crazy how east asia went to war and japan stayed out thanks to their heavy war during WW2! The Chinese Civil War, The Korean War, and most notably, the Vietnam War, all four east asian countries, all went to war and were all happening within the same 20 year period
A great overview of 1946! There were certainly a few events that were left out (cough Philippine independence cough), but you guys did a great job of illustrating how the first "year of peace" had a lot of hope, optimism, relief, and uncertainty. I think this should be a recurring segment for subsequent years, especially the one that have been "overlooked."
Wow!! I also love this format, general and contextualized overview!! It would be so great if you could do year-by-year overviews - it would serve as a great tool to make us able to understand the inter-context of the world events. Keep up great work :) !
yup! And to be fair, the song was based on a fake commencement speech by columnist Mary Schmich in the Chicago Tribune in 1997. But thank you for getting the reference :)
It's interesting you forgot to mention Philippine Independence from the USA in July 4, 1946 after the Philippine Commonwealth ended after 10 years. The USA also pumped $800,000,000 into the Philippine economy via the Bell Trade Act. It became the richest country in the Asian side of the Pacific until the early 70s.
I see the guys cheer the shortage of fabric for the arrival of the bikini...but, have you seen the lavish dresses created by Dior as a response to the ravages of war...but I don't thibk it was in the 1946 year that you're covering in this episode. Love your TV set, of course...blue argyle socks?
Juan peron’s refusal to take sides in the Cold War didn’t go well with the United States who retaliated by attempting to undermine Argentina’s economy and make several attempts to overthrow him
covo...as a truthful dictator, though, he had no problems accepting the Nazis and giving them refuge with no policy of extradition with those countries that wanted to indict those monsters! He was a real gem in the rough!
I found the proposal to revise the year 1946 very interesting, in fact a year that obscured when compared to the other years of the 1940s, thank you for that ,however to a single detail that I would give my disapproval for, why did they leave the standard when creating the video icon?
Could you talk about the occupation of Korea after ww2? Like before North Korea/South Korea became a country but after Japan surrendered Korea? So from 1945-1948? For both countries. That would be very interesting.
Could you correct the name of the Argentinian president, please? It's Perón with only an "r" and an accent in the "ó". By the way, I was pretty shocked when you talk about him. I mean, I was listening about Stalin, Churchill, The US, Japan and the trials and his surrender too and then suddenly...wait what? lol. I usually don't hear many people talking about Cold War from the perspective of South America so that's why I enjoyed so much your video.

On topic about Churchill, you could mention quote from 1946 published in 1966 where he advocated to nuke Moscow ...with that in mind, one can more easily understand Soviet lack of trust and reinforcing Churchill iron curtain. The pro- Churchill sources are trying to downplay significance of his lobbying, but lucky, we are living in internet age and it is easier than ever to understand the delusional, possibly sociopathic nature of Mr. Churchill.
yes, he was tried in absentia as it was not clear if he was still alive at the time. Although Borman had killed himself before the unconditional surrender, his remains were not recovered and positively identified until 1972. As such, he was tried at Nuremberg and given a death sentence in the event that he was found alive.
We should have been more precise...the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg was largely undamaged and it was one of the few buildings still still standing that was large enough to house the proceedings.
1946 was the beginning of the reign of the most popular Filipino mobster of Tondo, Manila, Asiong Salonga. He is the "Al Capone" of the Philippines because he did the same things as Al Capone except selling alcohol drinks. the Prohibition wasn't implemented in the Philippines during the American Occupation.
Xerox and other copymachines were forbiden to own in USSR, they got wide spread use after fall of USSR, people used to copy forbidden books by hand. So it was policy against free publishers, it was hard for them to print leaflets and books opposing parties policy.
1946. The year US granted "independence" to the Philippines. Looking back now, it was seem to be a mistake. America should have granted Statehood to the Philippines just like Alaska and Hawaii.
