally making that happen. Introducing the 2020 Pull-A-Part Cheap Jeep Challenge - Busted Knuckle vs Bleepin Build Off presented by Tekton Tools. Me and Matt have a $5k budget to build the best Cherokee we can. Team Bleepin Jeep starts with a stock Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and Team Busted Knuckle starts with a stock Jeep Cherokee XJ. First we purchase the Jeeps from Pull A Part used cars and have a $500 safety budget to install a roll cage, racing seat, and harnesses. Then we go head to head with the Jeeps stock to see what kind of improvements need to be made. Each round of competition we will be earning gift cards and prizes to give to you our loyal subscribers. So Buckle up and get ready for a fun ride!

I'm not saying this is faked...but...a 150k mile cherokee 4x4 with all body panels matching and no damage would sell for like $5-6k over here in Georgia...and pull-a-part in Bama just happened to have one for $2k sitting there waiting for you...that's such a lucky coincidence
I found quite a few in decent condition, this one had some issues. Non Working AC, bad oil pressure sending unit, no headliner, etc...
That was a lucky find for 2k. If that were sold on line in some places it would have brought at least 5k. 150,000 miles on one of those is low now a days.

Awesome. I miss xj’s. I bought one years ago for 350.00. Had wrist pins clacking away. We wheeled it for 3 years. Couldn’t kill it. Exo caged it, spooled front and rear on 35’s. Was a blast. Guy who sold it to me bought it back for 2500.00. Lol best investment I ever made.

Sick burn: you’ll need those manual windows for when your engine shuts off after you roll it on its roof and you need to crawl out.
Sick burn 2: Those tires are balder than Terry Crews. Ok maybe that one was lame. But I came up with all that on the fly.

I love this series, been watching both channels but it breaks my heart cause to see those 2 babies getting trashed. I can't find any in that great a shape around here for any where near those prices!
We are giving them new life just the way they were meant to excel off road.
A clean good running XJ for 2k or less?? Color me jealous. Nothing anywhere close to that in MI.
I found a few but that were high mileage, this one was mint!

Hmmm, one guys uses a professional shop (and professional welder) and the other guy uses a home garage. I am thinking there maybe an advantage in there somewhere.

Our plan was to do the build in Byron's little 2 car shop (knucklehead garage) but he sold his house so the build happened last minute after hours at our professional shop. I used the equipment but I am far from a fabricator or professional. So basically a novice using professional equipment it was laughable at best but we got it done. Every piece of my cage was slugged just about and having Wesley weld it up for me was just a safety precaution since it was a roll cage and all.

You are so right! You want to hear exciting news jeep FCA is working on a straight 6 motor to replace the punniestar lol V6 it will produce 300HP to a rip snorting beast 525HP for performance vehicles in their lineup and they are rumored to be dumping the Hemi 5.7 6.4 as even the 6.4 only puts out 498HP which is alot but when you have less cubic inches putting out 27 more ponies their is no reason to keep the larger heavier more taxed overseas motors going. OMG🤯 that's amazing HP! I haven't heard about FT LBS yet but an IL six always puts out ridiculous TQ so I'm not worried about that. You can look up articles on it the engine will probably be named the Tornado if sources are right. They already filed patents 2years ago. Thought you would enjoy that news🙂

However you can verify that 300HP will be standard or very close is it that hard to believe one the punniestarV6 is already smacking out 285 HP and 260 FT LBS TQ and that's out of a V configuration we all know IL6 puts way more torque out inherently then any V6 setups you don't think they can add 15 more HP to that lol? Don't believe me though go look it up it's easy to see for yourself🙃✌
I'm preparing an operation cheep jeep 04 WJ build. Found it on a Facebook sell page for $600. After a sending unit, oil change, and brake job, I have $800 into this daily driver so far.

Errrrrrr... Who can confuse an ZJ and a WJ?... ZJ= Boxy, WJ=rounder, Less than 10 parts in common. I'm a WJ owner. My opinion of Ian Johnson just took a hit for that reason.
As far as who's going to win, I'm guessing Bleepin'Jeep, due to knowledge, although If Jeep knowledge were equal, I'd say the XJ.

Have built both 97' XJ and 97' ZJ. With $5K budget I would destroy BJ. No contest. Then I would continue to drive the XJ daily for the next 10 years.

@@BustedKnuckleVideo Well there are tons of parts out there. My first lift on my XJ actually came from parts off a 88' MJ at the Pull-A-Part in Lithonia, Georgia. Springs, lower control arms and shocks. So to keep my cost down FB MP here I come. A decent set of wheels and tires can be had as well. Heck, near me there was just a set of Jeep MOAB 16" rims with nearly new tires for $600. The only part that I had to search for and found from someone at work was a adjustable track bar. And I only gave $50 for it and it was almost brand new. Good luck to BJ finding ZJ parts that easy. Now the ZJ is a cushy ride I know but you have the platform to build and WIN with.

The XJ is gonna be cheaper and easier to build capability wise. But I think the ZJ is gonna be nicer on the driver.

94-96 is as good as the motors get and mines a 95 with factory high pinion Dana 30 and had zero problems out of the Dana 35 with 33s on steel deadlocks and locked and ran it that way for over 2 years 97-99 is definitely not any better than 94 and 95s
I'll take the 8-1/4 over the Dana 35 for how I drive

I'm not completely biased. I am a huge fan of the XJ but the ZJ is also a favorite of mine. Currently building up a WJ just for something different.
Maybe we can both build WJs next and wheel them!

I'd love to find a XJ like that. I'd turn it into an overland vehicle. Here in northeast Ohio, they're either rusted to death or expensive.
they are amazing budget builds
The Chrysler 8.25 came in pretty much every XJ since the beginning unless it has ABS. So technically you didnt need a 97-99 XJ even though they are the best years in my opinion. The 2000 and 01 have issues with the head cracking and the really early XJs had a Renix setup which a lot of people dont like (I think that stopped in 91 or 92). Just a bit of XJ knowlege for you
I wanted the 97-99 for the 8-1/4 and HP30. Plus the newer dash looks better
No they all did not I've owned 8 XJ know them like pretty much like Matt and I've personally had 90 95 96 all had no ABS and had the little turd 35 my 97 90 and three different 98's all had 8.25 not sure why the 90 had one but it had no signs of any swaps as did the others. Just in my experience but they all could have been swapped but I doubt people did any swaps befoee I got them.✌
97 and up had the more desirable 29 spline 8.25 96 and below had the 27spline
ive had a 96 cherokee currently have a 5 spd 95 grand cherokee honestly xj's are trash shit boxes get a zj much better ride and its called a grand cherokee so obviously its better.

@@BustedKnuckleVideo personal preference xjs ride like garbage my ax15 zj will stomp a xj all day long. The only real issues zjs have are the boat anchor 42re. Unless ya get a 93 with the aw4 or like mine with a factory ax15. But mines far from stock lol

91-97 came with the 8.25 option my 91 had one, you have got to do a little grinding/shaving to the bottom of it so it doesnt turn into an anchor on the trail.
