I love this movie because of how realistic it is in terms of story. Seeing the 3 mess around with their powers is something young adults would definitely do and Andrew's descent is also pretty realistic given his environment. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I'm mad we haven't gotten a sequel.
The director had a really intriguing interview where he explained what gave them the powers. He said that the thing was from a species of a crystal like creatures that have been alive for billions of years, being born when the Earth’s surface was still hot and settling, and have lived at the Earth’s core. They moved around through electromagnetics and when ever they get hungry, they create burrows at the bottom of the ocean and lured in fish through electromagnetic frequencies to feed on them. Supposedly, the one that gave them powers created a burrow on land, which he said was a rare, but not uncommon thing that they do. It was then trying to turn them into “drones” with electromagnetic powers to get them to bring it more food. It was supposed to absorb them, but it was a really old one and was apparently killed by another one of its kind, which resulted in them getting their powers. I just gotta say, I absolutely loved his energy and imagination on the story and it’s a shame he didn’t get to make the sequels to this. Whatever he makes in the future, I wish him the best of luck on it.
This is an all-time favorite of mine, and a very well written villain origin story for sure. Josh Trank really showed how talented of a filmmaker he was with this film, and it seems like he's never truly been given another chance to show his talents.
The only thing that taints this movie a little is that the story was primarily written by Max Landis and he turned out to be a sexual harraser. So even though I love the movie it's something that's always in the back of my mind.

The cousin doesn't get enough flak for HIS part in Andrew's downfall, he rarely sticks up for him, abandons him to hang out with out others and provides the least amount of support for Andrew, Steve did more for Andrew than Matt did.
I'm having trouble seeing it like that. Before they got the powers, Matt was explicitly trying to include Andrew, trying to get him to go to the party. Andrew said Matt left him alone and treated him like sh*t. Andrew's story is tragic and he's angry, but I don't think that's fair at all. Andrew was constantly throwing up roadblocks and pushing Matt away. It's sad because it comes from his baggage, but that doesn't make it Matt's fault.

I watched this movie on cinema. I loved it but as I grew older (When this movie came out i was 13 and now i am 25) i began to understand that is a very sad movie. Watching Andrew as being lonely but kind to a monster it's so damn depressing, and that last word says it all: depression. Last night I read the Martyr script, that is the sequel that Max Landis wrote but never released and the ending it's just Matt doing what he could't never do with Andrew. Show him that he understands. It's so heartbreaking but beautiful
Always loved the scene after the sudden ✈️ Steve/Michael B Jordan lifting Andrew up and swinging him in the air, elated that he saved his life. By the end there a sharp downturn, and we know how it ends. Felt like a final moment of joy for both of them
Between the spider scene and the amount of vileness pumped into the father character, that was actually the outcome I had anticipated as it seemed to be setting up for that.
I read that Max Landis and the screenwriter forgot his name originally wanted andrew to dissect his father like he did the spider but the studio said it was too dark
Idk if anyone else caught this, but Andrew calling himself the apex predator only then to be killed by a statue of a man with a spear. Pretty neat writing
19:30 And that was the turning point for James. Him killing that spider was a visual representation of him starting to become a colder and more twisted person. And of course he did it on camera which means we got to see it. His powers are just the tool used to express the turmoil and evil building inside him. Next he’ll probably kill one of his only friends “on accident”. It was a dark day for fans of him and his content.

