This video describes what is expected of Air Assault Students during the 10 Layout that is conducted on Day 1 of the Air Assault Course conducted at the Sabalauski Air Assault School in Fort Campbell, KY.
When I went through AAS back in the 80s there was one time for an inspection I forgotten a pair of gloves. Sergeant told me to grab a rock or something a similar weight to replace the weight of the gloves. So I grab this really big rock put it in my rutck and did the road march. At the end of it the same Sergeant came up and told me that was very good but I meant some of these little pebbles not that big huge Rock. Lesson learned.
As of 12 August 2019, the 10 Layout as demonstrated in this video is obsolete. Instructors will now require students to dump everything on the packing list onto their ponchos (except rucksacks and IOTVs) and to hold the items up when called for.
My guess is the original point of the exercise was to ensure that all the necessary gear for the course was present and in good working order. Hence the "all buttons buttoned" and "all buckles secured" part. It seems to have evolved into a "can this guy follow directions and pay attention to detail" as well. Since all MOSes can feed into air assault a lot of these guys might be desk jockeys or even Guard or Reserve so a lot of this is to establish a base line that you need to be at to complete the course.
Being detailed oriented Is both something that is learned and necessary in a lot of things. Most of our military is support functions and not in direct fighting. I was surprised air assault is run by basic training NCOs.

I remember in Hawaii, a soldier had failed the layout cause his pen was busted in pieces after his ruck was tossed off the five ton. Tropic Lightning! 🇺🇸
Back in the day, if someone from our company was going through, and we were the air support for the sling load portion of the course, they would be initiated with a cooler full of ice water as soon as they got the clevis on the hook.

I failed AASLT because of a fucking Swiss seat, which was embarrassing considering that school was in no way difficult. Second time was a charm though, lol. My platoon sergeant thought I was fucking with him when I told him I had failed the Swiss seat. I wore a Swiss seat at all times when in the battalion footprint until I went back a few weeks later. I still remember the look on the cadre's face when I came back in line and he saw my seat was too loose (it was too tight the first time). I've never seen anyone express "fuck man, really?" without saying a word so well.
It's actually not hard. Put the small shit into the ziolovk bag, then place the uniform and wet weather top on one side of the poncho and fold it into a taco. Put the taco in the main compartment and put the small shit into the big front pocket.
On the layout paper from the website it says field jacket or gortex/gen 3 jacket and extreme cold weather wet weather jacket. So do I bring my soft shell and my marshmemlo jacket?
I noticed the PT cap in the example video was the foliage green/grey (ACU) color. Now that the previous grey/black IPFU has past the wear-out date and we are now all wearing the all black PTs, should Soldiers bring a black PT hat instead of the foliage green/grey color? Will both colors be accepted or is there a single standard color?
