The first story really touched me and it was great to hear a person care so much for someone who was a neighbor instead of a family member we expect. I hope the guy is still doing fine over the loss of his friend.

I wish I could meet the writer of the first story, as well as "Dave". Those guys are two beautiful human beings. Those are the types of people I wish I had as friends.
Also, the writer is so correct in pointing out the importance of mental health. It is every bit as important as physical health, and no one should be ashamed to need to seek help for it. I literally just spoke to my doctor about that very thing this morning.

The most horrific thing for me was the poor man who died of cancer at home unable to afford healthcare in the first story. Having seen my mum receive palliative care for lung cancer in an NHS hospital In the UK it saddens me to know people have to suffer pain.
As usual your storytelling is second to none.

The USA has Medicaid which is free healthcare for all people living below the poverty line. Otherwise healthcare is mandatory to be given to employees who work in a business with over 10 people. It’s a myth that people can’t get healthcare in the US. Sure there might be anecdotal cases but you can say that about anywhere.

  • @ccedfagabc

The AIDS story. At our college, we got to interview a panel of people, one was an EMT During the AIDS scare. She said there were so many medical staff who were afraid to touch a person who they thought had AIDs, afraid to be in the same room, afraid to administer care (because they didn’t know how it was spread). I can’t imagine how scary that era must of been for all involved.

Re the HIV/AIDS story: if you want to learn more about how the US government deliberately ignored the HIV/AIDS health crisis check out the book and film titled "And The Band Played On." It's a heavy story but it's one that people need to learn.

I addvto that my own suggestion: For anyone who needs more of a narrative softball intro to the topic watch the movie or go see the play Rent. It's about new York Young LGBTQ and artists trying to survive and includes the story of a central character involved in the AIDS crisis back then. Really brings it to life what might otherwise be hard to relate to or even imagine.

That story about AIDS hit hard. I remember doing my internship at SF General Hospital & not being able to enter the hospital room of an AIDS patient at all. It was completely prohibited unless you were a doctor or nurse wearing PPE. I can still remember asking why the door was sealed off with HAZMAT markings all over it. I felt horrible once I found out what the end of that terrible disease looked like from a medical standpoint.

Theres a night light in the bathroom at the end of the hall and this shadow blocked it. I thought one of my nephews had woken up n the shadow was jus distorted but it vanished once i turned on the kitchen light which partially illuminates the hallway and when i checked everyone else was out cold and all doors and windows locked. Been spooky stuff going on and my mom and i have been discussing options. 👍

I had to watch my dad slowly wither away from the disease he had because he didn't want to go into the hospital or home. He wanted to stay at his house where he felt safe. So he had people go over a few times a week every week to check on him or bring him groceries. He dealt with this disease since birth and it took 58 years before he took his last breath. I lived with him for about 13 years and I watched his health slowly decline, so I kinda understand what Dave felt in the first story.
