Steve Winter it’s called “slapping” and it’s only allowed in softball...it’s a different form of hitting for faster players to give them a head start down the line and it’s not stupid and you must be very skilled to do so👌🏽
Takes a lot of skill besides the speed they have. To see the ball and make contact while not in a normal batting stance and running toward the ball is difficult. Your head is naturally moving so more difficult than it looks. Plus many slap hitters can hit home runs and deep outfield hits so it makes them unpredictable to play against as a pitcher and fielder.
It may take skill but it’s a complete waste of energy. You’re taking power away from the hit to get a single stride further. Why would you do that. You could simply put more power into your hit (not “slapping”) the ball will go further and you’ll have more time. If you want a good example the 3rd in Alabama batting line up did it well. (Number 16) She followed it through and didn’t just go for a wimpy hit.
It’s called a strategy to get on base, so that you can use your speed to your advantage. Much why ppl bunt to get on base, bc they can out run the throw. They’re using their talents to their full ability, when not everyone is a great power hitter