Super well handled Probably unpopular opinion here, but I don't think I would ever want a sequel or prequel. I have closure on this story and it should be left at that
Ooh, insta-clicked on this soon as I read that title. This movie is such a gem. My best buddy/roommate is obsessed with it, and I wouldn't have watched it years ago if not for him. This really is how a bunch of teen friends would react to gaining powers, and how a troubled individual with messed up circumstances can take all the wrong lessons from gaining them...
Hell yeah, I love this movie. I remember when the trailer first came out. It absolutely knocked my socks off. I still go back and watch it occasionally.
This movie has 1 of the best portrayals of superpowers I've seen in a long time. But if I had to choose a power, it would probably be teleportation like in the movie "Jumper".
I have a difficult relationship with this movie. I was a huge fan of it in my late teens, and later on a fan of Max Landis, the writer for it. I liked him for how candid he was about the scriptwriting process, especially because that's what I want to pursue. But when all the women started coming forward about him, I felt like a fool. For a minute, I considered giving up on my writing pursuits. So yeah, long story short, got a lot of thoughts/feelings when I see this movie now.
I know what you mean. It's impossible to fully compartmentalize your admiration for a work of art and the artist. Obviously, nowhere is that more difficult than with someone like Michael Jackson. People literally say he CAN'T be a monster because look at the universal joy he brought to everyone. He just CAN'T. But perhaps instead of having to "pick sides" of some sort, we all can just admit that both things about a person can be true. I was a big fan of Louis CK's work; too bad he's also a creep, so I don't really feel like seeing any of his new work. Annie Hall and Manhattan were amazing, and its creator was an even bigger creep. I will recommend Chronicle to my friends who only know superheroes from Marvel movies, but I'll also tell them the writer was an abusive creep.
The personal level of this movie got me, got me good at the time, cuz I was more or less in the same situation of the protagonist Andrew Very emotionally truncated teenager, my mom was also sick for a very long time and I wasn’t there in the fateful night-dawn of her passing. Dad wasn’t an active abuser like in the film, but a passive one. Also wanted mind related powers. All the personal ingredients to become an antisocial danger, yet I didn’t, because of friends and family who kept me sane at that same stage of my life Very close to home parallel alternate universe (spooky) kind of stuff
I'm really glad that you're finally reacting to this hidden gem. I hope someday you'll watch/react to "Searching (2018)". I could only say that movie has a unique camera perspective.
When you're talking about conflict, you have your four basic types: Conflict with the self, Conflict with others, Conflict with the environment and Conflict with the supernatural. They could have gone with one, or two, but they went with three conflicts; conflict with others and the supernatural, and his conflict with himself. Maybe even all four here, was there a conflict with the environment, too? In any case, conflict with himself was the main character's biggest conflict. And when you're talking about a movie about people with superpowers, they could easily just have made it another one of those running away from a government or powerful group who wants to study and dissect them, or recruit them. But they didn't, they didn't even go close to that. and that's why this movie is so good. The take away is, if you don't conquer your own demons, then it doesn't matter if you have superpowers, because you'll just end up defeating yourself. His cousin really had no choice in the matter, he didn't leave him another choice, it was kill him or watch him kill everyone around him like he was killing an insect. I leave the spiders alone, or put them outside. Unless they're big and hairy and they lunge at me.
@@JamesVSCinema He had been an up and coming writer working on a lot of different films but it came out that he actually had a history of abusing and mistreating women mainly his former girlfriend among others. Turns out he was a real piece of shit.
This movie came out when I was in high school and my friends and I really loved it. I think because we were roughly the same age as the depicted characters we could picture ourselves in the situation having telekinetic super powers.
This movie was supposed to start its own universe. I believe the next movie was supposed to be called Martyr and focused on and evil Iron Man type character who makes his own suits or something. Sucks it never happened but I think the director got into trouble.

Somehow Andrew didn’t get Uncle Ben’s “With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility” talk
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVEEEEEER!!!
Damn man you're on a role with the hits!
Yessir!
Chronicle was so good when I was little it is the story that makes this film! Such a great character drama!
This is my favorite movie ever , perfection and incredible ending
The personal level of this movie got me, got me good at the time, cuz I was more or less in the same situation of the protagonist Andrew
Very emotionally truncated teenager, my mom was also sick for a very long time and I wasn’t there in the fateful night-dawn of her passing. Dad wasn’t an active abuser like in the film, but a passive one. Also wanted mind related powers. All the personal ingredients to become an antisocial danger, yet I didn’t, because of friends and family who kept me sane at that same stage of my life
Very close to home parallel alternate universe (spooky) kind of stuff
OH MY GOD YEEEEEESS!! This is one of my favourite movies of all time it's such a fun watch!
Prolly one of the most underrated movies ever tbh
I really wish they could make a sequel.
I'm really glad that you're finally reacting to this hidden gem.
I hope someday you'll watch/react to "Searching (2018)".
I could only say that movie has a unique camera perspective.
This movie was meant to be a really hard R rated movie so I wonder how that would have turned out 🤔
A lot more people being turned to mush hahaha
Answer: The Boyz
seen this movie like 20 times with my brother the past few months. i got him hooked to the movie
19:24 the movie got into your mind so well that it made you go crazy on that spider too
ive been waiting for so long for someone to react to this, you are the shit
This movie is so underrated
This was a pretty cool film.. low budget... and michael B jordan was the level of actor he is now
Most def one of my favorite movies. Probably one of the best "superhero" movies
loved this movie when it came out! also RIP that spider
LMFAOOO RIP
Indeed rest in peace poor thing
RIP
thankfully it was written by Max Landis but he wasn't allowed on set, so the production was not tainted by his presence.
Hahaha I don’t even know what that even means 😭
@@JamesVSCinema He had been an up and coming writer working on a lot of different films but it came out that he actually had a history of abusing and mistreating women mainly his former girlfriend among others. Turns out he was a real piece of shit.
One of my absolute favorites. So underrated.
This movie came out when I was in high school and my friends and I really loved it. I think because we were roughly the same age as the depicted characters we could picture ourselves in the situation having telekinetic super powers.
This movie is one of the greatest movies I've seen since it was released.
Awwww jeeah. This flick always gave me Akira vibes lol
Oh yeah, that's what I always thought too. Andrew and Tetsuo...
Once the camera started floating in my head I was like oh no the dissociation has occurred
I forgot how amazing this movie was.
Phenomenal movie! I never get tired of rewatching it.
We can see how Andrew became a supervillain but how did Max Landis?
This movie was supposed to start its own universe. I believe the next movie was supposed to be called Martyr and focused on and evil Iron Man type character who makes his own suits or something. Sucks it never happened but I think the director got into trouble.
17:21 the saddest death in the movie along with Andrews mother.
they need to bring this back as a series tbh. Gave me Akira vibes towards the end
This movie always reminded me of Akira.
